I am absolutely awestruck by this woman’s brilliance and insight. No not because of her “disability” and being autistic - not at all. I’m blown away by her brilliance and her thoughtfulness regarding an industry that desperately needed someone with “fresh eyes” to look at their processes and find ways to improve them. Seeing the various systems that she’s helped to implement shows that improvement is always possible and in all things we should never say that we’ve done it the best we can and that’s that. I’m not a vegan. I’m not an activist. I’m not anything but a guy who found his way here through the internet rabbit hole and stumbled upon something here that is truly fascinating.

Joesph Moua I wouldn't "want" to be eaten by anything or anyone else...unless I was dying anyway, and other's survival depended on eating me. I would just hope that they put me out of my misery quickly and effectively. I am actually glad that Dr. Temple Grandin has put herself in the animals shoes in order to design methods of slaughter that minimize the animal's anxiety and suffering. I understand that humans are omnivorous and if we "must" have such an appetite for animal flesh, that these industrialized factory farming methods have to be put in place to meet our demands, then I would hope that they make this process as quick and as painless for the animals as possible. Humans also need to be aware of the environmental impact our "demand" for affordable meat is having on our planet. It wouldn't hurt for the majority of us to lower our meat consumption dramatically as it is also affecting our health. I have made the personal decision to choose VEGAN as often as possible. The Vegan Society has an ethical stance[1] against beekeeping, but many commercial crops[2] require to be pollinated by domestic bees that are forced to breed and then worked to death. It's basically impossible to have a nutritionally complete vegan diet without forced pollination, but fodder crops do not exploit bees. Human food crops directly kill five times[3] as many bees as all livestock slaughter combined. Vegans should also make sure that their seasonally changing food exporters don't rely on insects[4], terriers[5], sheep[6], ducks[7], organic fertilizers[8] or anything from developing countries[9] where animal labor is still common. kimmie Wise 75 % of crops grown are fed to the billions of animals we breed annually, unnecessarily, to be exploited and killed . We don’t need to eat animals to be health, we do however need plants. Feeding billions of animals to get second hand nutrients is the most inefficient way to eat, causing the most amount of deaths. Of course veganism is about granting all sentient beings rights to their bodily autonomy. @@theecologist10 If you are familiar with the older ways of mechanized poultry processing you would realize that the birds were hung live and basically rode upside-down to have their heads "pinched" off on the line. Also, you will notice, as is shown to us by Dr. Grandin that the birds, when young, have tons of space and they grow familiar with their surroundings and other birds and they are thriving in the house environment. You will also notice that the males are "displaying" or showing off to the females in the house - that wouldn't happen with a stressed bird. They are then taken, as comfortably as can be, to the processing plant and are "stunned" not knowing of the carrying methods. Yes, these companies obviously care for the birds as humanely as possible. The USDA is always present making sure all steps are in place.

The only thing I think is wrong with this is that their hung upside down first. If they were stunned and then hung upside down would feel a bit better but it is great to know they are not being treated badly whilst they are alive

I thought this was a very respectable video that shows the humane way that 99% of our meat goes from farm to table. This practice is much similar to the Tyson Corporation in that automation is key to successful production and safety. I wish more people would watch videos like this to help dis-bunk the idea that meat production is cruel and inhumane.

I'm afraid those statements are untrue. It's no myth that it is inhumane, and in actual fact, 98% of animal farming is factory farming, which means male chicks being ground up or suffocated in giant plastic bags, sheep, cows, pigs and poultry being kept in such cramped conditions that they can barely move their whole lives and they never see the sun, chickens having their beaks chopped off so that because they are so distressed, they can't peck the other birds around them, calves being ripped from their mothers which causes irreversible mental damage, and stun methods that rarely work, causing the animals to struggle in the air, hung from their leg by a chain before their throat is slit, and running around the kill floor in terror. I could go on and on. The industry is NOT humane.

There is literally a video in this same series about the slaughter of both pigs and cows and none of them are hung by chains before the slaughter. Cows are not harmed by the taking of calves on two fronts. 1. Beef cattle keep their calves and in fact motherhood instincts are bred for because they're kept on open ranges and need to protect the calves from predators. And 2. dairy cows are the exact opposite, and lose interest in their calves the moment they get them cleaned off from the birth smells. Calves are removed from them for their own safety, because dairy cows are so blase and apathetic that they FREQUENTLY LAY ON CALVES that are left with them, smothering and\or crushing them. All things we have video evidence of thanks to Iowadairyfarmer and TDF Honest Farming on Facebook, the former showing how calm and fine mother cows are with their calves being taken, and the later showing explicitly the consequences of not being able to do it quick enough. The things you mention don't happen because they don't make SENSE. The point of animal agriculture is to make QUALITY end products. All the practices you suggest would harm the animals-- WHY would someone so money-minded as you say do something that would HARM the source of their money? It doesn't even make logical sense. Poultry birds don't need to be stressed to peck at each other. Or anything, for that matter. I've literally watched video of a free-range bird who cannibalized ITSELF. Had to have a hood put over it because it kept pecking huge sores in its own skin and eating itself. Birds are MEAN. They are dinosaurs and they know it.

I worked those farms... the turkeys are used to being around people. a farm worker walks through twice a day to pick up any dead ones, or the other turkeys will eat them. If you find one with a blood spot... you wring the neck, as they will eat an injured comrade alive. They are cannibals. You burn the dead. Disease is a big concern with turkeys. You never enter without dressing in a suit and stepping in iodine. Decades ago, I also worked the processing plants, very efficient. The first 15 minutes of a workers shift seems ok... we speed it up, after an hour the workers are buzzing along on autopilot. Not a great job.

Do you think these turkeys are scared when on that conveyer belt rolling them into the truck compartments? Are they scared when in the truck compartments as the truck is driving them along? Are they even scared when being rolled off the truck into the slaughterhouse, before they can see why they're there? With pigs, cows, and sheep, I would say that the answer is "yes". But turkeys don't have as high intelligent levels as the mammals do, and I don't think they have a clue why they're being moved. They may even be finding what's happening some kind of neat adventure. Until they get very close to the slaughter line and can start seeing what's happening to some of their friends. Unfortunately, there probably is a few minutes period of terror before they're stunned unconscious. But, that's still better than if they're not stunned correctly, or at all, which unfortunately still happening way too often!! Isn't it much easier to successfully stun chickens and turkeys fully unconscious, because they're smaller, then with, for example, cows? Stunning animals unconscious still makes the experience alot less fearful, if the stunning is done correctly. The problem is some jerkasses at some slaughterhouses refuse to watch to make sure animals are officially being stunned completely, and some are stooping low enough to deliberately physically abuse them too. The videos I've seen of that made me sick!! If there is the option of being able to stun animals unconscious, why the hell are many places not taking that option seriously enough, and even abusing them!? Because some of those people are horrible and really don't care what the animals go through!! The laws in America, even with the humane slaughter act, don't lean very hard on how livestock animals are treated. The majority of people don't care enough how people treat animals that will shortly be cut up and packed under cellophane at the supermarkets. But, these animals are still alive and still do experience fear when something horrible is happening or about to happen. Even turkeys, in spite of not being as intelligent as pigs or sheep, are still intelligent enough to know some things, and to experience what's around them. They're still alive, so they're still able to be aware and to experience something. Because the meat industry is not gonna go anywhere, all people need to remember is to take the stunning seriously. And treat them well every second that they're still concious.
