For the past six months, the U.S. government and its Western allies have employed brutal repression to silence critics of Israel's genocidal regime.
At the same time, they've employed extreme violence and other forms of aggression to maintain their position of global dominance.
NATO military spending, already at stratospheric levels, is soaring ever higher.
In this context, on May 3, 2024, Dimitri Lascaris spoke with Vijay Prashad about the rise of neo-fascism in the West.
Vijay Prashad is a historian, author, journalist and political commentator. He is the executive-director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, Editor of Leftword Books, Chief Correspondent at Globetrotter, and a senior non-resident fellow at Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China.

I finished it last month. Currently reading his "The Darker Nations" book, and I have 2 more left to get through. The thing is, as bad as the stuff is that they've made public, it still barely scratches the surface.

Thank you Dimitri from NY for great topics and good explanation for all. I think with the student protests here, we cannot predict because generation Z is so much different from all the past ones. They are knowledgeable, they don't like war, even when knowingly ill treated, they don't jump start on the offender, want dialogue. Unlike zionists, pro Palestinian protestors have formed a coalition with the jewish protestors. I hope they'll go on and on💫

The sad reality is that our wisest and most humanistic international thinkers have little voice unless you look for them. Humanity itself is being subsumed by megalomaniacs with BIG podiums, while the naive, ignorant masses are being manipulated like puppets. At the age of 75 I have come to feel like it is a blessing to be an old man because contemporary realities seem to portend a very dystopian future.

Great conversation, thanks for setting this up, Dimitri! When you guys were talking about the protest movements and saying how they are bigger than just standing up against genocide and the brutal treatment of Palestinian people because youth all around the world are seeing no future and can't stand the 'leaders' who aren't doing anything to help, I felt that so much! It is so true. And then Vijay talked about the problem with a leaderless movement, and I tend to agree. My concern with the protests is that there isn't an underlying message of not just what the problem is but also pathways to system change and peace. Like, I think Occupy had at least tried to get to the core of the problem: late stage capitalism and the greed and inequality that comes from that, but that was years ago and youth today could use some good leaders. I think there are several ways that we can prepare for building a better future. Education remains one of the most important things. Real education, fostering critical thinking, etc. which is something I appreciate you doing. You and some other prominent journalists and public speakers like Chris Hedges, Lee Camp, Abby Martin, Aaron Mate, Norman Finkelstein, Caitlin Johnstone, Richard Medhurst, etc. But we need local social movements that can be connected globally so people have some place to collaborate their actions. Could be through One Small Town Contributionism or Mutual Aid Networks or a revamped TZM (Peter Joseph's new film Zeitgeist: Requiem soon to be released is a great educational tool and motivator of community action). There are also academics out there speaking the truth and providing the evidence and suggestions to build a more sustainable future for all, like Jason Hickel, Kate Raworth, Tim Jackson and the whole bunch of great presenters at the Beyond Growth conference. There are multiple layers of support for the push for the greater good and system change to stabilize humanity into the future. Social, political, independent media, academic, etc. Putting the pieces together to find what works best will be the key.

🇨🇦 here. When Oct 7 happened, I was worried about China’s position. And then their spokesperson said “There are no heroes here, just villains and victims”. That stuck with me. And then I thought, I feel like I’m missing something about China’s threat to the world…🤔

Perhaps a confusion between John Locke and J.S.Mill?
@communistmole
@communistmole Ай бұрын
It's nice for Mr. Prasad that he takes the long view of political movements, but perhaps some people are tired of seeing their lives in historical dimensions of time, which more often than not only mean death for them personally. Besides, he confuses J.S. Mill with John Locke.

My problem is with the word fascist. I think there are probably a few different meanings for it; but a certain non-defined implied meaning that has been stuck to the word makes the term derogatory in general and penalizes all kinds of situations, which are all seen through that murky lens, and not all of which deserve to be seen that way or penalized.
@annoloki
@annoloki Ай бұрын
Well I wouldn't use the word "fascism" because of its failure to be able to convey any agreed meaning... it came from the name of the Italian political party, and we called Hitler's Germany "fascist" due to their alliance, but that dilutes any meaning, as the ideological elements that set the foundation of fascism simply didn't exist in Germany. Using the term today loses even more meaning... so it's useless for communicating anything specific, without having to spend the time explaining it anyway... so why attach the word? I call it national narcissism. In traditional narcissism, the narcissist's insecurities stop them from thinking of themselves at the same time evaluating any negative outcome, so they are unable to connect the dots between their own actions and negative outcomes. In national narcissism, we see the same thing at the societal level, as our information system basically doesn't report to the population the crimes carried out by the state, especially overseas, and reports reprisals as if they happened for no reason, so you get this victim inversion and other behaviours that follow the model of narcissistic abuse... and of course, Israel being probably the pinnacle of the growth of nationalist-narcissists, with all the sense of entitlement that goes with it. Hi BTW, not heard your name since The Real News days, but you've now appeared in my youtube recommendations... good to see you again!
