I've been thinking about this idea for about a month. I don't have the material, tools, or need to build one right now. However I was thinking about running a small hydroponic vegetable garden linked to a fish tank... And of course somebody's already thought of and created this overflow device. It's elegant and even solves one of the problems I hadn't figured out yet. I'm always slightly disappointed and also rather excited every time I come up with something only to find somebody's already made a better version of it.

Good video. Some people attach the air hose to a power head in the sump to keep the vacuum or restart the psiphon when the power comes back on. I am sure you know this is for other readers
@FishmanEricRussell5 жыл бұрын
If you leave the air line in the outside box it actually performs the same function. That little bit of head is enough. Thanks for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts

Awesome! It's just easier to drill the hole, fit a drain pipe into it, and attach the drain hose! Personally, either way, I would wrap some screening around the intake to the HOB overflow to keep my fish from being pulled out the same way I wrap the intakes of my HOB filters... Especially if you have fry and/or very small fish! Great Build, Though!!! :-)
@PerplexiaX4 жыл бұрын
@Brian Roberts Well I don't know about everything, I'm just saying that yes, it would be much easier if you COULD just drill a hole at the level you want, but my main point is putting on some kind of safeguard so that you don't lose your fish. I just use simple window screening! It's woven pretty small, and allows the water through without bringing anything else in! Oh, and Thank You for your response , and I wish you a good night! Now, if you'll excuse me, my bed beckons me! Yeah, been a Long day! lol :-)

Hi could you tell me what thickness should I use to make a flat tank lid.i made a lid for my betta tank out of 5mm acrylic and it keeps bowing I've tried to brace it but it still bows. by the way another wicked build.john UK.
@PalJoey-rm2yh5 жыл бұрын
What I can't get an answer on, mainly because most people use these inside overflow boxes, is what happens if you just drill a hole an inch from the top of the aquarium and attach the bulk head and hose down to the sump and a screen inside the aquarium to prevent the fish from passing through. The return from the sump (above the water line to prevent back flows) would fill the tank and push more water down to the sump. The simplest system as I envision it and no ugly box inside the aquarium. Is it a noise issue? Or am I not accounting for something?
@raypimienta76705 жыл бұрын
I think its because ppl tend to redo there tanks and change things around. once you drill a tank your pretty much committed to it.

tks for the great build. wondering if you extend the inside box to touch the bottom of the tank and flip your drainage grate to the bottom, top of the box flush with the top of the tank, outside box the same; will this act as a vacuum system to pull debris off the floor of the tank? maybe one or two slots in the top to act as a skimmer then the rest of the flow through the bottom. will this work? or will it just overflow the tank?
@FishmanEricRussell3 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it! Unfortunately you can't suck water from the bottom with this style of overflow

Very cool. I'm trying to understand the risk if you get air into the "U" pipe. I'm thinking if enough gets in the siphon is broke and you would have a tank overflow?
@FishmanEricRussell3 жыл бұрын
An air block results in an overflow only if you pump water into a HOB. If you are pumping it out, all that happens is it will run dry.

I wondered how those worked. Thanks again How would you build a HOB diverter? Is there a way to have it end in a spray bar or something floating plant friendly?
@FishmanEricRussell5 жыл бұрын
Thank you I'm glad you liked it. The easy way of putting a spray bar on a HOB is to reverse how the water goes through it. Instead of using a pump to pump water into the filter use the pump to pump water out. Then all you need to do is attach a spray bar system to the output. Hope this helps and thanks for watching
@Sue.57765 жыл бұрын
@@FishmanEricRussell Course the easy way won't work in my situation. The HOB is on a shrimp tank and is a recent purchase to replace the in tank pump that was decimating baby shrimp. Any other simple ideas for directing flow from a HOB? Thank you.

I'm thinking of crossing this with your matten filter with a slim sump same height as the tank to stop Guppiy fry passing through with a course sponge at the top of the matten for safety and possibly using float switches in the tank and sump for extra safety with a auto top up from container underneath 🤞

My issue with drilling is I have 4 10 gallon tanks and from what I hear drilling 10 gallon tanks is a nightmare because of how thin the glass is

It is possible. You need to fully support the back though. Commercial tanks use very thin glass.
