Investigators from the York Regional Police #2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau are seeking a suspect and appealing for witnesses after two suspicious fires in the City of Richmond Hill.
On Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 11:09 p.m., police responded to reports of a tree engulfed in flames, close to a residence, in the area of Kellogg Crescent and Verdi Road. Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene and extinguished the fire.
No injuries or property damage was reported.
Video surveillance shows a dark-coloured, compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) stopping on the street. The suspect exits the vehicle and walks up to the tree, ignites it and flees the scene in the SUV.
On Friday, May 31, 2024, at 9:52 a.m., police were contacted by a homeowner who resides in the area of Kellogg Crescent and Verdi Road. The homeowner reported a tree on his property showed signs of being burned.
Video surveillance shows that on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 11:08 p.m., a male is in a walkway between two residences and ignites a small fire on a tree at the rear of one residence.
The suspect walks back to his vehicle and flees the scene. There was no damage to property and the fire went out on its own after approximately 20 seconds.
The same suspect is believed to be responsible for both occurrences.
The suspect described as male, approximately 5’11”, 180 pounds, full beard, wearing light-coloured trackpants, a dark-coloured jacket, light-coloured sweater, baseball hat and white sneakers.
Investigators are appealing to anyone who witnessed suspicious activity, or anyone with a video recording that captured suspicious activity in the area, to please come forward.
