I have seen the side steps being used in high level competitions. They are just like the samba steps. Are they an accepted step in comps? Your partner was trying to restrain her smile during the presentation! thank you again for this demonstration.

Peter thanks for comments and question. Side Whisk is not alowed in Basic Syllabus of Viennese Waltz. Although I think it's esiest way to dance on social level. After that one can learn also Reverse Turn and dance regular Viennese Waltz Syllabus Routine with Natural Turn, Reverse Turn and Change Steps.

mathman0, thanks for your question. Offset position of one partner in relation to other (right front to right front) you can control by correct arm position, especially Man's right arn. Contact in hips is secured by partner who is moving forward, because forward movement for humans are stronger than backward. Hope it helps.

Buy some velcro and attach it to two belts. You wear one and your partner the other. Then velcro your self together when you dance, You can buy two ready made belts on line. They have a demonstration of the belts on you tube but I can't find it. When I do I will send you the link.

Mr Smagris, Thank you for your instructional video. My question is about the proper use of the side steps on a fast moving dance floor. How does the leader initiate the side step in a way that does not present an obstacle to other dance pairs coming fast from behind?

+tone4days, thanks for good question. Side steps are for beginners, more for teaching purposes so that couples who even do not know yet how to dance Reverse Turn still can dance. On other hand it's possible to use almost stationary movements near corners and it shouldn't be as obstacle in a way of other couples. Hope it helps. Egils

Question re the steps: My mother (who was Viennese) taught me the waltz when I was a child. However, the steps were 'apart, together, together' even when turning, as opposed to what I see here (and in other videos) 'apart, apart together' when turning. Am I remembering incorrectly, or was what I learned just a variation? Thank you.

Very interesting question. I think in version ‘apart, together, together’ dancer who goes forward does first together as “slightly apart”. Dancer who goes bak dances real first together. Generally this is very rotary version with very little progression. Our version is with progression and swing (not just rotation).

Bella thanks for your question. In Viennese Waltz we have both Natural and Reverse Turns. I suggest start learning with Natural Box and Turn.

Hi Egils, I absolutely love the Viennese Waltz! It is a ton of fun. I tend to bounce every once in a while due to the fast pacing. Are there any exercises I can do to eliminate the bounce? What advice would you give for this?

Hi Emily thanks for good question. I suggest to rise less when you close your feet, both in feet and knees. Feeling should be almost like you dancing Chasse. Also footwork in 3rd step when you closing feet is Flat Foot (not Toe - Heel). On 6th Step is Toe - Heel but no to high. Hope it helps. Egils

Dear Egils, could you please give a word of advise - what shall I do in order to minimize "jumping" on the 3d and 6th steps of the turn. That's a real menace for me - I always jumping/hopping when I close my feet during turns. Also, what can you tell about rise and fall and body sway in VW?? I often see an incredible amount of sway when I watch top-tier couples performing VW, but at the same time I've been taught that unlike slow waltz, VW shall be rather flat

Thanks for you questions. About "jumping" on 3 and 6 of Natural Turn try not to rise with feet to high (heels closer to floor) on 3 and not rise in feet at all on 6 (technically footwork of step 6 is flat foot). Closing feet should feel similar to chasse action. It's quite different feeling compered to Slow Waltz. In this sense Viennese Waltz should feel flat. About Sway - you can try to change classic pattern of Sway from SRR SLL to LSR RSL. Then body will produce more rolling type of movement which is populat today in competitive dancing. Hope you find this somehow helpful.

My partner has trouble when I transition from the natural turns to the side steps. She does not get the signal I send so she oftentimes continue with the natural turn while I stop and try the side step, hence she loses her balance. What signal can I give her without talking of course?

My suggestion is to manage amount of body turn on previous bar so that on count 1 body moves to side almost without turn (then it's obviously side step). If on 1 body moves forward or backward then it's natural turn.

1) When you get dizzy change direction of your rotation or better change rotation before you get dizzy. Also you can try to fix eye to one point (direction) for almost one bar. When you dance forward look in line of dance, when you dance backward look against line of dance. 2) Breath can be "sinchronized" with your movement, then it works better. There is no one correct way to do that. Also when you get tired your breathing will change.

Here is description what we dance 07:39 Hope it helps: 1) Do 4 Natural Turns (Man starts with Right Foot: fwd, back, forward, back; Lady starts with Left Foot: back, forward, back, forward) 2) Then dance Change Step forward (Man starts with Right Foot forward; Lady Starts with Left Foot back) 3) Continue with 2 Reverse Turns (Man starts with Left Foot: forward, back; Lady starts with Right Foot: back, fwd). 4) Then dance Change Step forward (Man starts with Left Foot forward; Lady Starts with Right Foot back)

It depends. Natural Turn Man starts with right foot forward. In order to start with left foot I suggest to do preparation step diagonally back (123), then change direction of movement forward and dance Natural Turn.

While the dancing looks so elegant, I wish you would break it down to stages with steps so that we can practice step by step. For instance, in PP and chasse it would be better if you could explain such as after closed change put left foot forward, take right foot to the side , then place left foot behind so that you are in PP and can go on to the chasse. I found your workshop vide explanations though they seemed to be for dance teachers. The other instructions seem a bit to fast to follow. Thanks

Amount of Turn differs. In Box we turn 1/4 turn (90 degrees) per bar. In Natural and Reverse Turn we turn 1/2 (180 degrees) per bar.

Thanks for your question! If we dance natural turn (turn to right) Man starts with right foot forward. If we dance reverse turn (turn to left) then Man starts with left foot forward. We need to learn both turns. I teach natural turn first, because it’s easier for beginners. Hope this helps!

Is it possible to add these steps to the Sound of Music song “Grand Waltz” ? I want to waltz to this song but i almost think it’s too fast :/ I thought the Viennese waltz would fit it. Any suggestions for how to waltz to the song “grand waltz”? Please 🙏🏼

Grand Waltz from Sound of Music is in right tempo. Start dancing with very small steps to fit music. Later you will adjust and increase length of movement. Hope it helps!

Is it Latvia dancing in the Viennese waltz steps to the side + behind the cross? Never in viener valz has anyone danced like this in the whole world 👀🙄👎 in wiener valz the transition steps are Front + side + together and not behind cross

Thanks for your comment. This side movement (used in social dancing) is for beginners who know only Natural Turn. After learning Reverse Turn we dance classical closed changes.
