An undercover video of a teacher berating a student at a New York charter school has many wondering if the treatment of students at the school goes too far. The school says the video doesn't tell the whole story. Demarco Morgan has more.

@@theaterkid8499No it doesn’t, I’m a actual student unlike you, who is given love from all my teachers, this isn’t a normal way to teaching little kids in SA at all, there’s messed up teachers here but not that messed up, you don’t yell in a students face, knowing the consequences, and still do it.

@Kincaid7 Yes, but what this teacher did was NOT AT ALL the “pursuit of intellect”. This type of behavior does NOT help kids learn. Let’s set aside for a moment, that the teacher treated a young child absolutely horribly, but she also, in that moment, abandoned her responsibility to help her student learn. Do you think, after ripping up the child’s paper and yelling at her to go to the calm down chair, it automatically clicked in the child’s mind, and she suddenly understood how to do the math problem? No, she was left just as lost as she was before, because all the teacher’s actions said was, “I’m tired of dealing with you, get out of my sight.” That is not acceptable behavior from any teacher. Whatever this woman’s problem was, it wasn’t this child, or the others. She had her own issues of frustration and stress from some other source and was taking it out on her student. Completely wrong.

I go to success academy, and the teachers are horrible. First off, in my school a teacher talked behind a parents back saying that he/she is ANNOYING. The parent just wanted to know how their child is doing. The homework is nonstop, and I know many other students have a different point of view of Sa, but for my point of view…the teacher on this video accurately describes my teachers 2nd-4th grade.

This is 100 percent true I’m going thru this nonsense right now . They should be straight forward if they don’t want specific kids instead of humiliation and suspension’s. Stopping kids from learning more and frustrating the parents until eventually they pull the kids out ahead with a bad record as young as 4 5 years old .

I don't feel sorry for this horrible individual that they call a teacher. I'm a teacher's aide and if I feel that I'm witnessing children get disrespected, I'm going to record it. There's been times when my daughter did her work wrong and I will tell her to erase it and redo it, but I'm not going to rip the paper in front of her face. What do you think that's going to do to my own child if I rip up her work in front of her face because she did it wrong? My child will need years of therapy.

My kids just started there and im so disappointed with this school already. They dont care about the kids emotionally. They punish kids for everthing. My daughter got a bad conduct on the second day of school for stretching her legs when she became uncomfortable with having her legs crossed siting on the carpet. At dismissal they have the kids sit on the dirty school yard. You wait on a long line at dismissal only to get to the front of the line and see that your child is not with his class.,you have to pick them up from the main office for if your child did not finish class work that is timed. They want robots, not kids. This is a military reform school.

I get that we teachers get frustrated at times yet I watch this video over and over again to remind myself that if I allow my frustration to get the best of me, this is how I could end up and I’m afraid to become like this. I get at times we teachers have to be harsh but this is bullying and to express stress levels when we should be teaching students how to cope with theirs is like being a hypocrite and that scares me bad!! This video scares and disturbs me because I don’t want to be that teacher.

She shouldn't be in the classroom. The only reason the teacher is crying in that video is because she sad she got caught. This is inexcusable behavior. No one should be treating kids this way. No one. They said that rip and redo is supposed to make them do better. When in reality, it makes kids lose confidence in themselves, and makes themselves feel useless.

This is shocking? The teachers in my public schools in the 1990s treated us like that. They would tear up homework in front of the whole class if it wasn't done right, yell, throw things, get frustrated if we didn't understand, etc. It was pretty regular. These weren't poor schools, these where schools that took care of their teachers and were desired by many to work there.

Take this from a student, the school is not the greatest. Since ive gotten there i feel like there is an immense expectation on the kids and how everyone should be on the same page and same level in terms of there reading levels and academic levels when everyone is super diffrent. And a lot of the times teachers change. Along with every year there is less and less minorities amoungs the teachers and more and more white teachers. The school is not the greatest dont recomend

I can say that this is not the only charter where some teachers engage in this practice. I have witnessed teachers in another charter do the same thing. ‘Rip and Re-Do’ is very common in some classrooms in charter schools. I think parents need to understand that not every charter school teacher is an excellent teacher, being in a charter school does not necessarily mean that your student will get the best education. This is also true of traditional public schools, not all of them are bad, most traditional public schools have high caliber teachers. I know there’s a push for charters in NYC and don’t get me wrong, I am not saying charters are bad, I am saying they are not perfect. Parents must do their homework and understand their child’s needs and also keep an eye on their children whether they are in charter or traditional public schools. I also want to put this out there, the notion that some charter schools have that they are better than public schools is not correct. I have experienced both worlds and I can say that there are public schools out there that are being more innovative than some charters. The bottom line is that no school is perfect and as parents we need to ensure that we do our homework and also that we keep our schools (whether charter or traditional public school) accountable.

This unfortunately happens all too often, especially in urban schools. I attended a title one school back in the 90s that was approximately 80% black, and while I rarely experienced that level of discipline, the black students did. “Rip and redo” as the teacher calls it in this video was the norm. When my parents pulled me out of that school and moved out to the suburbs for a better education, the difference in how the teachers approached the students, even the most poorly behaved ones, was striking. People wonder why these kids become so emotionally hardened when they grow up and have a strong disdain for authority figures...smh.

I think being tough on kids is needed sometimes. But when you treat a child harshly with the intent to teach them to do better, you are also teaching them that this is the way things are done. That if he/she is not happy with a service/job they are supposed to throw the plate at the wall or belittle. We are already in hard times with children being raised by people who don't care what they do. We need teachers who teach children how to engage with the rest of society. To be brave but kind. To believe in their abilities. If children are taught that they are imbeciles then that is what they know. Or perhaps that is the whole point.......

