Videoing Venus with a Nikon P1000 - A step by step guide

In this tutorial, I demonstrate how I setup my equipment and configure my camera to capture focused and correctly exposed video footage of Venus with a Nikon P1000
Recorded on April 15, 2020 in the UK with a Pixel 4 XL and Nikon P1000

Hello can you please help me: why in Movie mode I have only 3.6 digital Zoom and not 4 ??

I believe it's limited to 3.6x in 4K mode. See the specifications here... imaging.nikon.com/lineup/coolpix/p/p1000/spec.htm

Nice tutorial! I've been trying to get clear shots of Venus for the past couple weeks. I managed to get it nice and clear using a ND400 filter the other night and was blown away by how sharp the crescent shape was. Thanks for the tutorial, I've subbed to the channel in hope to learn more. Cheers.

Nice Video, thanks for making it. You got a fair bit of vibration despite the tripod/tracker being sound. I suspect the lens needs better support. The tripod socket looks to be too far back to counter full lens extension. Even a light breeze will cause movement. Which HDMI lead did you use to connect to the laptop? I guess you have "HDMI in" on the laptop and I understand that the P1000 has HDMI out, I guess an adaptor is required. I wont have access to a P1000 until next week, need to wait to familiarise myself with the camera.

Yeah, I do need to get some kind of bracket for the lens. There's no "official" solution, but other people have found brackets that fit. To connect via HDMI, you need either a micro-hdmi adaptor and a standard cable, or a hdmi cable with a micro plug on one end.

@@MovieVertigo Understood Thanks. I have a Kirk bracket made for my old Nikon 80-200 2.8, which I suspect will work for P1000. I will be able to check it after this weekend, so I will let you know.

Could someone tell me what kind of tripod and tripod head he is using? I would like to buy a sturdy and stable tripod and a precision adjusting head for it. Not sure where to go for advice. I tried to talk with a local camera shop about this topic. They don't seem to be interested.

I can't remember the *exact* model, but it's a Manfrotto tripod with a Manfrotto fluid video head.

Ws the camera plugged into a power let? (there's a plug symbol next to ISO)

The camera is connected to a USB power pack using a dummy battery adaptor. Because the adaptor doesn't report itself as a proper battery to the camera, the camera shows the plug symbol.

Can you connect Nikon p1000 to a tablet and use it as a monitor?

You can use anything that accepts an HDMI input. In the video I used a Surface tablet (which is running Windows 10) and a USB capture card (The red and black box you can see at 4:49).

i think you can make it more sharp by stacking the photos and also using gigapixel like software to increase the pixels

@@shutterclick-6922 A tracker isn't absolutely necessary, but it does mean you don't have to keep adjusting the camera to keep Venus in frame.

@@TheAviationistKhizr Ah, I see where the confusion is now! Yes there is a 2XL in the video, but I was filming with a 4XL. I used my old 2XL to control the tracker so that I could film with my 4XL. Also, I hadn't realised they'd ported "night sight" to older phones. I thought it was a Pixel 4 only thing. Sorry for the misunderstanding!
