@@rock3times what breed does Vietnamese refugees belong to? The kind that is pro-war, pro-gun, loyal to Republican regimes, & members of insurrectionist organizations to create all kinds of societal & political chaos all over the place? Why are you proud of the breed that loves to see Vietnamese people massacred by the puppet government of South Vietnam in the past? The kind that proudly lives on dirty money, which the corrupt American government sent over to keep the war going as long as the military industrial complex wanted? Did the Vietnam war give Vietnamese refugees legitimate reasons to come to America & receive government welfare for many generations? At the same time pro-war refugees educate younger generations to live with malicious hatred, hostility, & evil ambition toward their original root. In reality, Vietnamese refugees or other types of Viet Kieu can never erase their traits & appearance to become white Americans. Do you still keep your wishful thinking of having another war for Vietnamese refugees to come back & enjoy your blood money?

My recent trip to Vietnam really opened my eyes to the incredible warmth and kindness of the people there. It was such a stark contrast to the sometimes harsh interactions I’ve witnessed in mainland China. Being married to someone from Shenzhen, I’ve seen firsthand the difference in treatment she receives compared to me. It’s fascinating how cultural dynamics can vary so much from one place to another.

As a young sailor, I served in Vietnam from June 1970 until just before Christmas 1971. My work took me from Da Nang to Rach Gia, and all through the Mekong Delta by land, boat, and air. I have many, many fond memories of the Vietnamese people I met and worked with along the way. One Vietnamese commander struck me as more of an uncle looking after his extended family, occasionally looking in on our lovely young receptionist/translator, Miss Nguyen Thi Tham, I had the great good fortune to work alongside with while in Cam Ranh Bay. Her smile and laughter would warm the coldest heart. After I left Vietnam to start college, I immediately sent her a large box filled with bolts of cloth, sewing materials, snaps, buttons, zippers and soaps, shampoos and cosmetics as a sort of farewell gift. She and her mom liked to (had to, actually), sew and mend their clothing to keep looking lovely. I included a new, clear rain slicker for her as hers bore evidence of repairs to snaps and buttons. A few weeks later, I received a lovely letter from her, with photos of her smiling and wearing her new rain slicker during a shower in Da Lat. She was unforgettable, a beautiful orchid gracing each day I was in Cam Ran Bay. I had an adventure with some Vietnamese navy officers, going fishing with them in the outer bay area one night. I had been intrigued by the lighted boats in the outer bay area, and they invited me to go one night. I got in trouble with my American executive officer next morning for not asking for permission (which I knew I would not have been granted, of course): "That's your last fishing trip with the Vietnamese navy, sailor!" I returned to our little office; my division officer and sweet Miss Tham all knew in advance that I was in trouble -- and we all had a good laugh. Earlier, while down south, I was assigned to the Seabees' civic action program, where small teams were assigned to provinces to do work with the local communities (schools, generators, parks, roads, and so on). So many memories, almost all of them good, even though the war would occasionally make its presence felt. On our street, now, (Oregon) we have several wonderful Vietnamese families with us. Two old ladies who walk (and gossip!) together escaped from Vietnam in about 1978 on boats, as did one very nimble Vietnamese grandpa (he's 84!) who was an MP in Saigon and got captured and finally was able to flee by boat a few years later himself. I see him occasionally zipping up and down the street on an electric scooter, enjoying himself. Wonderful neighbors. Glad you enjoyed your visit to the lovely country of Vietnam! And, oh yes, the "schools" of motor scooters were just as scary back in 1970's Saigon. I remember being terrified of hitting anybody when I drove around town in a Jeep or van. But I got used to it soon.

Your story was about free, capitalist South-Vietnamese before 1975, whose characters/personalities could be compared to Taiwanese's or South-Korean's. The Vietnamese people currently living in Vietnam are very different, as they've been indoctrinated with maxism, worship Putin and still view America as enemy/invader (especially for those living north of 17th parallel), although, like Chinese, "to badmouth the US is the job, to live in the US is the life". One of the biggest differences between China and Vietnam even though both are socialist countries is: ambition. China has ambitions to dominate the world to compete with the US. Vietnam does not. Vietnamese people have the right to permanently own land. China does not. Vietnamese people have the right to organize trade unions in their factories or businesses. China does not. Vietnam's parliamentary election system comes directly from the people. China does not.

