Viewers REACT to Washer Stink Video!

It wasn’t too many months ago we produced a video on front loader washers and how to eliminate that stink that occurred many times. There was a very strong reaction from our viewer family, with comments ranging from the passionate, informative, emotional, and the obscene. Wow, who knew that people were so engaged with the topic of laundry?
This episode is for those that are either leaning towards getting a front loading washer model or already have one and want to get the best results from it and want to know how to best care for your machine. It does an important task in your home, so how do you repay the favor and take care of it?
One of the benefits of this social media platform is the interaction and sharing of information. Many of you gave some GREAT insights back to us that we’ll pass along to your fellow viewers in this episode.

I’m a mold-a-phobe, probably because I’ve had mold toxicity before. I like my front loader (Maytag), and have had it for years. Plus, I’m too tiny to get the clothes out of a top loader! I’ve NEVER had a smell from it. I clean my washer top drawer when I can (have a broken arm), and vinegar kills mold (bleach only removes stains), but the mold comes back. I use oxi-clean a lot, and I only use the minimum amount of detergent. I also leave my door open a bit when not in use.

Jay, here is another good tip. When you pull the Landry detergent tray out, look at inside with a flash light at the ceiling of the tray slot and you will find tons of mold and mildew in there. Took me about 2 hours to clean it when I first discovered it. Nobody ever bothers to look at the ceiling they normally just look down the detergent reservoir well.

As he said they air themselves out better, but my MIL always propped her door open anyway. They do collect lint and gunk between the perforated drum that you put the clothes in and the outer drum. You just cannot see it unless you take it apart. It is kind of gross.

I have used my front load machine since 2004 and I love it!!! I have soft water and I use liquid Gain that I get from Costco which comes with it's own dispenser cup, I use less than 1/8th inch in bottom of cup. I also use Melaleuca liquid Softener, I add a little water to the dispenser and add about 1 1/2 teaspoons of softener to it. For Whites I use I scoop of Oxyclean in main soap dispenser. My clothes are always clean, bright and fresh smelling. I have never had an odor from the machine, but I do leave the door open. The biggest mistake you can make is following detergent amounts for use, much, much less will do a better job every time and will not leave a stinky residue in your machine. I just watched this the other day and said wow I'm going to use Vinegar in my front loader. Two days later I received the September 2020 issue of Consumer Reports and they had an article called 8 Vinegar No-Nos. They wrote the following. "Vinegar is sometimes used as a fabric softener or to get rid of stains and odors in the laundry, but it can damage [or even melt} the rubber seals and hoses in some washing machines, causing leaks. One expert we spoke with said front-loaders can be especially susceptible." Just wanted to share.

Same reason why vinegar isn't recommended for flushing expresso machines. At the end of the day, vinegar is an acid. A weak acid, but a acid nonetheless. If you use a bit from time to time in the fabric softener compartment, then it wouldn't hurt anything as it's diluted. What I find with people is they think more is better which is the opposite for he machines. Who knows how much they use?

Jay Q we have recently come across evidence that using dishwasher powder to clean your washer is very effective in removing stink and black goo. The reason is because dishwasher detergent is made to remove animal fats from food on plates and utensils. The same type of fats can come from clothes through sweat, deodorants, working, etc. To clean the washer, put dishwasher detergent in the soap dispenser (remove the cup for powders) and wash without any clothes on the hottest water setting. @@DirtFarmerJay Hello Sir. You are not answering the Vinager concern of Jay Q in anyway; obviously you know that Vinager and clothing washing are NOT to be mixed. A low PH acidity chemical will indeed ruin internal tubing. Other than the above, I found your videos highly informative. Thank you.

I haven't run any tests but I am highly skeptical of acetic acid having that capacity, especially when diluted. So how many washers have you seen this happen to?. I'd like empirical evidence not opinion.

@@tonicrpo377 I have been using vinegar in my front loader for 10 years at least and so far no apparent leaks. I rarely have to fix anything on it either. My only problems I have had is the stopping up of the drain (washing rubber backed rugs screwed me up) and the front door is rusting at the bottom on the OUTSIDE! No idea why it is rusting on the outside. I have not fixed that yet. So far it still works.

