Looong time listener and first time caller, here. I have to say that this interview was a joy to watch. Time and again, I had goosebumps and the pure joy felt by Vinod & Baradwaj was clearly evident. BR's eye for picking up small details in the movies that he reviews is uncanny and was in full effect. In some ways, BR was as much of a perfectionist as Vinod is. :) For an "arrogant" filmmaker from Kashmir, Vinod is inspiring in how someone should live their life, especially their late life. Thanks for doing this interview and giving us a dose of inspiration amindst the winter doldrums of January in New York, where I am.

I just came back from the theatre watching this movie. I watched the interview before watching the movie and now after watching it as well. The interview is not promoting the movie or exaggerating the movie but they just speaking real things about the movie. Best Movie from bolly after a decade. You can place this movie on the same level as Swades, Rang De Basanti and Taare Zameen Par. If the panelists are real then this movie will be winning awards in every section like acting, dialogue and technical sides like sound design, editing, art etc.! Due to less BGM you can even hear sounds from the nearby screens.

Loved to hear Baradwaj sir ask about the background score. Throughout the movie I noticed how understated the score was in an almost old fashioned way! I am a firm believer that background score has a huge role in the success of a movie and its importance is never understood! I have at several times watched movies that were failures at the box office and noticed how off the bg score was and how a better score would have elevated the scene… Loved the interview!

Maybe he doesnt, because nobody gets as precise. I mean look at Animal's reviews. People are bashing it because the male lead is toxic.(which is laughable because the movie was about a toxic man! Its like saying why DDLJ is having romance in it) Instead, Animal should be bashed because the storytelling isnt good. Its a completely diff thing.

I watched the film last night, and while I may not term it my favorite or say I unabashedly loved the film, I so enjoyed the intention behind the film. You could see it. Throughout. The film is about aspiration and determination, which when concocted in equal measures can result in heart pleasing success. Those some virtues, that ethos, is reflected in this interview. Again, I am not going to suddenly place Mr. Vidhu Vinod Chopra as 'The Best' out there or claim that I have seen all his films, but of the few I have, his love for the craft of storytelling is endearing. He makes memorable movies with love and without compromise. It takes aspiration and determination. That's why when Baddy says the film felt 'pure' I agree with him. It feels purely Indian. We are excessive people, we enjoy heightened drama and expression. You see how the parents and the grandmother emotes and reacts, its us. We exaggerate things and our emotions, our struggles (in general) are far from stoic. The film captures that so very well. It doesn't indulge in the excesses of the emotions present, it just hits the right notes. Others may use the term 'organic' but that seems like we're qualitatively describing a vegetable from Puro Fresh market. I think pure really is the word. The distinguishing factor between an underdog film and a film about aspiration, for me, is that the underdog film is only about the triumph and a film like this is about the beginning of many more triumphs to come. I choose to believe that Manoj Kumar will remain true to his inner voice till he drops dead. That is great to feel and watch. It inspires you to stay true to who you are. Thank you Mr. VVC. BR so correctly points out the chapped lips, the handheld, the rotatory movement and then the push in, the use of the music, all used so very well. One thing both of them, I felt didn't talk (enough) about was the editing. The film breaks its editing style in the final 'confrontation'. I say confrontation because Manoj is now coming face to face with the system, with those who can keep him at bay -- in short -- his fears (for lack of a better word). The editing there is drastically different. The slow reveals, the sustained two shots, the objectiveness is all gone. We are no more a fly on the wall. We go in between Manoj and the Chairman. We get jump cuts mid dialogue to create a fast tempo. We get Vaadh - Vivadh. This done to make you feel a sense of urgency and rush, that perhaps Manoj was feeling too at that point (at the restart of the interview) because albeit he has learnt things won't change and he has a life partner waiting out there for him, it still takes courage to face up to 5 esteemed panelists. And a similar kind of tension is felt by the opposing party (Chairman) whose authority and belief system is being shook. That for me, worked very well. It was a courageous move, wherein a filmmaker was ready to expose the seams of his craft to pin point his agenda. Never sell yourself short, immaterial of strong the opposition is. Going by the interview, and trusting Mr.VVC, that's perhaps what he felt when he was offered 10 lakh rupees to alter Parinda's ending. A great film for film aspirants as well. Loads to learn. Loads to dissect. Lovely to see the subject matter and craft aligning so well.
