Follow along as we look into the very iconic M16-A2 and why the Vietnam Veterans Hated it so much...
This iconic weapon is hard to come by, but thankfully Springfield Armory build it and release their very own... SA-16A2..
I hope yall enjoy this video and let me know how y'all feel about it?

to be pedantic: the A1 was VN era. A2s were later. A2s were after my time in. My issue rifle was an A1 That tapping on your helmet thing really became a habit. Still do it to this day.

Correct. In 1982 I was issued a M16a1 at Parris island. In 1985 2nd Battalion 5th Marines were issued the M16A2 and it was a wonderful rifle.

True. Was in the Corps. '84 was issued the A1 - w/full auto selector. Then received the A2 about '89 - w/3 round burst. Then came the M4 with fancy sights and shit. Been out since 2006 so I can't say what the Corps uses now. I recall having to use the A1/A2 iron sights during qualification on Okinawa in the rain to hit target at 500 yards. Could barely see the target. We were miserable and wet. Miss those fckn days!

The other issues with the A 1 of Vietnam era was that Stoner specified a chrome plated chamber which DOD thought was unnecessarily expensive. and they also changed the powder for the ammo.

There was also the jamming from getting dust and dirt in the mechanism. Unlike an AK, the M16's had tight tolerances. So they could get jammed easily from dirt or sand. I think the A2 was where they added the forward assist. My Grandfather had an FFL in the 60's, and I remember him bringing home 2 new AR-15's in 1969. I was 11 at the time. He taught me how to shoot it. The most versatile firearm platform there is. I have a "pistol" in 300 Blackout, and a 20 inch AR10 in 6.5 Creedmore. One for hunting in the woods, and one for calling long distance. My next one will be a BCA in 8.6 Blackout. Im really intrigued by a barrel with a 1 in 3 twist rate (bit of a science nerd), that trades forward energy for rotational energy to still deliver a massive energy transfer at conact. Subsonic, suppressed must sound like a pellet gun. Thanks Crispy!

One of the biggest mistakes made, was the first batch didn't have a chromed barrel which aided in jams and fouling, then add in the bad brass for the 5.56 that the extraction bolt would rip the lip off, leaving the rest of the spent cartridge stuck in the barrel/receiver. I have a Bushmaster AR-15A2 myself.

My dad was a Vietnam vet, and the A1 was his rifle. He got to Nam in ‘69, and by then, they had got a lot of the kinks out. When it was first issued, most of the men had never fired it, they were handed the rifle, and no cleaning kit, since it supposedly didn’t need to be cleaned, and sent in to battle! They quickly found out that they definitely needed to be cleaned! They also cut corners on the barrels. The early ones were not chrome lined, and contributed to some of the issues. On top of being told they didn’t need to clean the rifle, the early ammo used ball powder that burned especially dirty, which compounded the issues.

The wacking the magazine thing also came from the need to make sure the ammo was at the back of the mag, which helped prevent jamming. That was what they taught us in the Air Force in the 80's. We were deployable as aircraft maintainers, so we had to qualify with M-16s, but we would only be using weapons as a last ditch thing, so they gave us junky Vietnam era M-16s, and when training, not seating the bullets really did seem to cause more jams, but keeping it clean was the biggest deal.

I think it depends on the time frame, my dad was in the fifth infantry in 68-69 and he loved it and still speaks highly of it. He had a long storied career in law enforcement and early on he had a personally owned m16. Unfortunately he sold it and an HK 33 in about 84-85. I know it sucks and hindsight is 20/20. I remember shooting both as a kid but enjoyed the colt much more due to its soft shooting, especially in auto. So not everyone had bad experiences with the m16. Cheers

One of the other things that caused issues for the M-16 in 'Nam was the fact that the ammo the military manufactured for it purposely used the wrong powder on top of not issuing cleaning kits. Why would they do that you ask? Great question. It's because the Army Material Command wanted the M-14 battle rifle to be the standard issue rifle and had in fact rigged the tests to keep the M-14 in service over the M-16. It was a huge bureaucratic battle that the then Secretary of Defense stepped in and made the M-16 the new standard issue rifle for the US armed forces. Army Materials Command didn't like that this was done counter to their desires and so they set it up for failure in the field.

Yeah the M-16 I fired in basic (USAF) was allot different from the one issued to our Vietnam vet's. I enjoyed the range days I got in the USAF to re-qualify (every 2yrs) on the M-16. When I retired in 2007 I wanted to own an AR-15 but didn't think I'd be able to afford one. Enter stage right...the DPMS Panther the affordable ($450) AR-15 sold at your local Walmart. Why so affordable you ask, No Forward Assist, No Dust Cover, Flat Top A-4 Style Upper and with the purchase of each weapon, Tapco will give you 5 polymer magazine (with proof of purchase) but none the less a fine weapons system.

Funny story about the m16a1, in 2006 I was at ft Huachucah AZ and just before our final ftx they took all our m16a4s and the few m4 away and issued us brand new m16a1s. All the MOSt’s freaked the fuck out because we had the auto selection (not burst). But as anyone who’s fired blanks knows, that shit gets dirty AF. Long story short almost everyone’s weapon jammed except the fey that never fired (so they don’t have to clean them.

err, the earliest branch to adopt the A2 was the Marine Corps in 1983, then the Army in 1986 ...so how could they have been in the Vietnam war..which ended in the late 70's? You prolly meant the 'A1' which was a USAF designation and not relative to the PICA...which was the Army. Primary In Charge of Acquisition, the US Army, never designated an 'A1'. Yet the 'A2' didn't happen until the 80's .

I was gonna say… I’m no expert… but I thought it was A1 that was carried in VN. Not sure about the other differences between the A1 & A2 but easily distinguishable by the smooth triangular shaped hand guard (shown in the historic VN footage). The A2 Crispy is showcasing with the ribbed hand guard is, of course, the A2 (duh). I trained on the modified A1 (USAF 1982-92), modified to shoot .22. Yeah it jammed a lot and wasn’t particularly comfortable for a LH shooter like myself bc it dumped the hot brass into the crook of my right elbow 😖 (made a note to myself after that, no matter how hot the forecast on range day was, *ALWAYS* wear long sleeves).

the reason the rifles were sent without cleaning kits was they weren't supposed to need it. Because the new type of barrel had a coating that was to help keep it clean longer . but it was also more expensive so someone decided to use uncoated barrels to get the rifles out faster. unfortunatly they did need the cleaning kits. so ya it was a massive FUBAR
