I spent many school holidays in redbourn, I had family not far from the common, I have some great memories of the place as a lad in the late 60s and 70s. With my cousin we'd be out all day from early morning until dinner time, exploring the fields, or playing football or catching sticklebacks from the little river. No worries about weirdos or anything bad.

I get it was a completely different place back then , More open land within the town , Now the council has sold everything to posh property developers. The markets and old shops have all been priced out. Remember Patton books , I loved that little 2nd hand bookshop, and the garden out back you could have some peace & quiet reading or just relaxing. Since they went its changed about 15 times since bc nobody can afford the rents . The old toy store ryders, same thing happened to that . The lovely museum that used to be near the top of Hatfield road was sold by council to developers who built posh apartments. :/

I used to live in St Albans way back in the 1960s residing at 319 Hatfield Road and attending Beaumont Secondary School... A beautiful town which holds many fond memories for me...

The 'clock tower, didn't actually have a clock after it was first built , it just had a bell , maybe bells' . It was a used to ring the time and also used to ring for curfew mainly during the Roses wars,( Lancaster v York) which started in StAlbans may 1455 and a second battle was fought in February 1461. To let people know the gates would be locked and mornings unlocked. The original clock was only added around 70 years later. Across the road from the railway station is the old city jail and the gates that were used in the opening scenes of the old TV comedy show Porridge :)

I know I'm replying to your comment from 6 years ago, I saw it and and wanted to agree, I moved to StAlbans from west London in the late 1980s just after my first daughter was born, we wanted her to go to a school and grow up outside London, and yes absolutely day and night. Our first place was opposite batchwood hall, from being surrounded by concrete to having fields across the road was very special, I'm sure you felt the same. It took a few months to get used to hearing birds singing in the mornings, and that first summer I had hayfever, thankfully the first and last time I ever had it , From car fumes to pollen lol . My reply is probably too late, if you're thinking of buying a house, its very expensive . It's a lovely historical city, if you enjoy walking there are many, taking you along the river and other places.

So do 150.000 other people,,, town centre is way to small for the amount of people , and the council continues to sell land so property developers can build houses 99% of people can't afford.. It used to be a nice town when I first moved here from London in the late 80s But its changed a lot for the worse over the years. Yes it has some great history, better than most places. But the local council don't make the most of them, they just keep expanding the city and hiking up prices the infrastructure etc can't cope . Schools are over crowded, home waiting lists endless. It's a shame.

I didn't know there was a StAlbans in the USA, after looking at pics of StAlbans in Vermont, it looks a lovely little place, pop' under 7000 compared to ours in England nearly 150k .. its very overcrowded, small streets jammed up at certain times of the day. Your StAlbans ( on a map) looks close to a lovely large lake, pics of your city and your wide roads look very appealing, its quite historic compared to a lot of American towns. Our StAlbans is great for its history etc , but its expensive and busy I'd swap with you ;)

Overpriced is what St Albans is . Easy to do it in a day because there's nothing to do except see the market which is good. Some of the pubs and bars are OK but as for everything else I wouldn't waste your time or money I. E the waffle house is megabucks. The train station and surrounding area of it are revolting and there are a host of expensive taxis waiting outside to rob your wallet. The town hall isn't worth looking at.. For the best shopping go to Watford however not a pretty town but cassiobury park is very nice and shames verulamium into obscurity. Qualifications.. 38 years of living in St Albans.. Never again.. 😂 😂 😂 😂

Ha ha how right you are,I lived in St Albans for 40 years but be leave or not it used to be a great place to live that was until the city elite moved into the area and pushed property prices through the roof. It's now full of people with their heads up their arses who drive 4x4s and think money maketh the man. That's why i moved to Dorchester .

mrnatty122 absolutely spot on m8. I still live here, on holywell hill. The rich people these days aint from Stalbans & don't give a crap about the citys history/heritage Which makes it easier for the council to sell of every bit of green space they can They even sold off the Hatfield rd museum its now posh apartment flats . Oh they sold off the building college too , yep posh apartments And the art college. So the art college displays what it can in the old town hall along with a few bits squeezed in from the old museum. They rearranged a listed building (old town hall) & turned it into a tacky gift shop & restaurant yet they call it a 'New museum' it's terrible. They would sell off the roman park to developers if they could find a way around the red tape of a protected ancient monument. It was a nice city when I 1st moved here. All the lil knick knack antique shops Gone Paton books been on holywell hill 100yrs Gone Everything good has gone Its all coffee shops & restaurants.. Such a shame .

Samantha TKO I agree with everything you say , I still live here , although I will defend the park Cassiobury is a park Verulam park was a roman town (well half of it, other half is owned by Lord asshole & ploughed the crap outa his half the roman town after a massive pay out to stop ploughing it by a MP in 2005 . (Was only meant to plough during ww2) carried on till '05 . We put some test trenches to see the archaeology It's all gone!! 3rd largest & 1 of the most important Roman cities in Europe ploughed away. So the park with the lake at least protects that half of the city . It's a 5 min walk from me & is the only place of worth left apart from the Norman abbey. ..

I would go there to see the medieval cathedral along with other historic buildings and streets, so there’s plenty that I would be interested in outside of the market. Obviously you are not someone who appreciates architecture/ history in the same way.
