St. Albans has a very historic city centre and can be perfectly visit from London as a day trip by train. But what to do in St. Albans? The main attractions and things to do in St. Albans are its historic town centre, climb the old clock tower, visit St. Albans Cathedral and Abbey Church and discover the Roman influence on St. Albans City.
If you love this don't forget to support me: www.tipeeestream.com/svenywhe...
-------------------------
St. Albans has a very rich history and you will see this back in its architecture when you visit this beautiful English town from London. St. Albans was the second biggest city in the UK during the Roman time and became afterwards a very important Medieval town with a very important Christian influence. It is even a popular pilgrimage destination nowadays.

One of the worst things about lockdown is that I've been unable to go to St.Albans since the Summer! I usually go every month or so. The market is fantastic and I miss walking around Verulamium. I'd definitely recommend visiting the Verulamium museum, where they keep three very well preserved mosaics found in the 1930s. Thanks for uploading this!

Would have loved to visit the Verulamium museum but it was closed due to the lockdown. I still want to go back to visit the market as well.

Medieval is about 500 years too late for St Albans - First settlement there was around 20 BC, but it became a city (Verulamium) when the Romans took it over in 43 AD. A lot of the city is still based on the Roman lay out. Although it certainly has a lot of medieval parts. The Fighters used to be my local back when I lived in St Albans. DEFINITELY worth a visit, lovely pub that. P.S. Verulamium prnonunciation is: VE (as in the start of vegetable)-RUH(as in rum)-LAY-ME-UM.

Another bit of St Albans History that I love; In the early 11th century, the Abbott of the Cathedral (Ealdred) decided to renovate the place, and in the process stumbled across the lair of the dragon, Wormenhert. The Abbot flattened the lair to make way for the renovations and that's about all they say about it; but there you go. Bits of St Albans Abbey are built on the site of a dragon's lair! Very exciting!

Right opposite the train station is the building that was the old jail house, it replaced the old gate house Gaol opposite the abbey . The old gates are those used in opening scenes of the prison comedy Porridge . Outside there's an old cannon ( found in the ground during building work) originally 32lb smoothbore 1840 , later rebored and rifled to fire 64lb 1877 .. Its worth spending 10 mins looking around, at the back is an old water fountain with a sculpture that surprises everyone ( inc myself) the first time I saw it .

This would be improved by a little background research - for example, The Guinness Book of Records confirms the The Fighting Cocks pub originated in the 11th Century, not 1756 as this lad incorrectly mentions; also, anyone who knows “Snorbens” would not make the error of describing St Albans Cathedral as St Albans Church! Still, it was fascinating (not!) to hear the fascinating story of how he was given a hair-cut voucher! 🤣
@Svenywhere
@Svenywhere 3 жыл бұрын
As I mentioned official dated and recorded name of the Fighting Cocks is 1756. Yes it exists probably for way older. How old exact there isn't proof for, also not if it is officially the oldest. You are right of course that the big part attached to the Abbey is St. Albans Cathedral and not St. Albans Church.
