How to tap down a dent | Knocking down high spot | Tap down tutorial

Tap down a dent or knocking down a high spot is another very important thing when it comes to learning PDR.
In this tap down tutorial I will show you how you can learn taping down all this high spots. This is another one of my beginner PDR series about PDR learning.

tap down is a critical skill, i learned since my first few repairs i actually had a few little spots i puushed up, cant be scared to tap down after :) just create little dents basically but push back out after.

Thanks so much for all the information and skills that you share! With small creases it looks to me like your knocking these down on each side at the the top and bottom of the crease to remove the straight lines and make the dent round. Straight lines lock in pressure where a uniform dent can be compressed while lifted up. Am I on the right path?

Hi!! If you have a high spot and a sharp one, you can knock it down and at the same time press and hold it from the inside with a plastic ball !!! The result is easier! Good video!!! PDR is art!!

Extremely cool I have a 2019 ford ranger and I put a dent in the back door with my shoulder trying to rock the truck because my door was stuck on a cabinet in my garage so now I’m going to try to fix it myself after watching your video you know they just don’t put the metal in these cars like they used to

Yes metal is much thiner these days then it used to be. However I must warn you that fixing dents is much harder then it looks so be careful as you can make it worse and harder for someone to repair it later

When you are tapping, it would really help us beginners if we could see how hard you are hitting the tool, to get some feel for how gentle, or hard, one should be....so far in the video (tapping down the sharp little bumps), I haven't seen the method of opening up a dent, to make it better to glue pull...

Thomas Pongrac blending hammer comes in to play on rails and occasionally on other side panels. I never use it on top panels

If you had perfect access to a dent from the back of the panel or from inside the car, would you tap it down from the inside or still massage it out with a rod?

I would push it (massage it) with a rod. Some people do tap it out from inside the car. Most commonly is this technique used by Brazilians.

I am using dead on dent tool tips. A hammer is something light, nothing special. A paddle would do just fine! I change tips because different size gives different result.

I bought a PDR kit years ago. I tried pushing out a dent but it wouldn't move one bit. After that I got kind of deflated. I never intended to make it a career but just wanted to accomplish it for my own satisfaction. I do still watch a lot of PDR videos on youtube just for the enjoyment but this video is the only one I've seen where you get close up detail of what is going on. Credit to you for that. Maybe I'll go back when the weather is better and try again. Subscribed.

Started 6 months ago with a 4 day of pdr training, using only the white knock down with the magnet at the moment. Ordered a ATP knock down hammer to try. I like your video's man hope one day i become also good pdr guy. Ps: how do you ''clean'' the tip of the knock down? mine is making scratchs

You will get there! It took me 1 year to be able to fix a car...acceptable quality and slow pace. Having a 1 on 1 training can greatly speed you up. You can clean the tip by using some sanding paper like 1500 and then 3000 and buffing it afterwards.

I tried this on the exact same kind of dents at 3:47, not sure why but could not get the dent back down. Middle of sliding door. After over an hour, the dent was still raised, but the entire area sunk low still with the dent in the middle. 2006 Dodge Caravan. Maybe the New reinforced Steel I've heard of?

Last week my van was hit with hail and the insurance paid me a lot of money to get it fixed, so instead I bought a few pdr kits and working on the dents myself and already got paid to take my time and learn how to make these dents go away. This video really helped. I have used hot glue tabs to get the major dent out and now I have a smaller but still noticeable indent and I am going to try to knock down the crown around the edges and see if that takes the tension off the metal

Hi. No I preheat only on really sharp dents. If you have a more valuable car I wouldn’t recommend doing it by yourself...if you want to learn the trade then get some of the tools that are worth your money and start practicing on scrap metal panels 👍

I mean if you just want to try to save your money then don’t :) you will end up messing it up and spending more at the end. It’s much harder then it looks :) If you want to actually learn to do PDR then I suggest getting a scrap panel :) save your doors for later :)

What happens if you tapped too hard and put tiny dimples in the metal? Not on a car, did glue pull/tap down on Stainless steel instapot dent

In that case you have to either push it or glue pull it again. However, since the dimples you made are so tiny they will be super hard to glue pull. You would need to open the dimples up and make them bigger more shallow dents in order to glue pull them, but the best option is to push them back out with a rod

Have you made any videos of the theory of where to hit the dent to pull it out? I am not 100 percent sure where to hit the high spots and where to push on the dent. What do you do different with a sharp dent? Can you define sharp dent?

No I haven't made any of those videos yet. A sharp dent you must hit the center first while on a soft dent it's not a must to hit it.

Good luck on learning PDR. You need to start cross checking to get rid of those little creases. They are normal, you just need to get rid of them