7 years late, but it’s funny how the issue today is that the students rule the roost. I remember a decade ago the issue was that teachers have too much power, teacher unions were too powerful, etc. Now we have a 180 issue where teachers are borderline powerless, students can do whatever and not suffer real consequences, and teachers are leaving the profession in droves. Did there used to be problems a decade ago? Yes. But the problems now are such that even good kids get lost in the sauce when all the attention in class is on the disruption caused by 1 or 2 kids whose parents have even given up.

nicoleago That is NOT how a teacher “cares” or helps a student “fix a mistake”. What that woman did was NOT teaching, it was bullying and intimidation. That does not help anyone learn, especially a child, it only humiliates them and makes them feel badly about themselves. It makes them feel incompetent, as if they are being disobedient and disappointing others, and not want to keep trying to learn. Being a teacher requires patience and professionalism. This teacher did not exhibit that, and clearly, the school agreed her actions were unacceptable for a teacher, thus the reason she faced disciplinary action. When a child gets a wrong answer, a teacher patiently and calmly explains why her answer is incorrect, and shows her how to do it correctly, continuing to have her keep trying until she understands the right way to do it, not punishing her as if she’s doing something wrong by not understanding. You think ripping up a child’s paper, and yelling at her to go to the “calm down chair” (A place the teacher apparently needs to be herself!), as if she has misbehaved, when she hasn’t, is doing ANYTHING whatsoever for teaching her how to do the work the right way? Do you think the child will just magically realize how to do the work the right way because the teacher lashed out at her and berated her for not understanding how to do a math problem? No, the child is still going to be just as confused on how to do the work, and on top of that, will now not want to learn or seek help from her teacher when she’s having difficulty, for fear she will be treated this way again. You want to talk about a rap sheet? This type of behavior from a teacher is just as likely to end in that, as not correcting a child’s incorrect answer in the first place. The woman not only treated a child horribly for no acceptable reason, but in that moment, she also essentially abandoned her job as a teacher to help her student learn how to do work correctly. This was completely unacceptable from a teacher.

Guess what it doesn't break them they stand up fix their mistakes and do better. No wonder Asian teacher's get better results your teachers don't care. They aren't friends they're the kids superior. I am glad my son knows he will be called out for poor work.

@@agonicole The only problem with what you said is that this is teaching them how to be a person that takes orders and can never make a mistake but an entrepreneur ability too succeed is predicated on his/her ability to consistently make mistakes and be ok with it because they know they will eventually figure it out. What the teacher is displaying here is that mistakes are not ok and that if you learn slower than the rest of the class you are just dumb and might as well remove yourself from the rest of the class Instead of saying hey i see that you are struggling with this so let me get the parents on board to help her with the homework at home so she can have extra tutoring time or if the parents don't seem to be on board let me speak too my higher ups too see if we can arrange something to get her more help Or You know what i have an assistant teacher right here in the classroom (which was the one who secretly recorded this video) So let me ask the assistant teacher to sit with this particular student seperate from the class so she can have extra help to catch up with the rest of the class If a teacher only knows how to berate a child and basically throw a fit They are not qualified to be a teacher as they have forgotten they are there to solve a problem which is to take uneducated children and make sure they end the year educated If they have to result too berating a child like your asian teachers do they are creating employees or factory workers who only know how to take orders instead of independent children who are self sufficient because somebody had the patience to teach them how to fish for themselves

I am a public school teacher and I sometimes get kids who were kicked out of charters (yes some specifically from Success Academy). When I attempt to gauge their levels in a middle school classroom, I almost always find that they are several grade levels behind. Then, when I check these students' academic records, I see many of them somehow scored high marks on their state tests the year prior; suggesting they were either given the answers or the answers were changed without them knowing. That's what charters do so they can keep their funding even if they are not helping students.

This comment has confused me, now even us at this school question the eligibility of these state test scores, such success academies like Hudson Yards, for some reason have exceptional consistency to getting high scores, but from my experience we are taught in a very overwhelming but formal way, and we are not given answers, I haven’t and anyone else at this school haven’t, crazy thing I seen this, my math state test was a day ago, but this comment is not true to some extent in question.

@@sincere4369 I am not sure I fully understand your comment. There are many grammatical errors and your word choice is either vague or unclear in several places. If that is a sample of your writing as an 8th grader and you are getting high test scores, then something is not adding up. Also the NY state math test is not until April 26 this year. Schools must give it that day and cannot change it. If you were told that your math state test was yesterday then either you do not have the right information or again, something is not right.

@@MP-ef9yo Oh sorry, I missed myself, I repeat. From what I’ve seen from your comments have confused me. You are accusing SA for many things, such as making fake facts, and also you saying we get answers is insanely offensive to all the teachers who work insanely hard to make sure that, us students are given the right teaching to pass a state exam, I’m guessing you don’t understand SA Teaching, due to you being a Public School teacher, and also I write like that online, only if it’s a non-school related place like KZbin.

Let’s just remember, Success Academy is BY FAR the best performing school in all of New York. The majority of it’s students are Black and Hispanic, yet the perform better on standardized tests then wealthy white neighborhoods. Although the teacher was a bit harsh, the idea is that we need to expect high standards for minorities. No more coddling. I stand by this teacher.

Sometimes kids need reality. The world isn’t a pretty place. Natural human reactions can be hurtful. I wouldn’t be able to be rough on my kid even if I wanted to. So I feel a certain extent of it in a controlled environment is acceptable. Not as a regular practice of course.
