Steve Halford shows how he creates his unique style of Raku Pottery, which he titled Fushiana Raku. Steve talks about his techniques and how he designs, glazes and fires these incredible pieces. Raku technique is essentially when glazed ceramics are taken from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot and are then placed in a material that would be able to catch fire, such as sawdust. This technique is used to starve the piece of oxygen, which creates a myriad of colors within the glaze.

I love doing the varied forms of raku, including Obvara. I too am suprised that the vessel didn't break in the snow. As I live in the desert southwest (Phoenix), I don't have the chance to experiment working with the snow. I've seen several artists encourage the glaze to crack more by blowing on the piece, using compressed air (more pricise), or even spritzing water with a sprayer on the piece before putting in the reduction container. I'm really inspired by your artwork, and plan on doing something with geometric shapes and colors as well. There are colored waxes that you can buy on the internet (I use Mr Marks Wax On), that you can use instead of mixing your own: but I do prefer nice black lines, which is easier for me to see the contrast. Keep up the great work, and thank you for this inspiring video. John
