There's nothing more vapid than the nostalgia goggles argument. When I'm playing an old ass game I've never played before and I'm loving it, that's not nostalgia. When I'm playing something new and I hate it, that's not bias. It's not "rose tinted glasses" as they call it. It's called "the old one is just fucking better."

This is a claim I've had to face many times in the last few years. For some reason it is unfathomable that entertainment, and really just life itself, was ever better than right now. Games can't possibly suck now, you're just blinded by nostalgia. It's such an absurd opinion that I find it hard to believe anyone over 20 actually believes it. Like you said, Marxist ideology plays a huge part in this nonsense but I also have to think it's kids who quite literally have never played a game before the PS3/360 era because they have "bad graphics". It's depressing in a sense because so many modern game reviewers are shills, and I'm not talking about journalists. The NPC group think is impossible to break through when every hack youtuber is giving your Soyny slop a 10/10. Zoomers seem to be incapable of understanding that you can like a game and still criticize it, or hate it and still acknowledge a few good things. But at the end of the day, it doesn't even matter that the industry still churns out a few 7s when the 10s are long gone by now. I've said it before, but "Gamers" get what they deserve. They have shown me time and time again that they have zero standards. It might be a blessing in disguise that I'm basically shadowbanned because I don't have to deal with their idiocy anymore.

@Isaccclarke69 Good to know at least someone tries the games I recommend. Sometimes I rail on zoomers a bit too much but it's really just meant to be a code word for teenagers. There's nothing inherently wrong with Baby Boomers/Gen X/Millennials/Gen Z it's just stereotypes based on broad observations about people who grew up with certain major cultural/technological developments (The Internet and Smartphones being the ones to shape Millennials and Zoomers respectively). So basically what I'm saying is I don't like arrogant teenagers who think the trash they're growing up with now is as good or better than games from 15+ years ago. There are plenty of casual/normie Millennials who think the exact same way because they didn't play video games growing up. There are also plenty of people who are nothing like these stereotypes, it just so happens that my channel has attracted the worst fanboys, activists, and Redditors who can't handle a different opinion.

The weird thing is that even the 360/PS3 had better games than we have now. I'm a zoomer myself and I definitely know. So even if zoomers only play games from that era, they should know that things used to be better. Why else would modern devs go back and "remake" games from that era, even though there is no way those games need it? Just think of the Dead Space or Demon's Souls remakes. It's horrendous. Also, hey SyntheticMan. I hope you're enjoying this channel I recommended to you a long time ago. Good to see you here.

@@beetheimmortal I think The Callisto Protocol is a more accurate example of what modern games are striving to be. Full of propaganda, mediocre acting, and lackluster gameplay. Most of us can agree that Japan on the whole does a better job with video games. But I also have to say I sorely miss what the western video game industry used to be. Doom from John Carmack and John Romero, there’s a reason why people still talk about that game. We’re not seeing another Doom, or another Deus Ex. The best we can do is simply copy it, as Doom Eternal and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided have done.
@beetheimmortal

@@KratostheThird Yeah, I see what you mean. It's a real shame about the western vidya industry. This also ties into my point about "remakes". Of course they have to remake something that's already good, if they try to make new stuff, the best they can come up with is Callisto Protocol (or, God forbid, Flopspoken). It's easier to leech off things others have already made. It's the nature of marxists. I come from an ex-soviet satellite state (Hungary), so I should know from our history.

My whole life, all I wanted was for Chrono Trigger to be remade. I was 5 when it came out. It changed my life. I don't feel that way anymore though; now I am AFRAID of it being remade. Please leave all the golden age games alone. They are perfect the way they are. Leave it all alone. Keep the present away from the past. I feel so bad for anyone who wasn't there at the time. They'll never know what they missed. Its kind of like how our generation missed the British Invasion, in terms of music media. Today, there is no creative, new, fresh media at all. Kids today just have no idea. They have been completely robbed of art for the sake of sick, twisted agendas.

For anyone who has young kids, I recommend they play Nintendo games on the Switch. Some of the classics from the NES generation onward are still available, but they’re even better if you have the original hardware. However the retro gaming market has picked up a lot of steam in recent years, so you have to pay a pretty penny for the NES and SNES consoles. No woke politics. No pride flags. No angry characters like Abby from TLOU Pt 2. No blatant in-game advertising or monetization. No DLC. Japan can still hit it out of the park. Unfortunately Capcom and Square Enix have fallen to greed, but overall Japanese made games are simply better and more polished. Modern western games simply can’t compare.

