I put their first ep on my turntable yesterday, first time in maybe 5 or 6 years - and I could swear it got a lot better. They shouldn’t have changed their name. It’s the right name for them, and it’s a creative expression. Woke activists are hands down the worst people in the world. I still call them Vietcong, and when I play their record, I reach for the one that says “VIETCONG” on it, and I encourage everyone who buys their new records to grab a big, black Sharpie, cross out whatever they’re calling themselves now, and unapologetically write “VIETCONG” on it ☕️

Saw them live in Vienna on a hot summer night in a tiny venue. They had to stop after 45min as no one could stand the heat anymore- best 45min ever, sweat dripping out of every pore not only because of the heat but because of the energy spend speeding along to those tunes! Amazing. Included a nice chat with the band outside afterwards. Wish they‘d still perform & tour!

Okay, I'll own up, I'm the listener that looked it up... "Where does the expression ‘by the skin of my teeth’ come from? After Shakespeare, a prolific coiner of new words, the King James translation of the Bible has been the biggest source of phrases in English. ‘By the skin of one’s teeth’ is one of them. Meaning ‘narrowly’ or ‘barely’, and referring usually to a narrow escape from disaster, the phrase comes from the Book of Job, in which Job is subjected to horrible trials by Satan, to be relieved finally by God. The precise phrase Job uses is slightly different: ‘My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth’ (19:20). Exactly what ‘the skin of one’s teeth’ might be is not entirely clear, and there have been many theories put forward. The most plausible explanation is that it refers to the thin porcelain exterior of the tooth (rather than the gums). In other words, Job escaped with his teeth, but just barely. Job is comparing the narrow margin of his escape with the shallow ‘skin’ or porcelain of a tooth: the equivalent, in fact, of a ‘hair’s breadth’." It SUCKS, first of all, because it's an affront to freedom of expression. It sucks secondly because these guys spent much time and energy building a following under their original name. "Preoccupations"? I couldn't even remember that name til I came here. Viet Cong got screwed by self-appointed, ridiculously overzealous P.C. bullies. I recollect inna 1980s, the primary threat to free expression came from right-wing assholes-- now in 2017, it's lil misguided "social justice warriors", possessed of the belief that their every opinion is above reproach. These days, I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm a progressive.

"second hand industry" as though the first time lyrics make sense having seen them putting on a musical smorgasbord of skill, as the set progresses they ramp it up with "muted lips on japanese ships" and "deflated amplifiers" electric razors, how soon after did they become #preoccupations for again, skill, now with focus, and i'd say drive but i don't know that they utilize that feature other than as stated in the interview "everything's turning inside out" "we'll never get home" - the lyricism which can be difficult to pick against the raucous tunes would make a beautiful play, a sequel to #wherethewildthingsare plus one and closer in detail than the one by the similar author about monsters in closets