HI Jay, wow we've had our 8kg LG for over ten years just love it! BUT some times like you said some towels and stuff do get a bit 'stinky to say the least. Would you believe in all that time ive pulled out the drawer and cleaned it but never looked down the 'hole' where it came out of, thanks to your video I did, yuk absolutely disgusting as you can imagine after 10 years! This is great! I recently got a replacement washer, after my 18 month old washer failed and was out of stock. The new washer is a different brand and much more complex, with two washers in one machine. I had to make a split decision when I chose the replacement washer, and while waiting for it to arrive, I was startled by the number of negative customer reviews. Reviews of the washer were filled with complaints about leaking and oversudsing issues, which prompted me to learn as much as possible about the washer before use. I've been careful to use only the minimum amount of detergent per load for each of the two washers on my machine, but occasionally the bottom washer will stop working and gives a Suds error. It has also given an error to Clean Filter. So far, the top washer has worked perfectly using the manufacturer instructions for detergent and load size. While I appreciate such a high end washing machine, and the cleanest laundry I've ever enjoyed, I have to admit my old German made front load washer which I used for 12 years, never had issues with stink or needed a filter cleaning, it was just too small for my current needs. It's a little embarrassing how much I didn’t know about washing machines, and detergent. Thanks for this video. I'm throwing out my fabric softener. How disgusting, especially since I'm vegetarian. I'll switch to powder detergent too. I like it better but didn't know how to use it in the front loader.

ThanksI It's a step in the right direction. I checked with the LG website and here is what they quoted in their FAQ section: "Run a tub clean cycle using either a cup of bleach or vinegar. DO NOT mix both bleach and vinegar, as this will create a toxic chlorine gas. Pour the bleach into the liquid bleach compartment, or pour the vinegar directly into the wash tub, and press the TUB CLEAN button."

For all of you who find that front loads are a lot of work and/or believe top loads are the way to go, Jay Q is right top loads have major build up in them, and the new ones are based off of front loads just tipped up. That build up that you can't see will eventually leave dark spots on clothes, you know it's going to happen to your nice new white sheets. Never use pods, the problem with them is one out of ten won't dissolve properly, if it goes in the dryer you get a lovely melted plastic on your clothes. I've had several customers getting new septic systems because they used pods. Use powder detergent only, do not use fabric softener, if you wonder why your towels stink all the time it's because the tallow or fat in fabric softener is deteriorating on them. You have to buy new towels then. Read the warning label on your fabric softener next time, you will be surprised what it says. Keep up with the informative videos guys!

Great video. I inherited a front load washer but do find all the extra draining, drying, airing out to just add to my list of household tasks and at some point will let go of this front load washer. I do drain it after every few washes, leave the door open but did not know about the sealings and wiping them clean. More work.... I have no smell nor taste (anosmia) so concerned about the cultivating and build up of smells/ mustiness. The irony of it all is one would think that appliances are to eliminate work, making household cleaning easier and not adding or creating the worry of smells by using it. Since you cannot smell, I'd recommend a monthly tub clean with no clothes, hottest water and use DISHWASHER powder in the detergent dispenser (remove the cup meant for liquid detergent). 1/4 to 1/2 cup is plenty.

I got my wife stop using fabric softeners in our front load and that eliminated the smell. Our laundry room smelled terrible and couldn't get rid of it no matter what I tried. Did my own research and came to the conclusion it was the softener made with animal fats! Those fats get deposited on the back of the drum and I couldn't get rid of it. Bought a new front load and haven't had a problem since. We also wipe the door and door seal off between loads. One other thing I do which is a pain but I think it works better is I fill empty laundry bottle like the purple on in the video with water and set on top of the machine over top of the dispenser draw. As soon as the machine is satisfied with it's fill and starts washing I open the door and release another gal or so of water. I don't think these things have enough water in the tub. Works good for me!

I adjusted the screw that controls the amount of water to allow twice as much or more. I can see the water line while my washer is washing almost half way up the "porthole". My clothes are clean because of the adjustment I made which allows enough water to actually clean/rinse my clothes.

