Astrotrain is a favorite decepticon of mine, since i like the movie and the original cartoon. And what i mean by the movie is i mean by the 1986 movie. Since i watched it when i was a little kid years ago. And to this day, i still like transformers for what it is about.

Great review! One thing I was disappointed with in this re-issue is the lack of paint details in the locomotive mode. A few stripes for the connecting rods on the pistons, whoo... I think it could have been a lot better if they'd add a few more details to the engine compartment or the cab. Definitely bleh on the lack of wing shield stickers, too. They can add forearm detail stickers and exhaust vents to the top of his 'pecs' but no stickers for the shield? Fail!

You know what this reminds me of Paul...The Spay-C super Gobot figure that came out years ago it has a very similar look even down to the red eyes and that Transformed into a very beautiful Space shuttle also...Good review.

The white version looks very nice. I have the classics & Takara Astrotrain and pair them as brothers, so this and a vintage color version would be a nice nod to that on my shelves

just a cool tidbit about the arms, they originally were designed to pull out in the prototype, and that's why they indeed look like they should. if you take the arm apart, you can even see the original sliding mechanism moldings, but somewhere along the way before it became an approved design, they nixed the arm pull feature. possibly it didn't meet safety standards. I believe that the WST version remolded the feature back in, so the arms do extend on that wst version. great reviews, btw.

Great figure. When I was a kid, I had to choose between getting Blitzwing or Astrotrain and I could only have one. I chose Blitzwing. Now don't get me wrong; I love my Blitzwing, but I was always sad that I never had Astrotrain. Now that I'm an adult, I can't wait to finally get me some Space Choo-Choo.

Off ebay I brought the purple and black version of this same figure, I've enjoyed him so much, exempt he has a collapsing leg and some flopping parts but I was able to fix the other parts. Its worth the money, people! ;)

In japan during g1 there were two releases of astrotrain.One like this and later one like the one we got in the 80's.The white one was rarer so I think thats why takara re-released this version than hasbro followed and release this over here.

the original G1 toy was dark gray and purple astrotrain was the cartoon color.

I had the purlple one. It looks so much better in black and white. In all three modes as I have never seen a purple locomotive or space shuttle. Never seen a malicious robot in and color!

That astrotrain is a reissue of a reissue. That figure was a hasbro exclusive 5 to 6 years ago. My figure has the sticker on the inside of the back wing. This one does not have the hasbro 2012 stamp and it was 25 dollars.

I honestly don't mind the locomotive mode that he has, I would probably paint up the rods on the wheels and the pipework on the the boiler just to give it that little bit more detail, Not sure how much that shows up in the shuttle mode though, but me being a bit of a train-buff, it just would be more appealing to me if they didn't have everything just that sorta reflective black.

Growing up I had a space shuttle transformer like this, looked almost the same in robot mode too. It wasn't Astrotrain because he didn't have the train mode, but he had a peg where you could combine him to other figures and became the arm, unfortunately I don't know his name or the set he belonged to.

I got one of these about 5 years ago at mr toys toy world for around $30 but it said commemorative series IX at the top of the box and the stickers on the chest piece were pre applied

Had the TRU exclusive at one point it had chipped off paint in the box sent it back, it was very frustrating luckily later on Classics Astrotrain came out.

The white version only came in a Japanese Transformers box and was sold in Japan and the Philippines (where I picked it up, still in it's box, unused) .

"The size is off the scale...." I think Hasbro/Takara should consider an Astrotrain the size of Fortress Maximus. Just G1 - same g1 colors, same transformation ... but with a lot of side options to restore the altforms of the constructicons or a gestalt like the combaticons or stunticons. That would be a dream come true.

Does the old 2005 reissue of Hasbro Commemorative Series IX Astrotrain have the same hasbro logo stamp in train mode? I read somewhere that the 2005 reissue has the factory applied sticker on his chest. Wondering why they remove it on the 2012 reish... anyways great review man! Thumbs up!

Actually, this has been released before, it's a reissue of the 1984 Japanese variant of Astrotrain. For whatever reason if you lived in Japan in 1984, this was what your astrotrain would look like.

Hi! the g1 show accurate look is not black and purple but grey and purple, thats was used on the Ehobby version of this toy (and on the wst by justitoys also) the toy is a very cool triple changer from the beginning of the line, like blitzwing which i recommand to you highly if you dont have it already still there is one thing i wonder, i dont own astrotrain g1 mold and the prototype has extendable arms....do he have this fonction sealed at production? cause its still have the seams on his arms

Hasbro really needs to revisit Astrotrain and Octane in the Generations line. I would love to see them in scale with the new Springer and Blitzwing. Hell, give us an official Broadside, too... Even if he would only have a snowball's chance in Hell of being anywhere near as awesome as Assaulter. Oh... and Sandstorm, too, I guess. May as well do all six.

There is no Diaclone Astrotrain. This figure while produced for a future Diaclone toy, the bot never actually saw release as a Diaclone toy. When Takara saw the success of Transformers, instead decided to cancel the Diaclone line and import back their toys as the rebranded Transformers and Astrotrain was issued as he was originally tooled as, a white space shuttle.
