1965 Martha looks like she doesn't belong to that time. She would fit well in the 2000s even until today (2020).

Pollini won in 1960. Argerich in 1965. Can't you google and find the past results on Wikipedia. Anyhow, Argerich could have blown away Pollini anytime. She won both the Busoni and Geneva competitions in 1958 when she was 16 years old within a couple of weeks. Interestingly, you can see Edward Auer at 0:57, American, who got 5th place. Superb pianist and on the faculty at Indiana -- I had a few lessons with him back in the day.

I'm crazy about Argerich and Pollini both, but the idea she would effortlessly have beaten him is way off. She in fact only barely edged out Moreira-Lima for first, while Pollini completely blew away the field. Rubinstein, who was a judge, said "Pollini showed complete supremacy over the other contestants", and that he "already played better than anyone on the jury". Personally, I think she has a greater flare for Chopin, specifically, but keep in mind his technical infallibility and complete devotion to the letter of the score, which would impress the heck out of any jury.

They were all superb Argerich, Pollini, and Lupu who won in 1964 yet Glen Gould rivaled Horowitz and by some accounts surpassed his playing according to some experts.

People played works other than the (usually-botched) Op. 11 in the final sat the time?!!
@lospazio2 жыл бұрын
Well, the contest requires to play one piano concerto, and Chopin wrote only two. It's natural to choose the 1st over the 2nd more often: it's much more brilliant.

Not surprising - in 1965 , she was only 24 and had not borne her 3 children - (all daughters) then. I don't think it (the waistline) is THAT much bigger now!

Ellos son dos grandes pianistas, cada uno con si estilo, el maestro de Argerich,que se llamaba Scaramuzza decía de ella que no se hizo pianista,nació pianista.
