So excited. Easily my GOTY, but Yahtz is going to absolutely take it to task and it's going to deserve every bit of it. I'm expecting a tirade about over-long games, some well-placed barbs about the inventory management system, and a few snarky remarks at the games industry for preemptively lowering our expectations for THEIR upcoming titles.

MFN is about a cynical world rejecting friendship and selflessness (being a good neighbor) ,the effects that has on society, and how those innocent Sesame Street style characters would react to being confronted by a violent, sad, lonely, isolationist world which thinks that helping someone out means setting yourself up to be taken advantage of.

Side note on "My Friendly Neighborhood": While it isn't outright stated, Gordon is heavily implied to be a war veteran, especially given his Purple Heart (medal for being wounded in battle) in his truck. This is also why he stops Ricky from talking about the war. So, yeah, a bum leg would explain the mobility issues.

Oh 100% -- having downer or "Eeyore" characters absolutely helps with 1) contrasting archetypes for easier comedic/dramatic writing, and 2) letting kids know "hey not everything _is_ or _has to be_ super-happy-fun-time all the time, it's ok to like. experience the full range of human emotions" lmao

@@CelestiaLily Probably explains why characters like that, including in other things like _Care Bears_ with Grumpy Bear, tended to be the characters I gravitated towards as long as they weren't too whiny. I mean, I'm now a grumpy asshole who hates people and is more cynical than Yahtzee, but it's the thought that counts. One of the nicest Eeyore moments I was reminded of is the episode where he's just sitting by himself at the top of a hill staring skyward, which everyone else interprets as being him being sad(der than usual). Only we find out by episode's end when they actually try to approach him that he's just quietly having some alone time in nature appreciating it and is confused why the others thought he was sad. That was nice.

The problem with the Jaws analogy is that by the time Jaws came around, studios had already moved away from most of the expensive historical epics thanks to films like Easy Rider, which cost less than half a million dollars, and made around $60 million. Also, Jaws was anything but a cheap production. It was budgeted at around $3.5 million, went wildly over budget and wound up costing about $9 million. It also went even more ridiculously over schedule, so the filming took about 3x longer than expected. Jaws wound up costing even more than The Man Who Would Be King, a historical epic more in-keeping with Yahtzee’s idea of an expensive production, which came out the same year. (Although, of course, Jaws wound up making lots more money and was ultimately more profitable, but not because it was cheaper and easier to produce.)

The "payoff" for My Friendly Neighborhood requires faffing about the game after the final boss to access and help the puppets you didn't in the main thread. Basically, beat the boss, then back up into the rest to 'fix' what's going wrong. Only once you've gotten around everything, does it truly unlock the final ending... which is really just a nicer version of the 'meh' ending you can get if you don't. The endings kinda needed some work, honestly, but that's really the only bad thing I can say about it.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree that MFN could have used just... a bit more. Not a lot, but something. And the end area being longer and adding a bit more lore or something may have been the bulk of what it needed. Bit more dialogue, like, say, between the puppets, to provide more individual personality / context. But what the game does do is done pretty darn well, I gotta give it that.
@SnivyTries

I think my biggest quibble about MFN was the fact that I knew it was a "mascot horror" style game, and I expected there to be some horrible twist like "oh all the puppets are trying to kill you and make you into a puppet" and...it never went there. It stayed uncannily wholesome the entire time.

Having watched a couple of playthroughs of My Friendly Neighborhood and then the Game Theory episode on it, the game has a surprisingly nice message that it's trying to convey. I appreciated the way it was kind of a "what if" on Sesame Street (with a touch of supernatural added to make the puppets come to life, literally). Of course, they "hid" a lot of the stuff in documents and reading (namely the dates and info that make the comparisons), so it can be easy to miss, especially if you don't know the history of Sesame Street. It's even got a Mr. Rogers-style send-off message at the end.
@icarue993

Its equally nice and frustrating the "Dark Souls"sy ways of story telling. In DS, you dont care much but to kill the "baddies". In newer survival horror type games (FNAF, Bendy, etc), most of the LORE is in documents and audiologs. By what I've seen, My friendly neighborhood is kind of a mix of both. With Arlo (surprised no one ever talk about the hand puppet being a famousish KZbinr) and the protagonist bantering and getting the story that way. COmbined with documents and audio logs. Spoiler? I don't know if the decition to get the "true ending" is hidden, but if its not, I would be surprised Yahtzee didn't see it. I'm sure he would have metagamed and went to help the puppets rather than scram. EDIT: I also got most of my info about the game through Game Theory.

