Vienna Game Stanley Variation (3.Bc4): Ideas, Principles and Common Variations

The Vienna Game is an attacking opening, and playing an early Bc4 is one of the most straightforward attacking patterns you can go for. Instead fo developing the king's knight and castling early, white is putting pressure on f7 and aiming to play f4 early if allowed.

12:07 in the Frankenstein-Dracula variation there is also a line with black playing 5...Nc6. White follows up with 6.Nb5

The Frankenstein Dracula received its name by IM Tim Harding, who wrote booklets on the Vienna and the Bishop's Opening 50 years ago. He imagined that a game by these two characters would go 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nf6 3.Nc3 Nxe4 4.Qh5 Nd6 5.Bb3 Nc6 6.Nb5. Alas neither 5...Be7 6.Nf3 Nc6 nor 5 Qxe5+ is sharp at all.

the spiellmann attack doesnt usually scares me i'd rather move Nc3 already and if they dares to take the pawn i'll capture with the king, however there are times that i bring my queen to e2 to prevent such

Interesting way to meet the Pin Variation 4...Bb4. I'd like to mention that 4...Bc5 5.f4 d6 6.Nf3 transposes to the King's Gambit Declined (2...Bc5 3.Nf3 d6 etc.). This was a favourite of GM Rudolf Spielmann. This variation interests me because of 2...Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d3 as I don't like 3.f4 very much. My compliments for your realistic approach - I've become annoyed by all the "Win in 6 moves" nonsense.

9:26 I think you missed a crazy option white has: 4. Nf3. White is now playing a reversed Stafford Gambit up a tempo.

The Spielmann variation was just played on Wei Yi vs Warmerdam and they entered the crazy line but Max didn’t find Ba3

That crazy line of the Spielman attack just got played in the tata steel tournament, but black couldn't find Ba3 neither 😂

23:54 9. c3 is also a fine move in this position, preventing the knight from coming to d4. It can also lead to a very nice queen sac line with 9. c3 O-O 10. O-O exf4 11. Bxf4 Nh5 12. Be3 Ne5 13. Nxe5! Bxd1 with advantage for white. Really rare line unfortunately - I've played 3. Bc4 Vienna for a couple of years and never had a chance to play this line in a game.

Black also has 1 e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.d3 c6 5.f4 d5 6.exd5 O-O !? This is a kind of Göring Gambit with colours reversed - White's extra move f4 helps Black. So I'd combine 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 with 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.Bc4. This means I'm looking forward to your next video 😊.