I found your videos while searching for an easier way to get to that tight spot on my LG front loader's door gasket and the lip of of tub to clean and dry it after each load. I always dry the large part of the rubber boot and leave the door open but the odor persists so I figured that hard to get to spot was the source of the smell. I was proud of myself that I know to drain the tub as you demonstrated but I only do it every few months because we don't do an enormous amount of laundry. But when I saw the clear water that drained from your machine- yikes. When I drain the pump at the bottom it looks like the La Brea tar pits with black goo that oozes out- DUH! I'd love to run a vinegar cycle as you suggested but I hesitate because our washer water goes in to your grey water system and directly on to trees and plants, but I will drain the tub more often now. One valuable tip to add- make sure after removing and cleaning the black plastic pump filter, twist and tighten the filter securely. I was concerned that I'd mess something up if I twisted it too much when reinserting, but if it's not tight-tight you'll return to a lovely kiddie pool in your laundry room during your next wash cycle. thanks.

I owned and used top loader washing machines for about 20 years. Then I decided to try a front loader about 20 years ago and have not gone back to top loaders. Thank you for the great cleaning tips and for showing us how to use parts on our washers. Can you do one on how to clean the front loading dryers?

We bought an LG 4000 series washer and dryer about a year ago and just love it! They are fantastic machines all around and we've had zero stink/mold/mildew issues. We always use the magnetic hold-open feature but I never thought to leave the soap drawer ajar. Been super careful to use minimal detergent and NEVER use fabric softener or dryer sheets. PS- just bought some Swash to try out- thanks for the recommendation.

We have a Whirlpool Duet front load and we simply follow the instructions that came with the machine. We run the 'clean washer' cycle, monthly, with 3/4 cup of regular (not concentrated) bleach. We also leave the door open between washes and we wipe out the bottom of the bellows after load or so. The washer never smells. One time we ran the clean cycle using 3/8 cup of Clorox concentrated bleach and it was total disaster. If foamed so much that the suds were coming out all over.

I have this exact machine and one thing you didn’t mention is the door. You don’t have to leave it open all the way to air it out. You can close it just a little where it’s not fully open but open enough to allow air to pass through between washes. It shows that feature in the instruction manual. Also I think there is a pull out in the manual attached to a suction cup that you can leave attached to the outside of the machine and there’s some good quick reference tips there. That is how I showed my kids how to do their own laundry. They would refer to it in the beginning until they got used to how the machine works. Great video!

Happy New! Appreciate your channel, topical content and both your personal and communal insight. Regardless of owning the same make and model of your unit along with dryer, I didn't invest in pedestals. With my wife and I towering at 5'6" thought ease of loading/unloading and having storage so low that it was counterproductive to elevating. I was shortsighted in not recognizing the value of gravity and ease for following the manufacturer instructions regarding the, "drain and clean trap every 2 weeks" located at very bottom. Never occurred to raise unit until I saw your video. Duh on me, but grateful just the same for your video sir! Great tips learned today.

Fabric softener sheets only add a whole 'nother problem to your laundry day - they 'coat' the mesh screen the lint adheres to, thus causing the mesh screen to clog so no air can get through it (nor water if you take it to your sink to test that), thus causing a HUGE fire hazard. ALSO, clean, or get cleaned, the dryer ducting system from your dryer to where it exits your house. This can also add to a huge fire hazard if ignored for too long of a time. (If you are building a house, make sure the laundry room is situated in the house so the dryer ducting system has a short trip to the exterior point of the house - much easier for a DIY dryer duct cleaning than one with a LONG way to go before it exits the house, and way less of a headache to do the job!)

I do most of the things that DirtFarmer did (wiping the washer out) but the key remedy is, you only shut the door when your washing. So after I wash I leave the door all the way open for the rest of the day. Then I leave the door open a couple of inches and there's never any order.

@@Neenerella333 I was leaving the door open a few inches but I was still getting an odor. Now I leave it open all the way and it's fine. If you can't leave your door open I would try setting a bowl of baking soda inside. I have read that it absorbs mold, mildew and moisture. Good luck.

Some brands rinse the tray area to remove the product. Unfortunately this means you have to remove the drawer every time to get rid of all the water. If the clip is strong, I'd recommend removing the drawer and leaving it out to dry at the end of every day's washing.

