Thanks. Many of our Driver's eye views take us inside various signal boxes. For example on the Cumbrian Coast or Chiltern Take Two - in many cases signal boxes that have long since been abolished. However we also show modern signalling centres. For example all FIVE responsible for Eurostar services from Brussels to London. We haven't made another production like One Day in Severn based entirely on the signalling though.

I think he was the guard , wanting to know why they couldn't just run straight in the platform . and if he should get off the train and go to the phone at the signal man .

Was this signalbox abolished or did Network Rail keep it considering it's Europe's biggest mechanical one?
@edwardianeccentric8 жыл бұрын
It is still in daily use, not because it is the largest but because the costs of resignalling the Shrewsbury area have so far proved prohibitive.
@szymongorczynski76218 жыл бұрын
edwardianeccentric I have already found that out but thanks. Now it's the world's biggest box!

It's incredible that this signal box is still in use to this day. Network Rail even did a little refurbishment in 2021: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3yso6N3htiioNE (If you compare the two videos you can see that this box has not changed at all in these 30 years!)

no still here in 2019, and still going strong with almost twice as many train movements now as there was when this was filmed in 1990 and more additional services coming over the next couple of years. Shrewsbury is seeing a kind of railway rennaisance right now with both passenger numbers and services doubling since privatisation. Platform 3 is now back in full operational service and the station and canopys are undergoing full referbishment. All new rolling stock will also be put into service over the next few years and from May 2019 Shrewsbury will see 3 trains per hour to Birmingham.
