Balumahendra made uncompromising raw and realistic films. Both Bala and Vetrimaaran are his disciples and Balumahendra’s influence is heavyset on both these directors. Both the disciples haven’t swayed till date and carved an unique raw, cruel, brutal genre for themselves albeit an unpalatable one for a larger part of the audience, which contributes to the reason why one of the top directors that India has ever produced arent as well known as they should have been. Vetrimaaran directorial debut was in 2007 with Dhanush Polladhavan, the movie was remade in Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, Bengali and Sinhalese. Viduthalai is his 6th movie as a director in his 16th year. Four years later in 2011 came his second movie, Aadukalam which was again with Dhanush, the movie raked 6 National Awards including Best Screenplay and Director. Another 4 years later came his third movie Visaranai, which bagged 3 National Awards including Best Feature Film in Tamil. He joined hands again with Dhanush for his 4th film in Vada Chennai which was released in 2018, the movie will be a cult classic in years to come and is rated 8.4 on IMDB. His 5th film was released one year later in 2019, again with Dhanush. Asuran won two national awards including Best Feature Film in Tamil. Dhanush won both National Awards for Best Actor for Aadukalam and Asuran. Viduthalai is a 2 part movie and Vetrimaaran takes his time to set the plot. Soori, an accomplished comedian in the Tamil film industry makes his debut in a lead role and is an incredible casting choice for the role. Set in 1987 in a fictional town, the plot is based on Jeyamohan’s short story Thunaivan. The narration is fresh, raw and aptly supported by Velraj’s cinematography and IRs BGM, both the full songs are soothing melodies from the 80 year old maestro and apt to the situation. This is Vetrimaaran’s first collaboration with his mentor’s one and only favourite music director. Buzzing insect noises form a part of the BGM giving you a feel that you are actually there at the mountainous forest surrounded village. Vijay Sethupathi sizzles and scorches the screen with his brief screen time. Bhavani Sre delivers an award winning performance. GV Menon is his usual clinical self as a top cop. There are several new comers in the film who all give a seasoned performance. Vidathu Karuppu Chetan as the cruel cop stood out tall. Stand out casting choice was Rajeev Menon as the collector, the characterisation was so real that Rajeev could actually walk into any collector office and do the job without the IAS 😀. If you watch movies for entertainment only, this is not the movie for you like Visaranai or Jai Bhim. The police station scenes are brutal and raw unlike any movies that you would have seen. It even makes Schindlers list concentration camp scenes palatable when compared against this. Once in a life time role for Soori and he has given his 200%. Vetrimaaran’s direction prowess can be seen throughout the movie, spectacular location choice and art work supported by solid actor’s performance, editing, cinematography and music makes this a grand teamwork. Today music production style has massively changed.. Even today Ilayaraja's supervisor is Puru who is also outdated.. The last director who really extracted the best of Ilayaraja is Gautham menon.. NEP film music and songs are just out of the world..

