People often remember the Vietnam War being fought in jungles and rice paddies. But tanks also played a crucial role in this war. In this video we look at 4 of the US tanks used during the Vietnam War and the part they played. From the M48 Patton Medium tank to the Ontos Tank Destroyer.
At Premier History we want to take you on a journey through time and grow your knowledge to see what it was actually like to be in some of the pivotal points in World History.

If my memory serves, there were Norwegian Chaffees (90 mm gun) deployed in Kosovo 1999. I seem to remember the idea was to leave them there following their end of mission. It could have been Bosnia 95/96 my various Balkans tours have merged over the years. Under the NATO/UN MTA obsolete kit was handed on to the federation army.

@@PremierHistory that's OK. I'm not sure to be honest. If it was the case, it was likely to have been early 90s, not kosovo. A lot happened and it's years ago. I saw a lot of old kit from many countries, still in action. This included hellcat tank destroyers, shermans and many T34. Good video, I might drop and watch some more. Keep it up.

The M24's were used exclusively by the ARVN and had been left behind by the French in the 1950's. By the early 1960's they were well worn out and difficult to maintain. Just having an engine rebuilt could take a year and they had to be shipped to Japan for that. Parts were becoming difficult to acquire as they were no longer in the U.S. supply chain. M41's were welcome replacements not so much for improved protection, firepower or performance but because they were at least current.

Thanks Fitz! Not really what you want is it having to be sent overseas just to be repaired, luckily there were plenty of alternatives the US had for themselves

just imagine the level off destruction 'IF' The ONTOS Was equipped with an autoloader for its six 106mm recoilles rifles.. with a twin or QUAD .30Cal MGs or .50Cal HMG's with AP-l or HE-Incindiary ammo or mounted with a twin 20mm Oerlikon autocannon or has a twin 40mm Grenade Launcher as its secondary gun!! Imagine they open up all sixes of its 106 & its twin or quad whatever Calibre off its secondary guns theyve mounted at that time altogether!! "THUNDERSTRUCK!!" Hell yeah!!! I served in Nam with the 5th division, 177 armor on the DMZ. You are so wrong about crew size of an M48, 4 is max, commander, gunner, loader, driver and that's it. Where does 5th crewman fit in? I had two tanks totaled during my tour, "love juice: was taken out by an rpg near Khe Sanh and "cheap thrills" was lost to a 200 pound mine near Con Thien. Tanks were great in Nam but the NVA had many ways to take us out also. RIP Bill Christianson, "Bad moon" Ron Risen and Doc Bill Kester.

Welcome home Bro!! I was a Tank Commander with A Co., 1/77. Ran many ops out of A-4. C-2, the rockpile and FSB Vandergrift. I was in on Operation Lam Som 719 down Hwy 9 to the Laotian border. I don'[t ever recall, as the narrator said carrying any AP rounds. Only anti-tank round we carried was HEAT, which worked well against bunkers too. We also carried HE, with the delay fuse, WP, beehive, and mainly jungle busting canister. And a WHOLE lot of .50 cal for Ma Deuce, packed to the gills in the bustle rack and the front fenders. I insisted upon keeping my Fire Control system in tip top shape, because I knew that one day the NVA just across the 17th parallel was gonna come busting through with a whole mess of T-54 tanks, and our superior range finding set-up and optics would give us a long range advantage. They sure did come, only they waited until the US left to do it. The ARVN's did a pretty good number on them though with the M-48'[s that we left to them until they ran out of ammo and spare parts. One of the most famous images of the end of the war is that NVA T-54 crashing through the gates of the Presidential palace in Saigon. Guerilla war my ass!!!

The image at 4:45, if you've seen that yeah silly movie, "Tank Girl", with the umbrella on her top cluttered tank? When I see pics like this at 4:45 I have to wonder if the creators of Tank Girl didn't also do some tank image looking when designing their props. The craft the show people have is drawing the things of real life into an entertaining fiction; that's how we recognize ourselves on stage. These guy's umbrella is cooler than Tank Girl's. Hers' didn't have fringe.
