Just a slight correction, Ice is Eddard's only sword. He fought Jaime with it in s01e05, Jaime's is also a two hander. Valyrian steel swords are so highly valued for their added combat power. They can hold a much sharper edge than normal swords and can cut or pierce things that other swords can't. If you owned a Valyrian steel sword it would make no sense to fight with a different weapon.

+Paul Anthony Hi, the sword used in that fight is still supposed to be Ice. If you do an image search for screen caps you can see the hilt, pommel, quillons and blade shape are identical. The way the scene is filmed it's hard to tell if a smaller version of the prop was used specifically for the action shots in that scene. Whenever Sean Bean wears the sword on his belt it's definitely the full sized Ice, including just before he draws it to fight Jaime.

+Paul Anthony You're absolutely right. It's clearly visible when Eddard draws Ice from the wolfskin scabbard held out by Theon. I confess I am surprised and somewhat baffled. The sword on Eddards waist is clearly modeled on Ice - there are some very clear shots of the pommels in the beheading scene and they seem very similar- but the quillons are shorter. There is no mention in the books of a secondary sword and I don't think there is an in show explanation? The secondary sword is still very large with a two handed grip and Eddard has to wear it very high on his belt. The hilt protrudes a fair bit ahead of his body and still rises nearly to his chest. I don't know why HBO would take Eddard's signature weapon away for a very similar slightly smaller one.

moogy76 It's better explained in the books that Ice is a "CEREMONIAL" blade used only for certian rituals such as executions. Eddard has never once been noted to have used Ice in any battle, just as Robb used only a bastard sword during his reign as head of the house, but still had Ice with him. Which is how Tywin got his hand on Ice.