‘விடுதலை’ - விமர்சனம் “””””””””””””””””””””” இந்த ஆண்டின் பிறமொழிப் படத்துக்கான ஆஸ்கர் அவார்டை ‘விடுதலை’ பெறும் என்று நான் திடமாக நம்புகிறேன். The Battle of Algiers போல, Omar Mukhtar போல The Pianist போல தமிழில் இருந்து ஓர் உலகத்தரமான சினிமாவை கொடுத்து இருக்கிறார், வெற்றிமாறன். நான் அவருடைய நண்பர் என்று சொல்லிக் கொள்வதில் மீண்டும் ஒரு பெருமிதத் தருணத்தை எனக்கு அவர் கொடுத்து இருக்கிறார். பச்சை பசேலென ஒரு பாமரக் காதலை காட்டுகிறார் பாருங்கள்… அதுதான் வெற்றிமாறன்; அதுதான் காதலின் அழகியல்! நடிகர்களை அல்ல கதையை நடிக்க வைக்க முடியும் என்பதை மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை நிரூபித்து இருக்கிறார், வெற்றிமாறன்! கடவுள் உருவாக்கியதாகச் சொல்லப்படும் மனிதன், அந்தக் கடவுளின் துணை இல்லாமல் தானே இயங்குவதைப் போல, வெற்றிமாறனிடம் இருந்து உதிர்ந்த கரு ஒன்று, அவருடைய துணை இல்லாமல், தானே இயங்கும் உயிரித் தன்மையைப் பெற்று விளங்குகிறது ‘விடுதலை’! மண்ணையும் மனிதனையும் ஒருசேர இயக்கும் காலத்தையும் படம் பிடித்துக் காட்டி இருக்கிறார்! ஓரு சம்பவம், ஒரு சமூகம், ஓர் உலகம், ஒரு காலகட்டம் இவை நெஞ்சை நெகிழ வைக்கும் பதைபதைப்புடன் சொல்லப்படுகின்றன! இளையராஜா! என்னை மன்னித்து விடுங்கள் நண்பர்களே! தியேட்டருகுப் போகும்வரை இளையராஜாவின் பாடல் இசையில் பழுது சொல்லிக் கொண்டே இருந்தேன். ஆனால் பாருங்கள் மாயத்தை, சூரி வாங்கிக் கொடுத்த வலையல்களை பவானிஸ்ரீ கையில் எடுக்கும்போது ஒலிக்கத் தொடங்குகிறது பாருங்கள் அந்த இசை…..ச்சொச்சொச்சோ…. அட்டகாச உணர்வலைகளை மீட்டிப்போடுகிறார் இளையராஜா…. வழி நெடுக காட்டுமல்லி யாருமத பாக்கலியே… உண்மையாகச் சொன்னால், படத்தின் வேகத்துக்கு அந்தப் பாடல் ஒரு தடையாகத்தான் இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும். ஆனால், இளையராஜாவோ அந்த இடத்தை நாம் கேட்டுக் களிக்கவும், பார்த்து கிரங்கவுமான ஓர் இலக்கியச் சோலையாக்கிக் கொடுத்து விடுகிறார். சினிமாவுக்கு வெளியே நாம் கேட்பது போல அல்ல அந்தப் பாடல். அங்கு அது வேறு ஒரு அழகியலுடன் ஒலிக்கிறது. அந்தப் பாடல் மட்டும் அல்ல, சூரியும், பவானிஸ்ரீயும் காட்டுப் பாதைக்குள் நடக்கத் தொடங்கும்போது ஒரு பாடல். பவானிஸ்ரீயின் பாதத்துக்கு ஒரு குளோசப் வைப்பார் வெற்றிமாறன். அந்த குளோசப்பின் மீது அந்த பாடல் இசை துவங்கும். குதூகலம் என்றால் அதுதான் குதூகலம். அப்படி ஓர் இசைச் சுகம் அது! தியேட்டரே அதிர்கிறது! பின்னிவிட்டார் இளையராஜா! பின்னணி இசையில் இளையராஜா பிழிந்து கொடுக்கும் உணர்ச்சிக் கோவைகள் காட்சியின் வீரியத்தை நமக்குள் கடத்தி விடுகிறது. இந்தப் படத்துக்குள் ஏன் இளையராஜாவை கொண்டு வந்தார் வெற்றிமாறன் என்பது படம் பார்க்கும்போது புரியும்! கேமிராவுக்கு முன்னால் சினிமாவுக்கான பாவனைகள் வேண்டாம்; சுயமான உணர்ச்சிகள் மட்டுமே வேண்டும் என்று திட்டமிட்டு இயங்கி இருக்கிறார், வெற்றிமாறன். அது இந்தப் படத்துக்கு ஓர் உயர்ந்த தரத்தைக் கொடுத்து இருக்கிறது. சினிமா கலப்படமற்ற அசல் உணர்வுகள்; அசல் அசைவுகள், அசல் பார்வைகள், அசல் அச்சம், அசல் கோபம், அசல் தன்னடக்கம், அசல் சுயமரியாதை, அசல் நேர்மை, அசல் காதல்! இவை எல்லாமே பார்வையாளனுக்கு புதிதாகத் தெரிகிறன்றன! கதை புதிது, களம் புதிது, சம்பவம் புதிது, கேரக்டர்ஸ் புதிது, கேரக்டர்களுடைய நகர்வுகள் புதிது எமோஷன்ஸ் புதிது, ரியாக்ஷன்ஸ் புதிது இவைகளால் இந்த சினிமாவே புதிது! Prasanth what you said about music is cent percent correct. The background score for the entire last 20 minutes is deadly terrific. I believe it must be recorded with a Symphony Orchestra. It was really stunning. Some of the Dravidian stock medias are purposefully spreading negative news about the BGM including Tamil Takies Maran who purposefully omitted to mention about music in his review.
