#Laos cuisine is a somewhat of a black box to foreigners, especially Westerners, myself included. But, if you know #Thai food (specifically the food of Isaan), then you probably know more than you think about #Lao #food. In this video, we're doing a proper #foodtour of #Vientiane, capital of this mysterious country. Pork laap and raw duck blood are on the menu. Let's check it out.
Don't forget to watch in 4K!
Thanks for watching! Cheers, Nick :)

The way you ate those Larbs, wow! You are Lao to the core! As a Lao person I can’t even eat those peppers like you did. And that duck blood larb, I hardly see “farang” eat it, you are the first farang I see who tried it. Thank you for trying and loving Lao foods. By the way, we usually don’t mix jeow or hot sauce with Larb, we eat it separately with sticky rice. If you mix jeow with Larb it will just add more salty and sour taste to the Larb which is already salty/sour. But hey I see you love it so nothing wrong with that.

That mixed the duck blood with some water and some salt. You Gotta know how to parts all those ingredients to get it turn into gelatin. All the meats in there are all from the ducks . They usually eat as appetizer or something with liquor and beer. This is one of Lao dish that I don’t eat.

When eating Lao food it all about the fingers when you can. Duck's blood is one of my favorites. Have been out when I was the only white guy with a restaurant of Lao food. My wife is Lao and she says the is no such word as Laotian. I think we Americans made it up. It's Lao country , Lao language and Lao people. Your history was spot on a thing many miss.

Just to help you out with your pronunciation... Jeow (the dipping sauce) = gel but with a very faint 'w' sound at the end. So, gelw. The duck blood dish you ate has cooked duck meat at the bottom of the dish (not buffalo). I'm not sure what they call it at that restaurant but it sounds like you're saying pang phet? It's also comonly known as laap phet also. You know what laap is and phet is duck. Phet is pronounced with a pb sound where the ph is. Pbhet. Pet = spicy Pang = expensive or precious (depending on how you use it) Also, Lao people always eat sticky rice with our hands. We never put it on a spoon. We typically will lightly kneed a little bit into a ball (if you're dipping) or in a little bowl is you're trying to pick something up with the rice. If you don't want to pick up the food (for example, laap) with your rice, you can use a spoon for the laap then take the sticky rice with your hands and chase the laap with it. Obviously you can eat it the way you want but as a Lao person, I cringe when I see people use a spoon for sticky rice lol. It's such a staple in our diet so for me, I like to see it being eaten the way we would eat it 😎 Also to help you further with your Lao (if you're still in country): Moo = pork Pba (that pb sound again) = fish Gai = chicken Kuai (this one is hard to spell out phonetically since it's a mixture of odd sounds, think Hawaii but with a k and without the "ee" sound at the end) = buffalo Seen = meat. Used to refer to food and not the animal. So you can say seen moo to mean pork. Seen pa to mean fish meat and so forth. You're doing well with the sabaidee and kop chai. It goes a long way. 🤝
