Vigilante 8 was much funner than Twisted Metal. The levels in Vigilante 8 were completely destructable. Characters were all fun to use. Just a really fun time with the Nintendo 64 and Vigilante 8!!!

@@chesspunk489 i haven't played this yet but i would guess that it probably won't top twisted metal 2 for me. it will almost certainly top twisted metal 3 though, and several other twisted metals that came on later consoles.
@Reds-Retros2 жыл бұрын
@@Jack_80 I loved and grew up playing both, but TM2 overall wins hands down for me. I'd say that both V8 games are better than any of the other ps1 TM games though. That being said, they both offer different kinds of car combat experiences with TM being more of a shooter first car fantasy whereas V8 has more accurate car physics and has some crazy weapon physics but suffers in story and atmosphere in comparison. Both TM and V8 are worth owning, playing and are definitely both fantastic and are arguably the best of the genre. If you want to play V8, I suggest the PS1 version for being more content complete and having the longer, higher quality and arguably better soundtrack and the DreamCast version for V82 as its the most technically sophisticated and doesn't suffer from the botched N64 soundtrack. The interstate games on PC are definitely worth a look too, but are slightly more simmish and can be hard to get running properly on modern hardware.

There is no single answer since a bunch of people can create a better game - i.e your core premise is fallacious. Anyway, in software engineering there is something called the Mythical man month. In a nutshell it means that putting more people on a project doesn't mean the project will ship faster or be better since you have to put more and more layers of management to organize people. And yes, the vision gets challenged hard, among other things.

Great job! I literally grew up with Vigilante 8 (and Second Offense) on N64. I later played the PlayStation versions. I personally like the N64 versions better because those are the ones I grew up with, but the PlayStation versions are just as good if not better. I always liked the N64 soundtracks better, even if the sound quality on the N64 wasn't as good, Alexander Brandon worked hard on the N64 soundtrack and I think it shows. I have played the Twisted Metal games and I own a few of them, but the only one I was ever good at was Head On. I like the first one, especially because of the first-person view where you can see the inside of the car. I later ended up purchasing the Japanese versions of the first and second game on PS1 and those are quite enjoyable as well. The Japanese dubs are pretty good, too. I hope you review the second game!

I had V8 on the N64 and V8 Second Offense on PS1 which to me is the best way to experience them. V8 is one of those games that gets stuck in your head and you go throughout your day with heavily compressed 70's disco music stuck in your head. I played it quite a bit, but could never get past the stage where the halftrack boss was introduced. The level designs were very cool. Loved the "Vegas" map where you could ride around in a blimp.

They did... it’s called “Vigilante 8: Second Offense”... it came out on N64, PS1, and Dreamcast. It added 4 new drivers and upgraded the physics model but the graphics we’re mostly the same. Kind of fell under the radar because it dropped around the same time as Twisted Metal 4 (which is just AWFUL), and ultimately failed to generate enough interest for the series to justify moving forward. Worth checking out for sure if you loved the first one. I have a copy for import DC I enjoy taking out for multiplayer sessions to this day.

Never did play this one on N64, we had it for our PS1. I have to say there is such a charm to this franchise when compared to Twisted Metal. I love both franchises, but V8 (and Interstate 76 and 82) had something else that just set it above TM in my eyes. Perhaps it was because the game wasn't trying to be too edgy and had amazing music. I still own Second Offense for my Dreamcast though :p

I want to make a few things clear I get on with the comment. I grew up with all five PS1 Twisted Metal games. I had a demo of the first Vigilante 8 on a disc. More recently as of a few years ago, I got to fully play the N64 version. As much I respected Twisted Metal series, I was blown away by Vigilante 8. This had more interesting stage designs with different objectives for every character. It was surprisingly well balanced as well. The music isn't bad, I like a few songs here and there. Y the Alien is ridiculous lol. Honestly, this game was one of the most addicting car combat games I ever played. I actually want to find a copy of the sequel badly. I actually heard it's even better.

Its realy hard to say which verion was the best one. Both had their pros and cons but i grew up with the ps1 version so if i have to pick, il go for the ps1. The rad cutscenes is something that had me hyped a lot playing trough the game the first time! There is just something special about the early day cgi cutscenes from ps1 games that gives off a mysterious vibe. What i do miss in the ps1 version trough is the survival mode. Its like the ultimate vigilante 8 challenge! I once got a 112 car kill streak on the hoover dam map. Reason why i was able to do so is that the wrench tends to respawn a lot in the middle of the map where the electric waves pass. Just like you said, which game has the best music just cant be decided. Both versions got kickass tracks! Anyway, you did a great job on this review! You realy got me longing to go play this game once more! It is a timeless classic!

I'm so glad Interstate '76 indirectly gave birth to the more arcadey, I76 bastard-child that spawned as a result of Activision trying and failing to port/recreate Interstate 76 on the N64. Even though the depth, scope, immersion and graphical fidelity weren't exactly possible, in the end what we wound up with was Vigilante 8 and it was a fucking blast. Taking the hardware of the N64 and PS1 into account, the graphical achievements and robustness of the engine they created for V8 is mind-blowing in hindsight. As someone who's played a metric FUCK-TON of both of these games, V8 and I76, but moreso V8, I'm still regularly stupified by how well the N64 (with or without expansion pak) handled the sheer amount of CRAZY FUCKING SHIT going on at any one moment. When you're 100+ kills into a Survival mode on "Premium High Octane" difficulty, there's so much fucking shit going on and remnants of so much shit that's happened. The N64 keeps up with dozens of missiles and mortars, around 8-12 enemies not counting the player, all of which are beating the fuck out of the environment leaving craters, blast markings and terrain deformation and the whole time it's running all this shit, it only stutters and slows down here and there. But then again, what fucking N64 game doesn't have slowdown? It was a strange, mysterious, dangerous, and confusing time for gaming with the mass exodus of developers from 2D to 3D. :P

I liked this game and the sequel 2nd Offense. I'm trying to remember if I played Twisted Metal or Vigilante 8 first but it's not coming to me as I tried both the same year probably. At the time I liked V8 better since it had 4-player split screen(TM may have also but I never had a multitap) My favorite car combat game now though is Twisted Metal Black for the PS2.

this game was a personal fav for the n64 i spent a long time on it the cars and weapons were all cool as well as the stages....wow i had completely forgotten about the castle stage you can unlock my favorite car was the bee dude or the disco ball thought the good guys had a harder time in the game protecting something sucked especially the last 2 missions for each one nothing sucks more then the last for destroying what your protecting D: oh well oh and the 2nd game was even better :D