Vietnamese food is too watery for my taste, Thailand still reigns supreme! oh and Vietnam would have incurred more damage if China did not warn the US not to cross the dividing line between north and south, the US respected that because of their experiences in Korea, basically you Americans didn't have all the options and fought with your hands tied, add to that a maturing media landscape rendering old school butcheri undoable, and yes Vietnam gave China a bludy nose because of intelligence failure and arrogance as well as a slightly different objective which concerns Cambodia, it was a defeat for China and the US in the end, one due to arrogance and one due to restraint respectively; if the US fought like in WW2 here in the Philippines then we can all say goodbye to the Vietnamese as they would have been blitzed in Hanoi, if the French can conquer Indo-China then the US can too if they had the same freedom of operations as the Early Colonial French, it would be a blud bath without any news reports about it until the w@r is over but we live in a modern world where w@r cr1mes are a thing.

There seems to be a lot less waste. Compared to Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand I've seen less corruption here with my own eyes, but I've heard from people who lived here that it absolutely exists. But I've only been in small rural areas so far on this trip and my previous trip is 9 years ago so this comment is a mix of outdated impressions and new first impressions.

I think no matter the information shared by Lei in this video, it’s important for everyone to understand and keep in mind that there are over 100 million Vietnamese. Or even if the Third Republic of Vietnam should be given any attention and aid to the same degree as the ROC in Taiwan. Chinese cuisine, especially that of Hong Kong and maybe Shanghai next, is probably the most delicious cuisine in the world. It is flavorful, well presented, and colorful. My father was invited to a Chinese wedding where the host served 72 courses and the banquet lasted 3 days. That is how wonderful Chinese cuisine is. The only thing that comes close to Chinese is maybe French. That said Vietnamese cuisine incorporates more vegetables and fruit into its dishes which is not bad at all. Vietnam liberated Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge in 1979, and continues to heavily influence Cambodia. Both are Buddhist. Hun Sen fled to Vietnam, joining troops there opposed to the Khmer Rouge. He returned to Cambodia after the Vietnamese installed a new government in 1979 and was made minister of foreign affairs. He became prime minister in 1985. @@johnbaker5565 The recent history of Indochina brings nothing to roots of both cultures and demography. There's a strange idea from westerners that they often think the French had left a lot of influences on Vietnamese culture and mindset (some even said genetics!!!???). I reckon this prejudice comes from a fact that other colonies of westerners are often influenced deeply in their cultures like in South America and Africa. But this is a wrong thought in case of Vietnam (and maybe Cambodia as well). The occupation of the French in Vietnam is too short and always met with strong resistance of the Vietnamese, therefore it only leave a light trace on the surface of Vietnamese culture and mentality. You are wrong in your assumptions because you don't know that actually Vietnamese have very long and tough history of resisting foreign invasion since 2000 years already, this produced very dense core of Viet spirit that makes foreigners hard to influence. The exceptional case is Chinese influence, only because too long time and brutal forcing from China in around recent 1,500 years continuously. The 80 years of French colony is nothing in our mentality and culture. And politics as well as foreign relations have nothing to do with both culture and genetics of Vietnamese. Vietnamese had the tradition of not marrying in for the line of men and restricting marrying out for the line of women with foreigners. It's our ancestors' creation to avoid assimilation from neighboring enemies, or actually Chinese. Yeah nowadays you will say that's racist as hell, but your nowadays is only maximum 200 years (and I doubt about its future) while thanks to this rule, Vietnamese people could stand still, survive and exist next to the brutal giant from the north after 2000 years of brutal and cruel invasion, ruling and assimilation. I can only say that our ancestors were very very intelligent and wise that they could see far in thousands of years to preserve our linage, because mixing yourself with your enemy is the fastest way to go to destruction of your people. Look at other countries and peoples that had existed in the mainland China, there were various peoples and countries before, but they made a mistake to mix with Chinese and then they disappeared. Nowadays, there're only Vietnamese, Koreans and Japanese surviving from Chinese assimilation. Therefore we share some parts of common politics and colony history with Cambodians but it makes nothing change in my statement that Vietnamese have nothing in common with Cambodians both culture and genetics. Viets are Viets, Cams are Cams, we don't mix.years years

