One business thing that's worked for me is when it comes to channel managers/consultants, pay on a commission basis only (similar to how MCNs work). The person becomes more invested in the success of your channel that way & is motivated to think outside of the box on ways to increase revenue for your channel. If someone talks a good game but does nothing to increase your channel's bottom line then they get nothing.

I personally don't want to to think my channel as a business because it will add unnecessary pressure for me. But, I'm just doing this for me to connect with others that share my gameplay and gaming news. If by a miracle my channel starts to grows more, than I would start to think about it as a business but not now. Since, im a very small and enjoying my time putting content.

This was great advice! I got my business license for my channel once my tax person told me it would help and from then on I've been learning more about tax deductions and such. But now that I'm really trying to build it up to earn a full time income so I can be at home with my daughter, it's tougher than I thought. I know it takes patience and persistence, and I'm glad I found your channel to help me along the way! I went for a DBA I recommend folks starting out online with a small business to go for that rather than leap into the LLC. Especially if you start out with a business website. Look it up on Google. Overall great tips and yeah KZbin can become an amazing route to get any business started or an existing one to jump off into greater and greater success. It does take time though to create a channel that is truly valuable to the online world and KZbin community. Curated!

I'm planning my to file my LLC when I start making a taxable level of revenue. I'm just starting as a content provider, but I've been studying the process and researching how I could use the platform as a vehicle to launch a business since 2007. While it has been a long time planning, I've learned that it all pays off. Since launching my channel, I've had a pretty good experience that's been fairly typical of those who have been successful in forming a media-content business. It's hard and it does, indeed, take consistency and perseverance to success (among many other things). Treat it as a business from the start. That's the best advice I've received and can offer. That doesn't mean go "all in" right out of the gate: Research, plan, develop, test, execute and grow. Continue to test and adjust. That's SOP for almost any lofty and endearing achievement.

Thank you so much for answering my questions!!! My daughter and I didn't originally start our channel as a way to make money. We started it as a way to spend time together, to have fun, and to be an encouragement to kids as well as entertain kids. As our channel has start to grow and we have had a small monthly revenue for the last few months, we started wondering if we should be turning it into a business. I am starting to read from the list of books that helped you. I don't have the funds to invest in anything outside of books right now, but I have started a notebook with a "wish list" of things we want to invest in. Being in the kid's space, and having kids as the primary audience, it seems like you have to build and grow your channel differently. I would love know if anyone has advice on this - it seems that thumbnails matter a whole lot more than the metadata (tags, title, description) in the kid's space, and there are other differences I have noticed, like upload times corresponding with when school is out, etc. Again, thank you so much Tim!!! This was very helpful!

ImHealthyWC Believe it or not, my analytics and Tube Buddy both show my best upload time is 11 pm on Saturday nights! Why? I have no idea, but it seems like Saturdays are the most viewed day on our channel and late night seems to have the highest viewing time. I have to wonder if that is due to other time zones or other countries? We recently changed our schedule to Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday because we had the most views on those days. We are testing it out to see if our views improve. Thanks for the tip! If this weekend thing doesn't work, we will start trying to upload early.
@HealthyWC-28 жыл бұрын
Sunny's Toys Odd then. Who watches your content more and where do you live? ( For example: I live in America and some of my views come from Indonesia. ) Probs the kids you watch live in a different timezone. If so then, you have to do some math to see what time is 11Pm on Sat night for that country. (EXAMPLE: NOT CORRECT AT ALL, Mexico is one day ahead of us and they are in morning when we are in the night, so I upload late at night ) Just an idea. Glad to hel :).

Whether you are thinking about your channel as a business long term or not, you should be aspiring to creating the best content possible and getting better at it, find new ways and formats within the platform to connect with people. Even if becoming a business is not the plan, having a strategy and really paying attention to your audience through feedback and analytics is only going to make you better at communicating your message and reach the people you want. That means investing time and possibly money into learning how to be better and finding the things that you can do now without spending a dime to get better results. This is a highly competitive space, but you can still win within it, you just have to be strategic. Having the strategy isn’t always about a business, just have a strategy for what you are going to do. Great advice. Love the channel

Very good point about not forming an LLC until your business can pay for the expenses that go with it. I formed one when I got serious about my other channel, but it didn't go anywhere so I was spending much more to keep the LLC than I was receiving. Needless to say, I closed out the LLC. Now, with this channel I am waiting for it to pass a threshold that would allow for the channel to pay the legal expenses before forming the LLC a 2nd time. Plus, we cannot forecast the speed of our growth, so give your channel time to really establish itself. Also, need to consider KZbin's constantly changing their rules if you are only relying on adsense, which is not advisable.

