It is just that before entering Karasuno he was still psychologically weak, he was the "King" and his traumas "restrained" his potential. Karasuno helped him grow as a person, while Shiratorizawa couldn't have. It is not really a setting skill issue (because Kageyama always had been a good setter), it is a matter of mental growth. What Ushijima told him i that back then, his style play was too egocentric, not that wouldn't fit Shiratorizawa, but that wouldn't fit volleyball in general (which is the real purpose of the idea)

What I love from this anime is that the characters actually FAIL! They get their own motivation and not only because of that they are instantly pros and do incredible things. They get motivation, they try and fail until success. Wow this anime is amazing.

I love that too and I wish we got to see more of that in anime. Hikaru no Go was another one (you, know... When the ghost wasn't looking over his shoulder telling him what to do) where you could see the protagonist fail and work to get better over time.

If you think about the timing of the spike, that's the really the most impressive part. Normally a spiker jumps *after* the tosser sets the ball, so that the spiker knows where to jump and hit as the ball comes down. Hinata jumps well before the Kageyama sets the ball which really fucks with a defense's sense of timing

This anime has no shounen super power stuff. Straight real life volleyball. This is what makes haikyu great. You experience adversities one after the other and there are no shortcuts for people not born with greatness (Hinata). This is why it is the biggest masterpiece of sports anime genre ever. The manga just ended. Furudate san ended it like a GOAT.