Thank you for the informative video. It never occurred to me to return to powered detergent. I, like others who have commented, leave the door open for a couple of days and I also regularly wipe the door seal, especially after washing outdoor work clothes. I'm going to experiment with using less detergent. I came to your station to watch your video on aerating a lawn and ended up learning some valuable things about washing machine maintenance. :-)

Use Swash concentrate instead of powders

You have to make sure you wipe away the water that collects at the bottom of the door seal, after every wash and leave the door open slightly. I have stopped using fabric softener as this seemed to collect in the drawer over time. I stopped using gel for the same reason. Also, someone I had to look at my machine years ago said it was better to just put powder directly into the machine with the clothes. Doing this prevents any build up in the drawer. I haven't had a problem with a smelly machine for years.

Thanks for your comments, Monica. We've found that vinegar also does a good job as a fabric softener. You don't need much especially if you also have a water softener. We've completely switched to powdered detergent and a small of amount of it as well. Best to you and your family. DFJ

Hi DFJ, TY for this and the previous video about how to cure front loader "stankiness"! Great word! LOL! We have a Whirlpool front load washer that is about 2 years old. In the past couple of weeks, the tub has been smelling musty. We have always wiped the inside of the door. We always take the detergent drawer out and set it on its side inside the tub. But I had not cleaned the rubber gasket in the door area. And had not paid any attention to the drawer area. And we had not cleaned the filter for a while. So. I folded the gasket back but there was next to nothing inside. But I wiped it anyway. Pulled out the drawer but it was clean too. And the top over the drawer was also clean. The filter had nothing in it but there was a little scum around the top so I washed it with soap and water and ran a soft brush inside the filter canal. I'm going to try the detergent powder and vinegar in place of softener and will report sometime later my results. Thanks again to you and your many viewers for such helpful comments.

I had a Maytag Neptune set for 20 years and loved them. We decided to go with the European compact set this time. I believe that the front loaders got a bad reputation because at the same time we (in the USA) were going to the much more water efficient front loaders, the industry also switched to ultra dense liquid detergents and softeners. They are like pudding in the washer! I like your idea of using powder detergent. I have been keeping bottles to dilute my liquid product 50/50 with water before setting them in the laundry room. Great information, sir. You describe the issues very well.

The LG washer is one of the best out there! The easiest way to keep it clean and not smelling…run a sanitary load with bleach weekly. We usually do a sanitary load of white towels and bleach with an extra rinse. No problems, no smell!! We also have hard water, and do a tub clean every couple months with a 1/2 gallon of vinegar. No problems!! Machine is almost 10 yrs old. It’s definitely a work horse! Enjoy and happy washing ✌️❤️🙏

Thank you for your time and information! I have a frontloader (now) and have had toploaders all my life. This one was used, but in great condition. We noticed a foul smell and I knew right what it was. I had opened plenty of the TL's to clean them out due to pet hair, dirt, etc., so yeah, that's a smell that stays with ya!Hahaa! I just had no idea how to open one up to clean. Your videos have saved me many hours of hunt, peck, (possibly break) and fix..lol.. Thanks again!!

Everyone that I know that has a front loader complains about the odor but I’ve never had a problem and I always thought it was because I still use powdered tide, I don’t use softener and I leave the door open after use. Hope that helps.

Being a Brit I’ve always used front loaders. However, I have never experienced such stink as I get with my LG machine. Always had Bosch or Hotpoint prior to the LG and never had an issue with stink. My clothes come out smelling worse than when they went in and I’m continually having to do the tub clean cycle/clean filter/clean drawer/clean seal and only use powder. It is definitely more of an issue on LG machines in my opinion.

My partner decided to clean the washing powder dispenser as it had powder build up. He believes in reducing work whereever possible. He simply stuck it into the dishwasher with the next load of dishes. Worked very well.

You forgot to mention that you should always leave the door cracked open the LG front load washer shown in this video has a magnetic part that will leave the door cracked open without shutting it all the way. Leave your washer door cracked open. I always take out the dispenser and dry out the inside and shake the dispenser outside and let it dry out and I also take a paper towel and get any extra water that's in the doorsill dried. I hope this helps you keep your front loader fresh and stink free

I got my front loader about 3 months ago. And I have the stink problem. And by watching you're videos & it seems there is a whole lot of extra work that goes with it. I thought this suppose to make my life easier? U. showed about 6 or more areas that need to be cleaned just to get odor out. I'm not sure how I feel bout this machine now.🤔

I have always just left my front loader washer door slightly open and have had no oder problems. Commercial washer cleaners are just citric acid. So I just bought some citric acid powder and run the washer with no clothes and hot water with about a shot-glass of citric acid tossed into the drum. You can also get citric acid at the canning section of your supermarket. Because I have hard water I use liquid detergent and don't think powdered detergent gets desolved very well. But while I use liquid detergent I also drop about an ounce of Borax in the tub and I find there is much less film left on the door and clothes. I do not use any softeners because it leaves a film on your clothes. Ever wonder why your soft bath towels don't absorb water and dry you very well? Front loaders are the best way to go or as you pointed out hospitals and hotels wouldn't use them.