Go back and look at the release schedule of systems from the past. Several games came out each week throughout the year. Each week. Games of all types. If they did not sell, then that was it and they would make a different game. Now a game might be released every six months. And if the game does not sell well, it is not taken as a lesson. No, it is the fault of the customer base, not the developer.

You’re speaking specifically of AAA games. Indie games are still around, but the big problem is a lot of them are low budget, meaning a chunk basically amount to retro inspired 90’s era Metroidvania. AAA games cost exponentially more now, and few if any of those corporations are taking any risks. That is why so much of the industry feels stale, in contrast to a game like Doom which 30 years almost turned the industry on its head.

Here are the games that were reviewed inside: The masterpieces: Thief: The Dark Project - only Thief 2 is its equal Half-Life - need I say more? Myth 2: Soulblighter - has yet to be rivaled Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri - the best 4X ever created, full stop Starcraft: Brood War - the expansion to the best game Blizzard ever released Abe's Exoddus - only Oddysey is better when it comes to the cinematic platformer genre Not masterpieces, but still good games in their own right: Heretic 2 Carmageddon 2 Recoil Close Combat 3 Railroad Tycoon 2 Populous: The Beginning Baldur's Gate I don't know if every single one of these came out in the exact same month, but still it's incredible that so many good titles were reviewed in just one magazine issue. Gaming will never be good again.

It’s in my top 3 or 5 games of all time. Played it back in 1998 when the game released. It was and still is highly nostalgic. Childhood Link is basically a childhood experience, he explores portions of Hyrule and meets Princess Zelda. As Adult Link he discovers times have changed. He sees a happy town turn into a living nightmare as Ganondorf uses his powers of evil. But the forest didn’t really change. The kids are still the same kids, they didn’t grow up, and are afraid of the outside world due to a power/bond they are tied to. This didn’t make sense to me back in 1998 when I was a kid. Now in my late 30’s, I understand completely how the land of Hyrule was corrupted by evil, and how Link has to save it from utter destruction.

14:39 I like the way you talk about nostalgia as a building block. This is why I want to give my children a childhood that can only be described as a 90s-early 2000s bubble. To pass on all the best things I took for granted growing up, with little to no modern interference. To actually protect them in the years when they most need protection. No Netflix. No KZbin Kids. No smartphones. No algorithms. No drag queen ads. All the classic shows, movies, music and games I used to love, with the added bonus of getting to play the video game titles I never actually got to play as a kid, and doing it in the company of my children. I downloaded He-Man and the Masters of the Universe yesterday. It's one of the 80s shows I only glimpsed as a 90s kid. I never saw a full episode, but the intro is one I always remembered. You look at the ultra buff male characters and the ultra feminine female characters and it's just undeniable, the same way a sculpted statue from ancient Greece is undeniable. Looking at some of the episodes now, it strikes me just how funny and based the writing is, especially Skeletor's dialogue. It's a combination of things that does it for me: the poetic way he speaks, his voice, and him being ripped to fucking shreds. In his own words, loud and proud, he is "completely and utterly evil". No modern cartoon has me smiling like a fool the way this show does, and it's not even one I grew up with. It's just good stuff. Quality is timeless.

Back to a time when the industry made the best movies, films, TV shows, games and music! Back when California was the beautiful place I traveled to with my parents and family, not a sad spectacle with tents on every corner. Back when my dad was at a Metallica concert in Moscow and Stone Temple Pilots concert in Latrobe, and no one in the crowd was standing around with their phones like an idiot taking pictures, totally clueless about how to have fun. Damn, that was a great time! But unfortunately I was born too late to see a small period of good times in my early-to-late childhood, and get caught up in the clown world right afterward.

And that goal is, beyond world domination, the annihilation of the world. He must wear down all the rest of mankind, he persuades himself, in order to prepare a paradise on earth. He has made himself believe that only he is capable of this great task, and, considering his ideas of paradise, that is certainly so. But one sees, if only in the means which he employs, that he is secretly driven to something else. While he pretends to himself to be elevating mankind, he torments men to despair, to madness, to ruin. If a halt is not ordered, he will destroy all men. His nature compels him to that goal, even though he dimly realizes that he must thereby destroy himself. There is no other way for him; he must act thus. This realization of the unconditional dependence of his own existence upon that of his victims appears to me to be the main cause for his hatred. To be obliged to try and annihilate us with all his might, but at the same time to suspect that that must lead inevitably to his own ruin, therein it lies. If you will: the tragedy of Lucifer.”_

