Sable does a lot of interesting things with its open world that haven't been done before. It's a game about self-reflection

SABLE was my GOTY for 2021, I enjoyed your analysis. I will never forget taking my hoverbike outside the Ibex camp and that music hits and I just cruised along the desert listening to it and going "Yup, this is exaaaaactly what it felt like when I packed all my stuff into my car and drove away from from my parent's house to leave the state."

Modding a game to get a couple of fantastic camera shots for a 12 minute video essay is such an astounding bit of work, but it paid off!

Sable is fascinating and I think it really succeeds in its strange finality. For some reason I looked at it again on my Steam library after having finished it, and saw that they had added fishing and a new mask around it. But as much as I genuinely like a lot of fishing in games, and loved the game, I didnt want to go back in. My Sable's journey is over, and I dont feel a need to go "oh wait let me have another go around, just incase I dont want her to be a machinist"

A year and a half ago, I broke my finger. It was (and still is) the only major long lasting injury I ever sustained apart from occasionally breaking my nose and spraining my leg as a child. I was in a splint and a cast for half a year. About 2 days Into my recovery after a surgery i did to fix it, I came across Sable while looking for a game I could play in my current condition. I ended up playing a good chunk Sable with only my right hand on my controller. After a long time of playing the game and just experiencing the in game world, my finger eventually fully healed and albeit permanently crooked, It was working again. Just wanted to share my experience of this game with you.

I bought this game 3 days ago and I just 100% it on my first play through. I just didn’t want my time to end. Wonderful game and your analysis gives me something to ponder over it all. Thank you!

This is exactly what I loved so much about Sable. It turned every small moment into something meaningful. Instead of asking "Can you save the world?" Or "Will you survive?", it asks "Who will you become?". Even the Chum Eggs effected that for me. I got every single one, and by the end of the game I decided that the only true mask for Sable was the Chum mask, because that is what she devoted herself to in her journey. Such a beautiful game. Thanks for making this lovely video.

Loved that this popped up into my recommended and agree entirely with your assessment. It's a perfect example of a game about your experience with it--and in doing so it leaves no motivation to replay it to 100%--there's no reason to get all the chum eggs, the game isn't about that. It's a reflection of our own journeys in life. It was GOTY for me.

I just discovered your channel and I absolutely adored Sable, so I'm very excited about this video! Edit: yes it was a great video. It actually got me feeling like I wanted to play again, but like you say once you've explored the themes and resolved the internal conflict, that's pretty much it. And so now, weirdly, my memories of the game have a similar feeling of melancholic happiness as old relationships and hanging out with friends in high school, a feeling of, "You can never go home." Maybe there's some irony there, given that you literally return home at the end of the game.

I loved Sable because the game was not only about the journey, but knowing when to end it. I think small moments of realization like that have an understated beauty that this captured perfectly.

Great video! I just finished sable and was surprised by how much I got from it. My life/job is extremely stressful at the moment and I'm about to start a 'new chapter'. The whole.... experience spoke to me on a level I can't really quite enunciate. Subscribed :)

i just finished my first playthrough and what an amazing game. I didn't do everything, but I did everything i wanted to do. I ended up choosing the atomic/whale mask because in my time exploring the world i, or rather sable, became very connected with the past and I wanted to represent my ancestors wherever I went. I like how the mask you choose or identify most with can sort of add a bit of narrative to your journey.

I wanted to like Sable but it literally does not run on my xbox (series x). I've tried playing it. The graphics glitches are insane and impossible to ignore. The frame rate is like a slideshow but also weirdly inconsistent. Maybe it's fixed by now, I do not know. On launch on game pass, it was unplayable.

I think Sable and The Pathless are both opposing examples of how an open world game can be improved by choosing a focus. Both make use of having the bulk of content optional, you don't have to do every thing, just a certain amount of things. But both redefine the context of the game and trim the fat for the concepts that don't match their focus. The Pathless IS the game about saving the world, and nothing you do in it is unteatherd to that goal. For that end, despite containing multiple open maps, your goals are actually fairly linear, its not afraid to give an over arching series of events and escalating difficulty. And for Sable its about the odds and the ends, every action in the game is simply for the sake of doing it, and ironically for me, that means doing all of it. I don't typically like following channels or personalities that have this lens of... well being burned out on games, because I'm certainly not. I do however love breaking down the concepts and themes of the game, and I believe that games have merit and meaning outside of the playspace, that regardless if I vehemently enjoyed a game, or something fell flat for me, I can find the things to appreciate, or nitpick the potential issues, for a better understanding and respect for the product, and for that reason, it takes a lot for me to feel truly dissatisfied with an experience and I for better or worse feel compelled to defend the positive angles of commonly derided games or tropes. That being said, your channel and analysis is impeccable and I want to see more, regardless of how heavy your critique may be at times of the actual medium of gaming and how unsuccessful it seems to be at its core tenants of immersion, challenge, and expression, you got my sub.

I stumbled across Sable this month when my mom had to undergo surgery and all there was to do for me was waiting. I was completely obsessed with discovering this world. Now i am prolonging the mask decision, i don't want the game to end!

The bit about it being entirely a game of side quests actually reminded me of a thing I enjoyed in the Witcher 3 (which was in conflict w/ the main Witcher story): Knowing that a witcher's job was just to help people, to take contracts and kill monsters that were hurting folk and rescue people etc, as much as I was into Ciri and their dynamic and wanted to forward that plot, A relief of the second time I played tw3 Was the ability, now that I knew that there wasn't really a time limit on the whole Ciri plotline, The ability to just play as a Witcher. Just pretend that it was a normal year on the path being a Witcher, and treat the side quests and things that cropped up as normal features of that. I know there've been some discussions about potential future Witcher titles, and again as much as I love Geralt, one thing that I would hope for from a future installment was a return to that feel, a feel not unlike parts of death stranding as well, that this is just someone's life. This is just what their job is in the world. Life doesn't have you know bosses and end games the same way that most video games do... And sometimes it's really nice to just be able to lose yourself in a game that is playing a different unusual job and life. And especially when you can tell that it's done with a lot of love, that the world that the quests that the characters are built with a lot of care and attention and love, that's really nice to sink into. And I don't necessarily need to be saving the world at the end.

I ran into this game's vinyl in a record store with some friends. Them knowing I'm the obscure indie games guy they asked if I knew it. I described it as "breath of the wild but the mechanics of the good part, the exploration, are the point of the game instead of trying to be a zelda game as well.
