2:28 The Italians probably didn't notice because Italians do not have milky coffees after breakfast time 😀 Having worked in Italy I asked a colleague and was told that milk is regarded as a breakfast item, hence to them a capuccino in the afternoon would be the equivalent of eating cornflakes for lunch.

My most amazing train experience was catching the frecciarossa from Florence to Venice, walking out of the station in Venice into the sun shine and being gobsmacked by the view!!!! canal, boats, church, bridge. A mini-screenshot of what you picture Venice to be. Just beautiful & perfect. And so unexpected. I just wasn't expecting to walk out of a train station into that pictorial beauty right there!

Best train ride I had was in Italy about 30 years ago, wooden bench seats, no air con, a slow lumpy ride but I had my Walkman on listening to some a-ha, the windows on the carriage rolled down to a level you could lean out into the warm breeze, smell the countryside and enjoy the views. One of those 'perfect moments' you get only a few times in your life.

Took a bus (all day and way too hot) from Madrid to Seville. Arrived in Seville late enough to not get a room (it was hosting the 1992 World's Fair) so spent the night in an outdoor park that people used as a toilet. Went directly to the train station and bought the first ticket out of Spain, to Perpignan, France. Unfortunately, that train didn't leave until 8:00 p.m. that night, so had to stay up that entire day too. Got on the train to Perpignan and slept like a BABY in a COMA. BEST TRAIN TRIP EVER! To this day, if I'm tired I ask myself, "Are you SEVILLE to PERPIGNAN tired?" Answer has always been, "Not even close," so far. LOL

Craig Rome to Venice is almost exactly like Boston to NY. 5 hours by car, 4 by train (and this one is not high speed.) However, only a single system in all of Europe turns a profit: the Eurostar, which posted a 10% margin in 2018. The rest are heavily subsidized. Much if the same in Asia. Only commuter trains in Taipei and Tokyo turn profits.
@MrItaliansound5 жыл бұрын
@@afcgeo882 No, Boston - New York 216 miles It's more like Boston - Filadelfia 318 miles Venice - Rome 326 miles, 3h40 by train the Frecciarossa train travels at 350km/h (217mph) due to the line, but the train can reach 400km/h (250mph). For the first section between Venice and Bologna it is not possible to always go at high speed, in fact Milan is further away from Rome than Venice, it is 400 miles away, but the train takes less than 3h10.
@afcgeo8825 жыл бұрын
peoplebrotherhood Venezia to Roma is 526km. The train does that in 3,6 hours. The average speed is 146km/h or 90.7mph. The standard for “high speed train” designation is 200km/h on upgraded track or 250km/h on newly built high speed track. What a train “could” do is irrelevant. What’s important is the average speed of actual journeys.

Beyond Your Doorstep lmao. Train travel in Italy...I don’t think it’s that nice. I had so many problems the last time I was in the country. There was a day that I was with friends going from Rome to right outside Lucca and they had a lot of problems because of strikes, fires too close to the tracks, etc. and we got to the city too late to catch the last train to take us to where we were staying (a good 15-20 minute drive from Lucca). Thankfully one of the workers on the train was willing to drive me and my friends to where we were going though.

I took business class once on Amtrack from San Diego to LA. It didn't cost a lot more, but the main reason I did it was because I had run the San Diego marathon the day before and the regular class didn't guarantee a seat - if I'd had to stand it would have been a problem. Turns out the train was mostly empty and I didn't take advantage of some of the other perks that came with business class (it was a while ago, but I think I could have gotten a free newspaper, and maybe free coffee/tea) but I was sore and stayed in my seat. The seats might have been a bit nicer too but I didn't see the regular seats.

The train trip was interesting as I had travelled from Rome to Venice on the highest grade back in 1994. The experience was not as good as this one. The one thing that I thought detracted here was that the lack of carpeting. My personal best train rides have been the Orient Express but for ordinary travel I have enjoyed Acela on the north east coast of the US which I have used several times, all the way from Washington DC to Boston. Sleeper cars across the US are surprisingly rather poor - in particular for those in sleeper cars travelling first class there is no separate dining or lounge areas. The food was served cheap airline style and really discouraged me and my American husband. It was a splendid way to actually see the country though and to get a real sense of the enormity of the US continent.