As cringey as they are, they're pretty mean people -- way meaner than anyone normal is to them -- and they take this hostile attitude towards the audience. Games with soul back in the day used to respect the player and their intelligence. There was no winking at the camera or some kind of meta commentary -- the games were earnest and taken seriously. I was playing chrono trigger recently and it was the first time in a while a game blew my mind with something that happened. But it made me sad that I can't even remember something new had the same effect. I left a comment on a video of some old footage from the 2000s saying that so much has changed the late 2000s now feel more like how we used to look back on the 90s and this queer replied essentially arguing that everything is still the same. imagine being one of these people who really thinks everything is normal. scary. I think Japan merely shifted to keep up with the increasingly westernized gaming market. The west on the other hand has handed the keys over to the idiots coming out of colleges who only know how to be snide and creepy. They don't have any ideas or any passion for video games but they get control of these projects and produce the cheapest, most uninspired material ever. It's really embarrassing and makes me ashamed to be apart of such a stupid culture. They make games for the kind of people who don't even play or like video games. And surprise -- no one buys them!

@@Krysnha the last time i remember it being somewhat fun to go out and look for a game was the ps3 days. it's so weird how pedestrian the game systems became after ps3. the ps3 with its multimedia functionality and all the features makes it feel more futuristic than ps4 or ps5. ps4 was a very cookie cutter kind of system you would have no use for outside of playing recent AAA games. just a pure vanilla user experience with its row of oversized tiles that are ugly. I hate the way interfaces and apps now are developed as if they are giant versions of mobile apps with their giant, waste-of-space picturesque displays and tiles. ugh. I always associate this current era with that kind of tacky look with the flat colors, it makes you want to puke. you go back and look at the ps2, ps3 or even something like dreamcast and you might think "woah" if you've forgotten how the user experience used to be. there used to be a novel approach and not everything was the same. the ps2 had an ambient homescreen with an alluring, almost mystical feel. All I ever wanted in a new playstation was something like that but with more features.

Japan is kinda interesting because a lot of the larger studios are shifting to appeal to western audience (or rather, what the western companies are pushing), while Japanese people do not like it, so these companies end up abandoning their original japanese audience. Whereas other studios end up still working to appeal to Japanese people and put out very different games. I'll let you guess which one gamers like more.

Boomer has been heavily watered down these past few years. It used to only mean the generation of people born during the Post War Era after WW2. As someone in his late 30’s I can confirm things were better 15, 20, 25 years ago. To the left, this makes me a spiritual Boomer, because frankly our situation is not looking good as Millennials and Zoomers. Us elder Millennials were truly the last to grasp the pieces of prosperity before everything went to crap. Zoomers never had a chance. They are entering our real world with the cards stacked against them. But people following the far left ideology will still call us all Boomers, when in reality it has been the Baby Boomers that have been selfish and in power that have pushed us to this mess we’re seeing today. The actual Boomers destroyed that prosperity. Blackrock is headed by a Boomer himself, who have become morally corrupt. Somehow some of the people pushing 70, 80 and even 90 years old are still in power and refuse to pass the torch.

You play old games in HD with widescreen and 60fps hacks your opinions are all invalidated. Jk Nostalgia goggles are absolutely a thing, but there's definitely merit to the idea that "things used to be better", because even though not everything used to be better, [evidenced in said 4K 16:9 60fps OOT] there are definitely things that used to be better overall. It's weird as hell to me that there are people who refuse to play or read or watch things that are "old" because they think being old makes them bad. But the age of a work doesn't determine it's quality, and I actually find it more enjoyable when I discard the context of a work during my initial exposure to it, because that context can give me a false impression. Going back to the Zelda 64 games, because of their tone, aesthetic, and stories, Ocarina and Majora both feel very 80s to me, even though Majora was released in the year 2000. Games and movies are the only thing that were "worse" in the past and that's literally JUST because of technical constraints, most of which can be easily looked past. And, as a filthy zoomer, I've actually abandoned modern gaming other than sequels I know will be good, or indie projects that look interesting to me. I've straight up regressed, 7th gen is as far as I'll go usually and I sit comfortably between 6th and 4th gen consoles. Recommend me a 2 hour untranslated Japanese Saturn game and I'm all over that shit. Show me a CG trailer for another 50 hour western action RPG with lootboxes and a high fantasy setting that for some reason despite it's setting, also lets you play as an agender character, who all the NPCs in the entire game, including the very generic looking black and white morality villain who's a stereotypical straight white male, all these characters just automatically know to refer to your agender character using theys and thems, and all with a screen at the end of the trailer touting the lamest pre-order bonuses you've ever seen even though the game won't be patched into a finished state for months after release, and I fall the fuck asleep.