I was recommend that I get an LLC for my channel. I have a movie review channel and it is different than a "how to channel." I am not selling and or making my own products, though I guess I could. I do spend a fair amount of money on viewing films, and advertising the channel via social media promotions Facebook, Adsense etc. I was told to form an LLC to be able to claim expenses around the channel as my goal is to turn it into a full time business. Has anyone else heard this advice? Thanks for your insight.
@SunnyandLola8 жыл бұрын
I have heard that if you form an LLC, you can file taxes for your business (which you will have to pay on the revenue one way or another because it's earned income), but there are things that you can count towards your business expenses that might help with tax deductions (which would decrease how much tax you will pay on the revenue you make). For example, if you go to see new movies as part of your channel, then you could possibly count those as business expenses, as well as the travel to and from your home to the theater. I'm not an accountant, and I am not qualified to tell you specifics about tax codes, deductions, etc. But this is also the advice I have received and one of the reasons I considered starting an LLC. We were told by a former accountant that since we are technically losing money on our business right now, if we have an LLC and include our expenses (which outweigh our revenue), we could limit our tax liabilities because we are actually losing money and not making enough to cover those expenses. But if we ever make enough to cover those expenses and give us a profit, those deductions will still help lessen the tax we will have to pay. I hope that makes sense, keeping in mind that I have no experience with accounting or business affairs. :)
@aryadna8 жыл бұрын
You can make all the deductions as a sole proprietor though, can't you? Since an LLC is just a pass-through entity and doesn't actually pay taxes... Or is the tax liability different for you as a business owner if you have an LLC?

I've always heard that if you can take your expenses from something that's making you income you can claim it as a "Business Expense" on your taxes and it helps save money. I'm working on growing a podcast (and related Gaming Channel) centered around entertainment and so that means keeping up with the latest movies, games and stuff like that. So my goal is to do the same. It'd be nice to pay tax free on my entertainment. :)

@Insidethekilt8 жыл бұрын
A legitimate business is one that generates revenue. It is more a mindset thing that a documentation thing. Depending on the state and cost 100 a month seems low especially if you count the cost of having someone file the paperwork for you. I would say its closer to 4-500 a month before you need to worry about an LLC. There are three reasons you need a business structure. 1) Tax purposes (LLC by itself does nothing there). Selecting S corp status helps but then you have additional cost of another separate tax return 2) Investment - letting someone invest in your company (probably not an issue at that low a level) 3) Legal protection - Depending on the type of videos you are doing this can be a very low risk to a much higher risk. If you think someone could get hurt doing the things you talk about in your videos, then get an LLC first. And general liability insurance as well. Most people probably need a book keeper before they need an accountant. Just someone to clean up transactions etc. You can find a lot of people who have bookkeeping experience locally or other places. As they grow they can move up to a cpa Glad your CPAs are teachers as well. Understanding those things can help every business owner
@DarkBlueNutrition5 жыл бұрын
So not to stack on to this question, but - you mentioned if we make ~ 100/month we can start thinking of setting up that LLC. What about if that first year is a slow start? And we’re doing business, but under that amount? Would you say just do taxes as a sole proprietor, then move to an LLC the following year, assuming you picked up speed?

Thank you for your tips and including the accountants you use! Have a few questions. Once you become monetized, google Adsense will ask for your bank information and name to send funds to. This is where we’re stuck since we’re clearly a business name but don’t want to start an LLC when we’re not making a lot of money yet. So….our question is, can we use a name and personal account for ad sense to funnel those funds and then change to a business account later on once we are making more money? Does ad sense have a personal and then business option for channels? If anyone that’s monetized can help with this question, we’d greatly appreciate it

Something not mentioned in this video but I think implied when talking about making investments is to save your receipts from anything you buy to invest in your Chanel, you can use it as a tax write off.

Do you have to form an LLC? I own a sole proprietorship biz that may one day INC. But if I generate income from KZbin can I role it into what my biz makes? OR do I have to create an alternate biz?

Hi Tim! I was watching a ton of your vids and i went to a social event and someone mentioned that if I start an LLC, i also need to look into something called "Registered Agent". I was wondering if you know anything about that and how to pick the right Registered Agent that provides the best services for KZbinrs. Thx!

Is it true that English speaking creators get better paid than Spanish speaking creators? I am starting a channel uploading 1 video a week at the moment. when I get into the winter break from school I plan to upload more times a week. But I don´t know if continue my channel in english or do things in spanish which is my native tongue.

Hi, Interesting Info. you gave Thanks for that but i have one question if you can answer briefly will be helpful because i am KZbinr too - If we are US citizen or any other country and creating content in our country and register my channel under a business adsense account with a LLC in some TAX haven country like Dubai or may be Cayman Islands etc. and recieve YT Income there from Google. Do i need to pay TAXES in my own country or i just need to pay TAXES to country my KZbin channel LLC is registered according to their TAX % ?