Vietnamese culture, politics, etc are a game of balance. Influenced by Confucianism, Vietnam had a top down political system. But the people exerted their rights. There's a Vietnamese saying, "The village traditions supersede the edicts of the king." When faced with the imminent Mongolian invasion, the king convened all the village elders to determine the next course of action. The social elites in the past wanted submissive wives but Vietnamese women held the power of the purse. Vietnamese women had more freedom than their traditional Chinese counterparts, some rights were unwritten while some were codified. In geopolitics, Vietnamese leaders walk a fine line. They don't want to be submissive to the CCP but don't want to antagonize their northern neighbor. In the past, Hanoi used the USSR to counterbalance Communist China. The 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War was Beijing's retaliation for such strategy. Chinese aggression has been a millennia long challenge for the Vietnamese. Nothing's changing in the foreseeable future. The Vietnamese leaders have been trying to ingratiate themselves with Western powers since while Vietnam was still under French colonialism. Ho Chi Minh famously said, "Would rather sniff French dung for 5 years than Chinese dung all life." Hanoi wants better tights with Washington, like Manila, Taipei, Tokyo, and Seoul do; the challenge is to do so without pissing off Xi and his comrades. Vietnamese cuisine is also a game of balance. There's a balance among the ingredients like vegetables and meats as well as among the flavors. Pho perfectly represents that balance. You can taste the sweet broth, the salty sauce, the spicy chilis, the sour lime, a touch of bitter in the Thai basil, the umami in the seasoning.

Lei, that is quite a surprise to see you shown in another country. A good change and more interesting for the audience to see as well. I like to add a few more things to what you have spoken about and others here may have not mentioned. For the infrastructure, there have been huge developments there in the past 15+ years. More highways and roads, major bridges, seaports, airports and others. Noted that Vietnam also has very vast waterways (excluding ocean coasts), more than even the US or China. Commerce transport by water is the most cost effective. The country also has a 100% electrification. The metro rails in Hanoi and HCMC have been slow mainly due to disagreements and renegotiations, cost over-run, slow disbursement of funds and change to planned routes ( HCMC). The fundings are from outside, where the HCMC metro rail is through ODA loans from Japan, while Hanoi is from the high interest loans from China. China got the project for Hanoi with the lowest bid and through bribery, a common practice China used in other countries. As far as the project delays, that is mainly due to the reasons previously stated. For the property prices, the new housing units in the big cities such as HCMC and Hanoi and those on busy streets are pricey. Most are behind busy streets and in the alleys are much less expensive. Houses in small cities and towns are even lower. As for education, there is no real gradual change. The international PISA test results have been quite similar since 2012 through 2018. The results have been comparatively positive, even out performing industrialize countries such as the US, UK, and Australia. There is a sudden decline for the 2022 PISA results and the OECD countries experiencing an "unprecedented" decline as well. This is very likely due to the change in the school environment as schools around the world were going through extended periods of shutdowns due to Covid. Developing countries have even less resources such as computers, while students in the US were provided with laptops by their schools. A sudden change in test results would be attributed to a temporary major change in the school enviroment. Another major difference is that unlike China, there is no such hukou household registration system. People (and their children) are free to move and live where they choose and where they can find work and other opportunities.

Lion dragon view was awesome and also the river tour. I had a favorite Vietnamese restaurant here in Cincinnati, the owners came over during the 70's. Sad they closed down this past year. My favorites were the soups they served.

China borders touch so many countries. Show me one country they haven't grabbed neighboring country's land. First thing they do is enter into neighbor's land and move any land mark posts. Next they build some rooms or construction. In case dispute launched, they show construction, claiming they were always holding that land!!
