I wouldn't say going out of your way to kill countless innocent people is justified, just because others of their kind have killed a few of your own (because they're an oppressed group that wants to escape their situation) Self defense is one thing, but the genocide route goes beyond that. Undertale Yellow is about Justice, and the genocide route is a twisted perversion of that idea

We don't know which side did more harm, but humans are innately weak physically and likely were on the losing side for a good part of it. Furthermore, innocence doesnt excuse complacency. People could've done something over the senseless killing of humans but didn't because it benefited them. "We only took 5." "Only" "5." Its clear to them and to Clover that its either 2 more to forcibly let themselves out, which can potentially lead to another war, or ending it there and take retribution for the few that have perished for the goals of the monsters. But could you say the citizens under the 3rd reich were innocent? Faultless? Undeserving of the economic catastrophe that struck them afterwards? Mind you, this is only one possibility, and a fanmade-one at that. Its supposed to make you think about it beyond innocent and guilty, but its also clear that innocence wasn't valued on one side for at least 5 kids prior.

The game outright states that the Humans started the war and that it could barely be called that. No human souls were taken and monsters took heavy casualties. They were willing to remain underground with no hope of freedom. The humans were fueled by fear of what monsters were capable of. And so they nipped them in the bud. And this war was a LONG, LONG TIME ago. It's not like the war was literally a few days before Yellow. Clover barely even discovers any information on monsters. Monster souls are made of emotions, of love and compassion. But humans can be as cruel and deadly as they please without needing those elements. Their physical bodies made of water are so much more powerful that it's frankly ludicrous. These two sides are not equivalent. Humans took away hopes and dreams, imprisoned an entire race to die, murder their beloved prince, the future of monsterkind. Clover walks around looking for people to murder. Innocent families and entire communities. He might not be as bad as the Player in UT, but that's not saying much. He kills some who are deserving, but he is a misguided executioner. He doesn't achieve Justice, he only achieves judgmental revenge. It's selfish. Who gave him that right? There is nothing in yellow that contradicts this.

They wouldn't have to fear something they knew they could erase with a .44, and the story itself was the monster's side of it. Realistically, there's no way there wasn't a long standing conflict prior to the war we were told about, nor there not being any reason the humans felt they should've feared them in the first place

@@ashemabahumat4173 Even still everything else still stands. Even if there was a previous confrontation we didn't see, it doesn't change anything. All it proves is that the Humans are slightly more sympathetic in their reasoning. It doesn't change what they ultimately did in imprisoning the monsters forever. Or the fact that monsters are born with kindness in their nature. Or that a single human soul equals the entirety of the monster's souls. If there was even a remote chance to them of a monster getting a SOUL, it was treated as a certainty that they would use it against them. Like the scales are so heavily weighed against the Monsters in the Humans favor. The only reason they didn't outright slaughter them was probably because there were leaders on the Human side that suggested imprisonment.

We do not have full games yet about the other souls. There's one interesting project about blue and purple I believe. So you don't know what the rest of souls went through. But yeah, from now on in my personal view Undertale Yellow is canon. One of the pacifist endings, probably the true one because of the hat and pistol dialogue.

@@SproutedGrain I get that the pacifist route feels bad because of Clover dying but its honestly better than Clover pretty much sacrificing everything that made them a good person in the genocide route. All of their kindness and compassion vanished. They aren't going to have a great life after everything that happened to them in the underground due to the massive amount of LV they have (which basically makes you a more violent person). It just isn't worth all of that death and destruction for them to most likely not even have a good life. Majority of the monsters murdered in the genocide route have nothing to do with the original 5 humans and even if you wanna argue self defense most monsters are able to be spared once they reach about 50% hp meaning they don't need to die. Clover is shown to be able to start encounters without a monster actually wanting to fight and considering how fast word of their wrongdoings spread its safe to assume at least half of the encounters against monsters you kill in the genocide route are started unnecessarily by Clover because why would any random monster want to engage with a human like Clover. Clover also kills Asgore, kills Flowey, and takes away the human souls in the genocide route, so when Frisk ends up falling down, True pacifist isn't going to be possible as an ending making all monsters and potentially Frisk trapped for the rest of their lives (unless Frisk kills Toriel and escapes by themselves). Point is, mass murder is bad and its lowkey kinda concerning that you see genocide route as a better ending than pacifist.

Gotta say, I am really not a fan of the pacifist route this go around. I get that the ending is supposed to lead into the real undertale, but I don’t see a logical reason for clover just to choose death right then and there instead of living in the underground until either the arrival of the 7th human, or their death of natural causes, in which they can still just take the soul when that eventually happens.

I see a lot of people like genocide route more then pacifist route. But keep in mind that if genocide route was canon, that will be no longer original Undertale. It true it was pain to see that you just give the soul after doing pacifist, but genocide route feel like killing the innocent monster only to get justice from one king monster. I will stick in my mind that pacifist is canon event to lead the original Undertale.

6 children have disappeared and your only way to rescue them is to kill a bunch of monsters that ate clearly hostile, want your death and are perfectly fine with the fact that human children are being murdered. You have came with one mission, find the missing children. I think Clover's actions in genocide are indeed the most righteous ones. I'll put it another way, you must choose between killing a lot, and I mean, a lot, like, let's say 50% (even though Clover killed less) of the cat/dog/any animal you'd like that is not human population in order to save 6 children. There's only one morally correct answer and that is to save the children.
