Fun fact! The yellow spot is called the “field spot,” the part of the melon that doesn’t get any sun. And since watermelons only get sweeter / mature while they’re on the vine , the bigger and deeper the yellow color , the more time it sat out in the field to get super sweet! ( takes about 80-90 ish days to mature. ) Also, on the ends of the watermelon ( where the vines would have been) , they should be brown -ish , not green. If they’re green , that means they were picked too early and not mature yet. Fun facts from a plant/ botany nerd! 😊👨🏻🔬🤓🍉🌱

@@tammysummerfield183 No problem! I’m glad it was helpful! No , I don’t unfortunately. I took botany in college and happen to know a lot about this fruit ( and cantaloupe) because I’ve had family who’ve helped harvest them in summers. So i just wanted to share some fun facts about finding a nice sweet one ! 😁🍉🍈
@SuperManning113 жыл бұрын
¡Gracias, Elias! Nothing like facts to help dispel the lore. Makes complete sense regarding the yellow spot. How about tapping or thumping the melon? I try to listen for tension in the skin-if that makes any sense. My reasoning is that when it it very ripe it will be ready to split open as soon as you take a knife to it. But that’s just my idea-¿qué dice el maestro?
@Leeus133 жыл бұрын
@@SuperManning11 Muchas gracias! That is also a very common method to test for sweetness and there is some science behind it. Basically, a sweet/ripe watermelon when thumped will sound dull and dampened ( almost bass like ) while an unripe watermelon will have a, "tighter, metallic sound" ( Zeng et. al., 2014). The reason the ripe watermelons sound dull is because they've had more time to mature and collect water and increase their sugar content>> thus dampening the sound. Sugar (along with other features of the melon) can also affect the transmission of sound waves and how we hear them, making them sound dull or sharp pitched. Overall, you can thump them as a way to tell if they're sweet. But from studies I've reading, it often takes 1) lots of practice overtime with consistent size of watermelons 2) use it with other visual methods to determine ripeness. I would say, thump them if you've been doing this for a while and can the sound difference between ripe/ unripe. But also try some of the visual features i mentioned earlier to help be extra sure they're sweet! I hope this helps!Que tenga un buen día!

@tammysummerfield183 only wild red meat. That's it. Nothing else but water. Unless you grow your own veggies do not eat them. Pork and chicken rarely if you desire but usually red meat. Natural grazing beef, deer, elk, etc. It's got everything a healthy average person needs. Your hunger will also disappear and the satisfaction after you eat is like nothing you've felt. You have to give it 2 weeks because your body will have to adjust. There are exceptions like people with certain conditions that need other things or can't eat red meat for whatever reason, but it will cure most people of their ailments as well as give you everything you need. People don't believe me, but then those people never get to be mind blown. Their loss

My favorite! And for festive summertime cocktail parties, I steep fresh ginger and bruised mint leaves in the juice with key lime slices to give it an edge as it chills in the fridge 8 hours, then strain and serve in martini glasses with ice cold vodka for an optional kick and the glass rimmed with Tajín mixed with a little sugar. Garnish with a watermelon wedge and a lime wheel positioned by a frilly toothpick, and it will be the hit of the cocktail party on the deck or the patio. For health reasons, stay hydrated, sisters !

You can make watermelon pickles out of the rinds too! Sooooo good! The 1st time a coworker said she made some watermelon pickles and I started laughing because I thought she was joking. Next day she came to work with a jar. They make them out of strips of the rind no bigger than the size of a pickle. OMG!! They were so good. She said the hardest part of making them is getting enough people to eat the sweet part of the watermelon. Just a thought in case you want to use the whole fruit.

I literally was about to search for a watermelon drink recipe for my little ones and look what was on my home page! Yay! Gracias Amigas! Update: I just ordered my glass pitcher and glass juicing bottles. I can’t wait to make jugos and aguas frescas. And BTW: I LOVE the white part of the watermelon. It’s my favorite part. Growing up we only got one slice of watermelon because there were so many of us including all the primos, primas, vecinos. So I ate everything but the peel. Lol! It’s how our parents and grandparents kept us outside.... and how we entertained ourselves ...... seed spitting contest. I appreciate seedless watermelons now, but this summer I will teach my boys how to spit out watermelon seeds and see who spits the furthest. (For those that are thinking we are going to be “spitting” around others..... no worries, it will be in the comfort of our own home in our backyard). 😁