"That Oscar guy talks a lot of sense." Sorry if this is only tangentially related, but Oscar the Grouch is a genius character, because in any other piece of children's programming, he'd be the obvious bad guy because he hates everything that other people like. But no, on Sesame Street, that's just the way the Grouches are and that's fine. It takes some work getting used to them because they're so different, but once you do, they're valued members of society. No, I got nothing to add about the games, I think Yahtzee said everything that needs saying there.

Sounds like Viewfinder was shooting to be the next Portal, but only had one string to its bow. Also, that comment about "keeping cookies in drawers out of reach of kids" sounds a lot less like a hypothetical now that Yahtzee has actually got a family now. Yahtzee is now in his next stage of evolution. He has progressed from surly, dysfunctional 20-something to surly-but-begrudgingly-fatherly 40-something... as it should be. I'm still glad his videos haven't changed a jot, though. They're a bastion of 00s internet fun in a world gone wrong.

Viewfinder has an excellent mechanic, but may not have had enough people to figure out really brain-twisty things to do with it. Each hubworld introduces like one new way of interaction and 2 new very specific ways of solving puzzles and then just cludges together a bunch of puzzles where those new mecahnics are part of the way to solve the puzzle. And once you get in that rythm of 'use new mechanic' the puzzles become quite easy. Funnily enough it actually also uses Superliminal type perpective shenanigans a few times, but no one seemingly thought to actively integrate those into the picture taking/placing aspect of the game which is a shame. Also my biggest gripe: The final level is a time-attack mode. Solve 9 short puzzles in 5 minutes. (though i have been told you can disable the countdown in settings) "Do the same, but under time pressure" always feels like the easy design copout for a finale in a puzzle game to me.

Honestly, until this review, I assumed that My Friendly Neighborhood was a sequel to Hello Neighbor, another indie horror game that apparently petered out by the last act, but with some open-world bits sprinkled in.

A game that is the same issues as Viewfinder is The Pedestrian, it has an interesting concept and a pretty art style but after you get through the puzzles in the story it's sort of just ends a bit flat.

Oh right, Viewfinder. I think I saw footage of it in one of Frost's "Cold Takes". 1:34 Speaking of, I still didn't finish reading "Snow Crash". Which I started 3 years ago. 3:05 Shit, I'm still behind on "Peaky Blinders". Huh, so a video game darkly parodies Sesame Street, but reinforces what it stood for? I might check it out. My favorite Muppets from that show are still Oscar, Cookie Monster, and The Count.

It's more "Survival Dark Comedy" than "Survival Horror," but it got that "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating for a reason. Alternate reality where people decided being "friendly to their neighbor" would get thier kids hurt. Studio went under, the sentient puppets have gone stir crazy. You can blast through and shut the place down, or go back through the areas to help the big monsters find peace and get the good ending. Most people I've seen beat it in about 4-5 hours, more like 8 if they go for 100%. They also give you 15 old-school cheat codes as collectibles, which I found delightful.

I was really impressed with the demo for My Friendly Neighborhood. It's a legit cool game and sure it's not "scary" like an Outlast or FNAF but it's still well worth checking out. I suspect Yahtzee might have mostly been let down by the lack of overt horror, which is valid.

As much as it may make people roll their eyes, I'd suggest the Game Theory on it to learn about the analogy the game is playing with (if you couldn't tell what it was like me).
@VeritabIlIti

@@GayBearBro2well there's the problem, isn't it? If the game isn't scary, making its central analogy and exploration clearer would have given it more meat. But instead you get a survival horror game that isn't scary and a poignant thematic exploration of society and culture buried beneath text logs and clips.
