I came here expecting to see my style in action (tai chi). I felt like he was going to win before even watching the video. The first couple of rounds I felt like he was playing with the boxer, I even kept saying "stop playing with him!". Then I I felt like the reason he was fighting like that in the first place was because he didn't really know what he was doing even though he was pulling off some of my moves, badly, but he managed. and Then he got 'serious' I still feel like he could've done better. I don't wanna say he's a 'one hit pony' but compared to me he is.

TaiChi is mild based martial art. What that mean is that they teaches you the basic of everything, but only the basic. So, Tai Chi in the ring is all using basic techniques that is going to be pretty hard. If you are fighting free style and just adding those technique to your free style fight you be fine. But if you are fighting in accordance to a style, that is hard. I used to do Taekwondo. While doing it I also learn some mild based martial art. I don't think I will do too well using Mild based against a professional fighter.

The taiji guy is doing well despite having his hands wrapped. Literally half the techniques in taiji cannot be done with hand coverings. There is a heavy reliance on reading your opponent through the palms and fingers. A lot of the techniques require your wrists to be free as well.

The Taiji guy wasn't cocky. He's just very chilled out, and not worried about the outcome of the fight. I don't know the background of either fighter, but it's obvious that the boxer was very tensed up and fidgety, which severely limited his ability to pose a threat to the Taiji guy.

To me it was clear that tai chi fella was the better fighter. It sucks that he didn't take the fight seriously though, if he fought the three rounds like in the third, actually having a guard and using his kicks it would have been very one sided. Also I would have expected him to work better in the pocket, sticking to his oponent, that's what tai chi is alla bout, but hey great to see someone using the art actually having a clue about fighting.

What fight did u watch bro? Tai chi guy was hit right on the button multiple times. If it wasn’t for the big gloves and what was supposed to be a sparring match, he would hv been KOed by round 2. The only reason he won round 3 was because the boxer gassed. So no, the tai chi guy wasnt clearly the better fighter. Also: the “boxer” looks like nothing more than a very good boxing student, not a pro/amateur boxer. In any case, it was a good fight and credit to the tai chi guy for keeping his cool

@@austinsavage I don't know bro, the first two rounds the tai chi dude wasn't doing much and eating punches for underestimating his oponent and even still, he survived both rounds without being knocked out nor eating every single punch the boxer threw. He actually had decent head movement. He wasn't any master nor was a perfect round but in the third when he actually started to fight back he won that one. Landed many kicks, a knee, punches and even grappled a bit, while slipping just as many punches as the rounds before. He obviously wasn't taking the fight seriously until then. Unless the boxer was holding himself back, I don't see another reason as to why he didn't end the fight at any point in the first or second round.

Moral of the story: most important punch is the jab. Grapplers should prioritise it to mask takedown attempts. Strikers should prioritise it for the openings it creates. Just so many good things about the jab. I believe its the failure of society that the humble jab is sometimes looked down upon Edit: and taichi guy used his "lazy" jab to signal to boxer that he better not stand in this distance. Respect to the tai chi guy. I think this proves one of my thoughts on when people talk about boxers being far more effective than traditional martial artists. I think it’s true when you’re comparing a decent boxer with a tai chi chaun practitioner but when you compare a boxing hobbyist with a tai chi chaun practitioner the old arguments about the holes in boxing (unable to deal with kicks, not being able to handle takedowns, etc) make sense

I do not much about the fighters. But my advice to the boxer would to focus on the fundamentals: guard up, chin down, throw jabs to gauge the distance and throw straights with the power hand. And depending on the boxer's style of fighting or ability, I would tell him to "march down" his Tai Chi opponent and use his footwork to close the distance and work in his hooks and uppercuts. Especially when the his opponent's hands were down. Do not be confused and simply put pressure on him. But props to the Tai Chi opponent for staying cool under pressure and picking his shots. As well as his variety of striking techniques including the knees, kicks, and takedown attempt. His training in other martial arts truly shows.

I've done a fair amount of tai chi myself, I would have landed a lot of front kicks early on. The boxer had poor distance control and often got himself caught in the clinch. When someone starts wailing hooks, uppercuts, and overhands best TaiJiQuan technique is the front heel kick down the open centre. Worked great in a sanshou fight I had against a choy li fut fighter. Against that choy li fut guy, he often left his left ribs open after punching so I altered the taijiquan front kick into a roundhouse kick. Stepping to my left and catching his right haymaker punch thing (they love those in choy li fut) then fanned my hands out to clinch my right hand to his neck and deliver a right round house kick to the left ribs. This way I was stepping across to throw the kick with all my mass while simultaneously blocking the strike. Good tai chi practitioners have to be intelligent, its evidently not about being tough and externally powerful. I only recommend it if you find a good teacher and have prior experience in other styles.

Young Guy, out of nowhere starts mocking Tai Chi Guy and Tai Chi in general, and challenges the Tai Chi Guy and his students to fight. Tai Chi Guy responds something like: *sigh* "If I agree to fight you, will you go away and let me teach class?". Young Guy: "Hehe, yeah, old man, let's do this!" and put his dukes up. Tai Chi Guy: "No no no. You challenged me! That means I get to pick the time and place. We're going on 'Viet Street Beefs'!" Young Guy pales. Tai Chi Guy, points at Young Guy's buddies: "You're not going to back down in front of them, are you?" Young Guy: "No, man! Any day, any time!" Tai Chi Guy pointing at Young Guy's friends: "Which one of you is going to be his Second? If he doesn't show, I get to fight you instead. You? Okay, now exchange phone numbers with my assistant here." Tai Chi Guy to Young Guy: "Okay, then. We'll fight as soon as the arrangements are made. Have a nice day!"

Would like to see with a boxer who has same reach, basically since boxer is shorter he is trying to swing a hook as he rushes forward, if he could keep doing jab-cross the tai chi guy wouldn't be able to stand cool like that, i mean tahi chi guy is still getting punched but he can crouch and hug which keeps the damage to minimum and mostly to the body Edit: the boxer doesnt keep "eating" the jabs, the jabs doesnt pass his guard. But what he should do is instead of just blocking he should slip and do a counter punch since tai chi guys hands are down he would actually "eat" every counter pucnh and the reach difference would be solved

Would have liked to have seen more kicks out of the Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) guy. Every form has front-loaded ball kicks (or "teep"), great for an opponent who is staying too far out, like the boxer is. Some abdomen shots would've been good; TCC has a bunch of those. No grappling makes TTC much less effective, but I would've like to have seen less countering and more entering/exiting footwork. TCC practitioner should be getting their opponent into the wall, and letting out short range punches. Having a strat for an environ like this must be challenging, props to them both for putting it all in there.

The boxer is not throwing jabs because most local boxing clubs in Vietnam are not very good on teaching technique and strategy. The better ones that have good coaching are usually much more exclusive than what's accessible to the general populace.

I don't get it: If we think in Taichi as a combative art, is not a straiking but a grappling art, so why you would use it like some kind of "striking kung fu style"? I think the first thing practitioners must do to make their TMA work, it's to understand for what your art is made for and for what no. The second thing they should do is to take lessons of some full contact striking art (like Box or Sanda). Learn how to fight, how to get hit and how to hit, how angles work, etc. Then you can take all this experience and adding it to your TMA. So for example, if you do Wing Chun, don't waste your time fighting against WC attacks, but against jab, cross, hooks, 1-2 combinations, etc.