DFJ, thank you so much for this video. When I have to read manuals, my brain automatically shuts off, but watching what is needed is far more beneficial to me! I use small amounts of liquid detergent, I think it's from Myers and has essential oils in it for my unmentionables. I have also switched to using Tide for everything else. For 19 years I had a front loader and grew to hate it. I swore I would never own another. In the last year of my owning it, the rubber boot was so bad, I couldn't stand it. I couldn't leave it open all the time, as I told I was supposed to do because the light would always stay on. My husband rigged it so that a binder clip pressed against the switch would shut it off, yay! I couldn't get the mold out of the rubber and then shortly thereafter, the machine was telling me it was in trouble of failing. When I bought my beautiful new top loader with matching dryer, I discovered it wouldn't work in my laundry area because there was a vent hose encased in a box all along the wall to its exit that prevented me from opening the lid. Back it went and I ended up with the front loader yet again and was very unhappy. The machine is so modern... who needs to run it on Wi-Fi, seriously? UGH! After owning this machine for 8 months, we were driven to edge of insanity with this horrible mold smell. We tried so hard to locate that awful smell, when one day when my daughter came over, I asked her to investigate. She bent her head down and said, "It's your machine!" "No, that machine is only 8 months old!" I commented.... She told me that was how her machine smells and she has a top loader! We found your videos and are so happy.... I did the two cups of vinegar on the tub clean cycle.... also cleaned out both drawers you had demonstrated. There was barely anything there. The water was pretty rank however. Now, the laundry room barely smells at all.... Imagine how awful it was on 100 degree days with very high humidity and no air conditioning!!!! Thanks again for your thoughtfulness!

Thanks for your thoughtful commentary. One of the main culprits we have found in front load washer stink is when people use liquid detergents and fabric softeners because both contain tallow which is an animal bi-product that can gather and rot in small, enclosed areas. I had an LG too loader for 8 years. The constantly having to wipe it after every use was horrible, even keeping door open it didn’t dry inside at all and it always had a bad smell. I used vinegar constantly and wiped it down. I have a new top loader and all I have to do is keep door open after use and it dries. Front loader washes the same as top loader imo as I have used both.

I sold our top loader a year or so ago as we wanted to upgrade for a few reasons (it was 20 years old but still worked). It was always varying degree of stinky no matter what I tried. Had to take it apart to replace the top close switch and saw there was a good 1/4" of built up gunk on the back of the metal tub and on the plastic outer tub. No way to clean it without having disassembled it.

@@DirtFarmerJay Yes, though it was a challenge as only the LG would fit in the very narrow space they made for the washer dryer (and technically they don't given they can't be 6" away from the wall for the full metal dry vent). We do most of the items like wiping down the door and seal though we can't leave the door open fully due to the very narrow space (the hallway door clears it by half an inch). We do use liquid HE detergent but don't use softener it it. It prompts us to run a tub clean ever month or two that I've done (with bleach as that is what I had on hand, haven't tried the tub clean tablet things). No stinky yet but it has only been about 6 months. I would have gone with the new whirlpool front loader if it would have been a fit option. Specifically for the tech they implemented to automatically dry it out.

We’re in the process of purchasing a new washer and dryer. We very much want to do a front load so we have done a lot of research. In addition to watching great videos on KZbin videos (thank you for your!), we did was make a call to LG support with a list of specific questions. We first talked with customer support, then technical support. We were told by the customer support that LG will not honor the warranty if the customer has used vinegar in the machine. The reason given was that it is a corrosive that damages internal parts of the machine. Have you had any other comments on this subject?

