Hi! Thanks for watching! I've ordered additional fluid heads directly from Teris.

Great video, Scott. Question for you... Why do video tripods differ from photo tripods in that video tripods have 6 legs (2 poles for each of 3 legs)? Also, why are the 3 legs linked at the base whereas there is no such linking in a photo tripod? Couldn't you just get a video head and put it on a regular photo tripod?

Good question and I noticed afterwards I didn't really cover that here. There are actually video tripods with typical single leg setups as well, but they tend to be sold as more travel friendly versions. The reason for the thicker or wider leg design is just stability. When panning, you can't have any twist at all in the legs, since it will show in the video when you stop and they return to their "standard" position. Photography tripods don't have that requirement since you're not really moving while taking a photo. Mid level spreaders (having the legs connected at the middle section) will further that rigidity more than having the legs connected at the base, but having them connected at the base is faster since the spread/footprint doesn't change when you raise or lower the tripod. Having them connected at either position is usually necessary though because the legs don't lock into place like photography tripods will. (Sachtler's Flowtech tripod - the legs of the $8,000 setup I showed at the beginning of the video - is actually one of the first that DOES lock into place and doesn't require the legs to have that connection at all, which also allows them to open up wider and go lower than most others). The connected parts (spreaders) can be extended to any length (not only snap in at different positions) which will allow you to spread the legs out freely as you need for stability or fitting into smaller spaces. There's probably a bit more to it but that's the general idea. Stability and torsional rigidity is the main goal for video tripods since you'll be moving while recording. Honestly- if you don't pan or tilt while recording, any solid tripod and any head at all, fluid or not, will do the trick. When you start introducing movement is where true video tripods and fluid heads shine.

WOW! that was really interesting to see how those tripods work, it's not something I can afford nor need that much but it was nice to see and know. 1 question though, is it drastically worse if someone has a regular tripod (for example Manfrotto befree) and gets a video head for it? I'm sure it won't be the same quality but what are the "drop offs"? And by the way, pretty much half the video I was more focused on the wall (I really love Japan so it was nice to see as well lol)

Thanks so much! And good question. In that case, you would mostly need to be careful what head you choose since this "ball type" with the ball on the bottom that lets you level it wouldn't fit on something like the Befree. There are flat types which could still screw right on top of a standard tripod, and there are also "standard" style legs that do have the 75mm ball compatibility. Either way would work and if you're extremely picky you might lose the rigidity of proper video legs, especially with panning the legs may flex a bit, but for portability's sake it might be worth it. There are also "travel" friendly tripods more geared towards video- I think MeFoto made one recently called the MeVideo or something like that and it looked pretty great. There are others as well and of course there will be sacrifices but they're a very good middle ground. Also- if you're not moving during the shots (panning or tilting) any solid tripod/head will definitely do the trick as long as it's stable. Hope that helps! And glad to be able to include a little "scenery" :) I'll try and find some more fun spots around the house to do videos too!

@@ScottDumas thanks for the reply, yeah sounds that the idea of having a video head for a regular tripod isn't good, but honestly for my type of things it would be better to get maybe a rail or something like that which will also be cheaper, mostly shooting products at home I'd say. sort of the type of your unboxing videos I guess. But my question was more in terms of interest and less on making ot work for me in real life. I get much info from your channel really love watching your videos even when the contents won't be a product or thing that I'll ever be able to use.
@ScottDumas5 жыл бұрын
Well I really appreciate that! :) And please never hesitate to ask any questions at all. Like you said, for stationary cameras really anything can work. Video tripods like this would be overkill if that's what you'll be using them for. Nice, of course, but overkill :-P

Thanks for good review. Teris looks like a very good Sachtler clone. One qustion I have, I live in very cold place, and looking for tripod heads, that can work correctly at temperatures below -30 Celsius. Like Sachtlers, some Vintens and Cartoni heads. Is anybody here, who had frosty expirience wes Teris heads, and can tell me, how it works? Thanks!
