The Visa was presented at the 1978 Paris Motor Show as a replacement for the Ami 8. Its aesthetics turned out to be modern and original, in keeping with what is expected of a Citroën, especially in the interior, with its peculiar controls arranged in satellites at the sides of the steering wheel and motorcycle-like square gauges.
At first there were the Spécial and Club variants, with a 652 cm³ two-cylinder engine derived from the 2 CV, and Super, with a modern 1124 cm³ Peugeot four-cylinder. To boost the image of the model, in 1980 the Super X, 5 appeared in some markets with a 1219 cm³ 64 hp engine and a more ambitious presentation. For its part, the Super was renamed Super E, from economic. To improve fuel consumption, development was extended and a new Solex 32 PBISA 11 carburettor was installed. However, Citroën leaders were aware that the disputed aesthetics of the Visa hindered their commercial possibilities. Consequently, Heuliez was commissioned to redesign it in order to stylize its image.
The Visa II was launched in March 1981 with no changes to the range. The aesthetic renovation of the model coincided with the start of marketing and manufacturing of the model in Spain at the Vigo plant. In 1982, the range was expanded with two new versions with sporty air and higher performance, the GT and Crono, with 80 and 93 hp respectively, both with a 1360 cm³ engine. Also, in 1983, a truly unique convertible called Plen Air was created. Produced by Heuliez.
In 1984, the interior was redesigned by removing the satellites. In 1985, the Visa GTI appeared, a truly sporty version that took from the Peugeot 205 GTI the complete previous train and the mechanics of 1580 cm³ and 105 CV; in 1986 it would increase its power to 115 hp.
With the appearance of the Citroën AX in 1987, more modern and smaller, some of the versions began to be withdrawn from the market, disappearing completely from the catalog at the end of 1988, coinciding with the launch of the diesel AX.
More than 1.2 million units had been produced, which was a commercially acceptable result, although it is worth mentioning the remarkable success of the Citroën C15, with a similar amount until the end of its production in 2005.