OG X-COM 1 and 2 Falcon 4.0 Sacrifice Become somewhat a westaboo gamers. They don't make games like that anymore. Now? I rarely play western games anymore other than obscure indies. I especially feel CRPGs were much better than now. The video games were always terrible argument are used alot in pop music as well. People that like probably will argue pop music nowadays is better than classical music 200 years ago. Because classical music is just like the pop music of the old days, except it is not. It is the most annoying and shallow argument. Classical music were not a popular entertainment in the past. It was niche and only enjoyed by the elites. It is not the pop music of the past. PC games and western PC games was also niche. Not a popular entertainment. It can be said that the entire western games aren't as mainstream as the Japanese games after atari crush. I believe it is going mainstream making the western games go down hill.

I'm not sure how this wound up in my recommends, but as a person you'd definitely include under the limitless umbrella term "woke" (which I won't speak to in this comment as I'm already exhausted by the notion) I can assure you that yours isn't the only perspective that sees and is tired of AAA gaming trends. However, I was disappointed that despite how articulate and clearly aware you are of a lot of these issues plaguing the gaming industry of late, in the end you settle on blaming the symptoms (perceived "wokeness" etc.) rather than the actual issue here, which is the SAME issue that occurs to any new market after being perceived as profitable: big business and marketing. The reason the burgeoning gaming industry was so free to follow after ideas is not because "wokeness" hadn't hit yet, but because it was largely ignored by the outside world. Games were thought of as childish, as a phase, as a shameful addiction, etc.... and only around the 2000s did the press start figuring out how to cover the industry (it also helped that every year, more and more gamers were reaching working age and influencing attitudes towards gaming). With more attention, gaming companies grew more and more ambitious for profits and attention, and more and more business managers with no prior interest in gaming got involved to start pushing margins etc. and working out ways to produce a FORMULA for game creation, as well as new business models to take advantage of the flourishing marriage between games and online. All this was happening while game technology was advancing, and of course with better graphics and sound came demand for games that took complete advantage of them -- which means MORE staff and MORE time (though this cause and effect was inevitable). AND WITH ALL THAT TIME AND MONEY GOING IN, companies are more terrified than ever of making a misstep and wasting the investment, so they dilute whatever watered down creative concept they had to start by filtering it through hundreds and hundreds of voices all closely following trends they see on social media. So you see, even if the current trends were different, we'd still just be getting back a reflection of the same popular voices pulled from social media. The words those voices say might be different, but the games would be no more creative nor more free -- just an echo in order to guarantee the lowest possible risk. If you want to see more freedom of expression in games, you're much better off following the indie gaming scene which is far more genuine and diverse in ideas and creative concepts -- it's cheaper, too! *Additional: I don't mean to say that business and marketing are inherently bad, only that for the industry to develop this way was written in stone as soon as it started getting buzz. The same is true for everything that becomes mainstream with the possibility of profits (KZbin, Google search, and even Drag Race). (My personal views on a lot of social issues seem to be very, VERY from yours, but I thought I'd say my piece at least where modern AAA gaming is concerned.)

Your videos aren’t bad or anything and you probably won’t care or read this but I’m lowkey confused on why you’re talking so much about politics in this video when it seems like you have no clue what you’re talking about? It seems like you’re just throwing around buzzwords with no actual substance. Communism and wokeness are like some of you’re main arguments on why games are trash but fail to really critique capitalism that much if not at all. I also don’t understand how wokeness correlates to gameplay and not just maybe the story or character designs. Capitalism literally can be more to blame for why games are trash because of micro transactions and the fact capitalism promotes you to put in the lowest amount of effort for high profit.

Microtransactions have nothing to do with the actual quality of gameplay and aren't inherently bad things, for many free to play games they are likely the primary source of monetisation for the company making them and the only thing keeping the game around. The low effort for high profit argument is also neatly covered by the fact that modern games are often not made to fulfil the creative desires of a game designer but instead are either a product cynically produced to cash in on a trend or the creator's rejected manuscript awkwardly inserted into yet another uninspired third-person shooter like everything that Sony's been making for the last 5 years.
