It's funny because the guy from the interview clips is actually one of the few developers on Sonic Team who was aware of Forces' flaws and willing to speak out about it to the team. He was practically begging the management to stop falling back on cliches and let the series actually build off itself, but I guess they decided they just needed to get the product shipped as fast as possible, and then it was his job to go out there and sell it as best he could.

Actually no, Mania is not an illusion. What happens is that a few levels are illusions, and a few of them are not. For example, stardust speedway may be a illusion, and Chemical Plant too. The final boss is also an illusion as well. Basically, a lot of illusion shit was happening in Classic's world.

Marketing is designed to make you buy a company's product, if what they show you looks promising, you'll buy it, which is why it Sonic was popular in the early 90s, that and word of mouth. I'd still rather play Sonic 3 & Knuckles over Super Mario World, why? Because (even though I love both of them) I think Sonic 3 is an extremely fun game, that's it. (Which is funny because I grew up with SMW)

Innovations is just one factor among many to improve the quality of the final product. In the entertainment business, also digital, you need to improve and innovate because the market is unforgivable. But Sonic did something impressive, the games didn't really evolved the formula (just look at sonic mania, the 2d Sonics that succeeded all follows the same exact formula) and the series is still alive only because the marketing created a very faithful fanbase. And Sonic was always edgy, how he looked at the player with an angry face, foot-tapping, etc The complete opposite of Mario and his kid friendly/down to earth approach. Sega created Sonic to be the anti-mario, they admitted that time and time again. Tails was created to balance out the edge, etc. Sega were able to fool a considerable amount of young consumers, the same people grew up as passionate fans, the same zealots alienated other consumers, etc.. It's remarkable what sega did in general, not only sonic. You still see dreamcast fans, shenmue fans, panzer dragon fans, etc.. Very flawed products, but with a super effective marketing boosting the hype. And as you use the word of mouth as an example, marketing can also manipulate that.

SEGA is FAR too protective of their IPs. It took Sony various contractual agreements and a massive Kickstarter campaign promise to get Shenmue III out of their grasp and back into the hands of Yu Suzuki. Worst part is SEGA only permitted the use of the "Shenmue III" title. SEGA still holds the rights to Shenmue I and II (and Shenmue as a whole, beyond Shenmue III), which is why we are not going to get remakes on modern platforms. We're all stuck either emulating those games or finding them on the original consoles, which means there's a major barrier for new players. I bring this up to note how big of an asshole SEGA is with their IPs. While they gave leeway for Sonic Mania, that will definitely remain a rarity at best. You can only hope they lock an IP away, since anything they think to touch again gets rammed into the ground long past its immediate death.

My main disappointment with the game is that Sonic Mania was a very clear (and good) setup for it. We have the Phantom Ruby introduced in Sonic Mania and at the end we see Sonic get sent to the world of Sonic Forces. You'd think that plot point would be expanded upon and be far more relevant in Forces but...nope. Infinite had a lot of potential as a villain as well. All of the promotion gave him this great sense of mystery and everyone wanted to know just who or what he is. But in the end he really was just an edgelord that was just evil because...he's evil. The game just didn't live up to how it was advertised. The game even has a good start. Having Sonic be defeated at the very beginning of the game was a really good way to set the tone but then it went all down hill from there. Sonic Forces had a lot of potential but it pretty much all went to waste. I think the biggest positive I can give the game is that Knuckles is way cooler here than he has been portrayed lately. Unfortunately he never gets to really do anything but personality was I liked the direction they were taking with him. If everything were far more fleshed out this game really could have had an amazing story. When it was being advertised I even thought to myself "Even if the gameplay ends up sucking, this story has a lot of potential!" Unfortunately I just ended up feeling disappointed that it didn't utilize that potential.