Not heard that vinegar comment before. I use powdered detergent and use some Borax in the rinse cycle for softener. It works pretty good. Also use dryer sheets to further soften the clothes. I'm sold on the front loader technology. The proof is when you think of all the businesses that do laundry for a living (hotels, nursing homes, hospitals, etc) all use front loaders because the clothes/towels/bedding is cleaner when washed this way. I run a Extra Hot Heavy Load and fill all receptors with Clorox when odor comes. Don't know if better half will fly with powdered detergent. Always use white vinegar in the softner spot. So must be liquid detergent causing stink.

Thanks for watching and commenting Larry Schwartz. There is a door towards the bottom of the front of the washer that when opened, allows you to drain the tub with the rubber hose inside the door. Enjoyed both videos. What I need and am waiting to be discussed is what to do now that the large grey seal has grown black mildewy kind of stuff. Bleach? White vinegar? Is the only option to do an expensive replacement then do all your maintenance tips? Sadly, any serviceman will find a dryer stacked on top of the washer and "tucked' into a space.

Anna Ferree - thanks for being a part of our Viewer Family and taking time to write. We're glad we were of help you. Yes, Tide's product is just fine, as well as others (like OxyClean) like it. These are designed to clean the inner tub behind the tub you see when you open the door. You'll need to do this at least 2x a year, and in between, you'll need to keep the machine ventilated by propping the door open and pulling out the detergent/softener dispenser between wash days. We continue to have a very positive experience with our machine and are glad that you are having that same good experience. The only problem is when we have house guests and they use large amounts of detergent. We have to coach ongoing for both highly reduced amounts of dry detergent and diluted softener. Jacqueline - whatever you use to clean the seal, it needs to be applied, scrubbed with a sponge or brush (not anything that is abrasive - which will damage the seal over time), and then removed by rinsing and drying with a towel. Don't let product sit on the seal. You can try a mildew remover (Zep makes one and you can do a search with your browser - look for "mildew remover for rubber seals), or hot soapy water with some vinegar OR a little bit of bleach. I had great results with the vinegar solution and wiping out excessive moisture. My machine is older and the seal around the door is leaking so I am planning to replace the seal since the stink is gone. Previously I thought the machine was on its last legs and needed to be junked.

Found a tiny bit of powdered detergent under the dispenser drawer. Not really the smelly spot. That seems to be the filter for the pump in the lower compartment. It's been dried and cleaned after every load. Still smells.

From the video and what everyone is saying in the comments, whatever efficiency you get from these washers is thrown off by the need for extra hot water and bleach(which my septic system won't like very much) . We use cold water wash and no softeners ever. There's only two of us. My washer looks way cleaner( dispenser area, filter compartment, and rubber seal) than the one at your place Jay, but meanwhile ours smells, as I said above, mostly from that filter. Which is drained, cleaned and left open to dry after EVERY load. Doesn't that seem excessive?

Dineen, thanks for writing. Don't give up yet. I suspect it's the inner tub, the one behind the one you see when you open the door. Over time, biologicals from the laundry, as well as tallow-based laundry products (liquid detergent and liquid softener). The best way to clean this is to run the unit on the either the longest cycle with the hottest water available or if there is a "tub clean" setting, use that. You can use a readily commercially made product for this (Tide as well as OxyClean makes them and there are others as well), or a cup of bleach in a gallon of hot water put into the main tub. For any of these treatments, don't use any detergent or softener, nor put any type of load in the machine. If you have a particularly tough situation, you may need to do this twice. Also double check the inner seal around the door for "funk." I hope this helps! Best, DFJ

My apartment building put in new front loaders about 3 years ago. People keep putting the pods in the dispenser instead of throwing them in the tub with the clothes. They never completely dissolve, and we are always finding them in the dispenser or in the rubber door seal. They also put dry power soap in the dispenser and it never completely dissolves or washes out. I use a liquid detergent, and only use a small amount (#1 marking on the measure), and I fill the softener cup with white vinegar.

Philippe, thanks for watching and writing! If you do have the exact same model, you'll notice on the right side of the control panel there are four rectangular buttons. The one on the right says signal. To make use of this, you need to turn on the power to the machine, and rotate the main cycle knob until you've selected one of the types of washes. So, for instance, you could select delicates. When you do that, you can then push the signal button and you'll see indicators light up that give you the choice of a range from off to high. It's right in the panel above it. One of the actions you can choose is off. I hope this helps!
