Hey Shane! What I believe we're going to see as we move forward is that all new vehicles will require a constant data connection in order for the vehicles systems to properly function. I worked for Verizon Wireless during the transition into the smartphone era, and where we are with the automotive space feels very similar. I remember when I used to offer data plans to people and they laughed, telling me they didn't need it. Plans were confusing, and systems were somewhat messy. Now everyone has a phone with a data connection. Almost nobody would consider not having it. Right now our cell phones are able to fill the gap for the most part, I agree...however....Apple is spending a TON of money into enhancing their CarPlay system, and rumor is the new system will end up subscription based in order for Apple to add an additional stream of income. If that is in fact the case, I believe Google (android) will follow suit. At that point it will all come down to whose system you want to subscribe to, and which one you personally prefer. Now I could certainly be wrong, but with all the information I have available to me right now that is where I see things going. TO equalize everything, I only negotiate on "out the door" where if the dealer wants to shoot themselves in the foot with all sorts of excess and imaginetive fees...go for it. Will be interesting as I negotiate between a Silverado without the the mandatory option and Sierra with it as they work from a $1500 self imposed handicap. The other problem with the approach that wasn't addressed is 3 years from now as a trade-in on a new vehicle. That $1500 becomes a liability for the consumer. Trade-in value is based on some reference, like Black Book, that uses as its base MSRP, then adds in key options. By not including "mandatory option" originally in MSRP, the base cost is artificially low, and becomes a liability as the expired option has no value. Worse, the used buyer will have additional monthly costs to continue the OnStar and the functionality of features within the truck.

I just picked up my GMC Denali last Tuesday. My biggest frustration was not the price increase for Onstar, but for the delays in taking delivery of the truck! It was originally scheduled to be built in May, it was finally built in late July and delivered last week! I was already an Onstar subscriber in my 2018 Denali , paying monthly. As far as changing brands, that’s not happening I have been a serious GMC fan since 1953! One major reason I purchased this year is I will never purchase an electric vehicle and I am concerned about serious electric vehicle talk out of all manufacturers!
@BrianMello2 жыл бұрын
William, I couldn't agree more when it comes to the build times and delivery dates! It has been a complete mess, even at the dealer level we are often times left in the dark by the manufacture. It's crazy, and it's something that needs to changed sooner than later. Oh, and before I forget, congrats on the new Denali you must be pumped! As for the move to electric, who knows what's going to happen. I know for me as an enthusiast I'll always own at least 1 ICE vehicle, because who doesn't love the sound of a screaming V8! EV's I really hated until I drove one. They are insanely fast, the throttle response is out of this world, and the low center of gravity makes then handle incredibly well....BUT, we've got a long way to go before they can fully replace ICE. Thanks for watching, and good luck with the new truck!

FYI I bought a 2019 Chevy Silverado in 2019 and they forced me to spend $1495 on sky Force technology I was not happy with that and as for the phone app I could really care less that's what the remote is for. So on top of the 1495 that I paid up front I was also paying $50 a month for OnStar and $30 a month for the Wi-Fi. So I had OnStar for 3 years never used it once. Cancelled the Wi-Fi a few months after I bought the truck, never saw the purpose in it. I have a Garmin GPS and a cell phone so I didn't need directions from OnStar. So I was pretty pissed about that I'm not going to spend a 600 bucks a year to renew the service so last month I canceled it all together and would you know my Chevy app no longer works and it says the app was free until 2029 so that pisses me off too.. When I saw the 1495 on purchase contract at the dealer I said I don't want it, they said you have no choice it's included. And Brian let's not forget about the lifter failures that these trucks have had, my passenger side lifters went out at 500 miles and that totally f****** pisses me off. So pretty much I was also forced to go back and buy the extended warranty because of the potential lifter failure in the near future that could happen on the driver side or re-happen on the passenger side. So I paid I think 3,200 for they extended warranty $1,500 for skyforce that I was forced to pay and for over the past 3 years I spent $1,800 for OnStar so that is $6,500. that's ridiculous. I love my truck but it will probably be the last Chevy that I buy if they pull this crap on the next one.

LOL! I was driving with my friend in his Tundra yesterday, and I asked if his map on the screen was always on, or if it was his phone. He said it's always on. He also doesn't pay a monthly subscription either. I told him that when I bought my 2021 Silverado, they set up Onstar, and the first 3 months of the subscription were free, then it would cost like $15/month. The subscription didn't automatically end, and they charged me twice for a service that I had declined when I bought the truck. Chevy wouldn't help me at all with the issue, and I had to deal directly with Onstar. It was like pulling teeth trying to get them to stop the services, and multiple times I explained to them that I had declined the service when I bought the truck. They even said that they would go back through all of my calls with them when I purchased the truck to prove that I had ordered the service. I told them that I NEVER wanted Onstar, and that I would just report them for fraud. At that point, they decided that it would be best to stop messing with me, and they canceled my service. Onstar is a joke. I love my truck, but I would NEVER buy another one from them if I am forced to buy Onstar.

I worked in the mobile phone space when internet and data plans started becoming a thing and this feels very similar. Everyone said they don't need a data plan...until sooner or later everyone wanted one, and then eventually everyone needed one. New vehicles are becoming giant computers essentially, and a computer without data is sort of useless. I know I'm just along for the ride as the industry evolves, so I'm trying to be optimistic. @BrianMello2 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with the bad renewal rate, but I think we're entering a different era where having a built in data connection will become more important for people. Just for example, I spoke to a woman who had Onstar and had no idea she had built in wifi so her kids could connect their ipads in the backseat. Apparently whoever set her up never even told her about the service...smh. I see it more as in vehicle data than anything else. At one time everyone thought a data plan for their phone was unnecessary, this reads very similar to me. We'll see what happens, technology is moving crazy fast.

You can add a hot spot to your cell plan for $10, why would I want to be forced to pay 4x that to have one that only works in my truck? And if they’re going to make options you paid for unavailable without onstar, gm can pound sand.

The problem is... people will continue to buy them as prices go higher because, in the case of these overpriced trucks.... they're not buying them to use as trucks. They're buying them as a status symbol, to be seen by others. They really don't care about $1500 more. That's why prices will keep increasing. Toys for most while the people who actually use them for truck purposes.... suffer.

I did not pay nor agreed to continue the subscription for onstar. Good for one month, if you sign up for 1 year they give one more additional month free. So when does this start exactly is my question. Believe me when I say onstar should be free for as long as you own the truck when you pay 75000 for a half ton. Do I like the truck Hell Yes.

It's ridiculous, honestly. I LIKE the refreshed trucks, and all of the technology that they have available. But if this is what progress means, then start making the 800s again. Those are probably the best trucks they ever made. That was the end of the era of integrity, and now we're in an era where corporate profits rule the roost. Not oily with GM, but with their suppliers as well.

@@BrianMello you might be right but I think a lot of people are sick of big companies sucking them dry with subscription based services. I’ve seen my competitors try moving to this model the past years and it’s not accepted and dies off. There is no stream of data in a car that a phone won’t provide. For instance, I work out of my truck and I’m on my phone and laptop constantly. Why would I ever pay to have Wi-Fi on my truck? My phone already has it and I tether through it. I’ll bet the acceptance rate of this paid subscription is extremely low and it’s been available for a long time already.

I'm really confused because I was paying $50 a month for OnStar I get a renewal for my OnStar but then on my contract it says skyforce technology $1,500 I'd imagine that it's that sky Force technology that maybe they renamed and that's what I have to pay for.
