I did overnight from St. Petersburg to Moscow. It was straight out of the 1940s. But still nice. And they had a full meal (breakfast) for you and wool blankets and clean sheets. Cabins more spacious as well. This seemed doable, but not nice at all. The cockroaches would have sent me over the edge. I couldn't have slept.

i just did that train (Grand Express, Grand class cabin) about a month ago, both ways. the cabin was nice, nothing real special about it. the attendants spoke almost no english and translated with google translate on their phones, but were super friendly and helpful. overall it was a good time. i've also done the London to Edinburgh Caledonian Sleeper. about the same except for the no english part :)

In Vietnam, people don't normally use toilet paper. They have that little shower spray next to the toilet so you can clean yourself off. When I went to visit my extended family, I went to a supermarket and bought some toilet paper there. OMG, it is scented!! I love it.
@munstergirl255 жыл бұрын
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but soft bed and hard bed is basically 1st/2nd class sleeper . it doesn't mean the bed is any harder really, just that you have less space since there are 6 instead of 4 beds. The thing to really avoid is hard Seat. you are basically travelling on a park bench

If I were you....I would not, repeat, would not have put that pillow inside my coat to lay my head on. Eggs from head lice could be in your coat now, waiting to hatch. 1 head louse can lay many hundreds of eggs. I worked as nurse in a public school whose children had massive head lice problems. Once a classroom had more than 4 cases of head lice all of their coats, backpacks, hats and gloves had to be bagged immediately after entering the classroom. On the wall were the coat hooks were, that area was sprayed with a de-losing agent. Just be very careful. They spread like wildfire.

We took the train from Hanoi to Saigon (36 hours) about 2 weeks ago. The short story is - our train hit and killed a rural villager, we got destroyed by bed bugs, the AC never got the cabin below 85 Fahrenheit, and our roommates trashed the room too. It was not the easiest couple of days! Also when our train hit the man, his body came to rest under our train car. We watched the engineers pull his mangled body out from under the train (it was very bad), set him on a tarp, hand him off to the other villagers with some paperwork, and 5 minutes after ending his life we were on our way. At the next stop, another worker hosed the blood off of the train car as the new passengers boarded...

I took a sleeper train from Bangkok to Trang. I do recommend it snd your room is really deluxe. Our train was just seats that turned into upper and lower berths. I brought my own sheets as it were. A sarong I used as a seat and shawl as a blanket. I covered the pillow with one of my tee shirts. It was fine. The restrooms were a different issue. A hole in the floor you per over. And a hose to rinse yourself off with. So the floor was slippery. And with the train shaking I feared my foot would go down the potty hole. Lol. But it was fine cuz Trang was amazing. We went camping on a private island. Incredible. I rented a cabin. Not fancy but nice for our group to have a private shower. I’d go again in a heart beat. But remember to bring grippy shoes and my own TP for sure. And small towels or cloth napkins to dry my hands with cuz they don’t have those things there. Napkins are easier to wash our snd dry in the sink
@CarWhiz225 жыл бұрын
Also another tip is to be very wary of your stuff. I went on a sleeper train in thailand and woke up to find someone going through my backpack...so be careful if you go for the eye mask/ear plug option!

We did our first overnight train ride in Vietnam as well. It was definitely an experience, but we've been hooked on train travel ever since 😀 We travelled on hard sleepers and when we got to our cabin we found some people had snuck their partners in there and were sleeping two to a bed. There was a lot of chatting going on all night, so ear plugs are a great tip!

That was interesting :) As a teenager my parents and I (and sometimes also grandparents) used to travel by night trains. We used to put the car on the train as well. Mostly it was from my home country Belgium to the South of France, or to Spain. It's fun, but indeed, not easy to get some good sleep on those. Have to say though, the ones we went on were way nicer than on your trip. And that was some 30 years ago already.

TC Gaming rode the train from Da Nanag to Hoi an. It was just before the New Years activity. The train was totally overloaded. We sat an wooden benches 6 to a seat. Horrible. I guess kids ride free because they’re where laying on the floor.the washrooms where unusable. The did come around with a food cart but we didn’t like the looks of it and I did read do not eat the food. The distance was 100 km but it took 3 hours. Scenery’s was amazing.But for any long distance I would fly. We met some Canadian school teachers that just finished there there contracts in Saigon and they took the bus to Danang. We did see them in Danang at a supermarket looking for Lice Shampoo. The came in contact with lice from the headrest on the bus. So never forget your pillow cover and a small spray bottle of Otherwise love Vietnam..

I’m not sure if you’ve already taken Amtrak: America’s passenger train, if you have- great! If not, when you come back to the states, you should definitely start in California and take Amtrak’s California Zepher to Chicago. Or start east with the Capitol Limited or Cardinal to Chicago. That’s the hub, and you can branch out from there. I’ve traveled Amtrak 27 times, and it will be worth the money, the views, and you get clean sheets with fresh toilet paper. Also, there is a lounge car and dining car. It’s amazing. Happy Travels.

We were in Nashville, went to the station to see if we could catch a train to Memphis. We were told that the trains only go North/South, not East/ West. Erm!!. Ah, Hoi An, the place of my dreams. When in Hoi An try and locate Baby Mustard, a very nice restaurant out in the fields 2 miles to the northwest. It's a very nice place for lunch or dinner and they use produce from their own vegetable garden. And try and spend some time with the H'Mong Sisters right at the beach. We went there for an hour, but ended up to spend all day enjoying the sun, the drinks and the food.

When you are next in the UK or mainland Europe check out the sleeper trains, a totally different experience, they are all 1st. class or Business Class, with crisp clean sheets, some have en-suite bathrooms, all have a buffet and dining car serving dinner, breakfast and lunch depending on length of journey time. They are not cheap but still less than flights and 4*+ hotel, and a lot less hassle. The stations at either end have dedicated lounges where one can relax, eat and have a shower, if you did not squash into the onboard one, which is a tiny wet room, with the shower over the loo, at least that saves time! If you really want 1st. class do the Orient Express all the way to Venice at 50 MPH, you can even start it in London, but it is a bus link between Folkestone and Calais using the Chunnel, the train carrying ferries are long gone.

I was super happy to have taken a silk sleeping bag with my and an eye mask and ear plugs.
