DV capture is a great method for digitising analogue video and has many pros as you've explained. It's usually only Americans who think otherwise due to the difference in chroma subsampling between NTSC and PAL.
@Capturing-MemoriesКүн бұрын
It's no longer the same reason, DV is an obsolete format and has to be converted to a modern codec to reduce the big file size while keeping a good visual quality, So if capturing an analog tape into DV then convert to h.264 or 265 why not capture in the native AVI 4:2:2 sampled by the capture hardware and encode to the same final format without a poor middle man like DV (whether 4:2:0 or 4:1:1). Hard drive storage size is no longer an issue, so 13GB/hour or 70GB/hr for a temporary file that will be deleted later is not a good reason to limit the quality, Sure if the customer is asking for DV like in Colin's case I don't see anything wrong with that.

@@Capturing-Memories As far as I know, there is no I-Frame only format that TV sets can play. So you always have to save a GOP format as well as a non-GOP format.

Colin, The programmer is called the RT809H that can read files from bad chips and write them back to into new chips (Recover data). The programmer is mainly used for LCD TVs with bad firmware issues in the emmc ICs that tend to have bad blocks along with time and start to get stuck in logo or other menu issues with the TVs. But it also can program eeproms etc. If the VCR has a eeprom issue then this programmer can fix it.

I believe Sony's solution to fake progressive 1080 into HDV was called 1080PsF (progressive segmented frame), and was essentially the same regular 1080i signal but interpreted as progressive 24/30 fps. Basically the camera laid down a progressive frame across both fields (or with a cadence in the case of 24p), and was a way to cheat in order to save bandwidth, and was used along with equipment that couldn't handle the full 1080p 60 (i.e. certain SDI switchers). It's somewhat similar to what Panasonic did with their DVX100 mini DV cameras to encapsulate 24p into a 60i signal. The HDV camcorder you have there may also play standard miniDV tapes recorded in LP mode, which is something a lot of the more professional DVCAM decks couldn't do reliably.

That certainly is how Canon still did progressive video on their early solid state HD camcorders.

The ADVC-100/110 require an external power supply, and can't be powered from the Firewire port - another thing that's nicer about the ADVC-55.

The problem with the ADVC-55 is that if the sync is not perfectly alright, they will drop frames. I use mine with an older prosumer video mixer which acts as a frame synchronizer/TBC, but keeps the field/frame structure intact.

I tried a DVCAM on the Sony DHR1000, I thought nothing would be seen, instead it plays it at half speed, but decodes it correctly. So the decoding part is the same as the Sony DVCAM DSR-30P, probably also the head control and the heads themselves, but the tape cannot run at the speed of a DVCAM
Nearly all Sony DV decks play DVCAM. I will have to try it.

I use my dig8 camcorder (TRV340) as an A/D converter when capturing VHS footage. Works perfectly and never had any problems...capturing using Premiere 6.5 and capturing at 28 Mbps...much more than needed for VHS...but nice to know that is the highest quality that you can get. My HDV camcorders...3 of them... unfortunately not working any more. So ridden with ALL the error codes SONY had available 😣

I prefer the Canopus ADVC-100 because you can switch on locked audio (like DVCAM) on the device. But then not every mini DV camcorder will work, which you can tell because the sound cuts out every 20 minutes or so. The SMD Electrolytic Capacitors on the ADVC-100 didn't last 50000 hours for me. Continuous operation with DRAKE ESR800XT Plus Satellite Receiver.

Not yet. As I understand it, only two models were sold in the UK and they wouldn't play each others tapes. So it wasn't really a format.

I picked up a D-VHS machine a few years ago, but it refuses to accept a cassette. It just doesn’t seem to “notice” that you’re trying to push a tape in. I’ve never had to deal with a D-VHS tape yet though, so I’m in two minds whether to just eBay it as-is, or have a look at it.

@@timf-tinkering I have one, comparing the conversion of VHS or Super VHS tapes on this device, outputting through the Super Video cable, it is about 10 times better than any other VCR I have, there is a gain in definition when converting tapes on it. Of course, it is not that expressive, since it is a VHS tape.

I think Canon was first who implemented progscan for HDV: 25P for PAL and 24P/30P for NTSC, all in regular interlaced container. Pro versions had 24F/25F/30F properly flagged. The last Canon consumer HDV camcorder, the HV40, also has 24F in addition to 24P and 30P. Sony added these rates to its semi-pro camcorders, but not to consumer-grade ones. No 50p/60p, of course, there was no bandwidth for that. But 1080i30 deinterlaced to 60p looks quite good, not much worse than 720p60.

Seems like this DSR-30 has the same problem that my DHR-1000 must have had at some point. It had already been repaired when I got it, but the soldering was the most horrendous I have ever seen in electronic equipment, so I went through and re-did all those solder joints - which happened to be all the same ones you have worked on so far plus the electrolytic capacitors. As for analog video capture, I too very much lean towards the method of using DV based equipment. I have once done somewhat of a comparison capturing a known good S-VHS recording, with the AD converters in Sony camcorders, and a fancy Blackmagic capture card that also supports more modern super high bitrate codecs. I found this did not give any extra detail, if anything there was more video noise than in the DV capture which is not useful. Also the colours looked rather dull, and indeed audio and video quickly went out of sync, because the Blackmagic card ignored all frames that were not 100% perfect - and the VCR I used did have a TBC, so the output could not have been too terrible. That was the last time I used that Blackmagic card...

Blackmagic Intensity (3x PRO 2x Shuttle tested with 2 PCs) does not adopt the speed of the source device. Even with a DVD player, the junk doesn't run for 3 minutes if STOP at dropped frames is switched on. The software's factory setting is STOP at dropped frames off😉The rather incompetent support is still arguing about this to this day. TV engineer from Hamburg, so no idea about technology. All my justified opinion👀

@@TTVEaGMXde The card I tried was an Intensity Pro if I recall correctly. I noticed the default setting was to not stop at dropped frames. The S-VHS footage I captured as a test was noticeably out of sync after as little as 30 seconds.
