There's this modern tendency to assume that people in the past were not as thoughtful and human as we are now. Just as I practice self defense "just in case" with zero desire to see combat, so too lived my female ancestors. Good men were honorable, bad men weren't, and most people just wanted to live well just as it is now. I'd love to see more videos about daily life in the old days.

I totally disagree with you in the past...there were limits, values, and principles...but lying...exposing the part...the other and not the whole truth...wars were burning...because of...insulting a woman..... In the past, people used to call each other...So-and-so, son of so-and-so...Family and tribe...Pillars of society...Today...Neither men are men, nor women are women.

The womon or wifes in the Dark middle age (Viking time perio) did practice in the arts of fighting as you do in self defence today. Especially those you where left at home, when their men took job as víkingr (Viking, sea raiders) It's was not umcommen the children learn from early ages the basics of fighting. By the way I hope you never have to use, what you learn in self defence but happy to hear you are able to fight back. Kind regards from Denmark Peter

My guess, 'Vikings' was trying to compete with 'Game of Thrones'...History channel vs. HBO. If 'Vikings' depicted actual vikings as too reasonable or peaceful then they wouldn't be as competitive as a show. Sex and violence is what sells unfortunately, not rational forethought, insight, and historical accuracy XD ... :( Which is a loss for all, I think.

The first season of Vikings the goal was to try portray, somewhat accurately, various parts of Viking life from that era. The History Channel was completely overwhelmed by the positive reaction, and popular demand for a second season. Then the challenge was to try and weave in some history with an entertaining narrative. It's the difference between documentaries and entertainment. Each have a place and an audience.

The concept of knightly chivalry didn't just appear out of nowhere, it built upon attitudes that were already present in Germanic societies, holding the upper classes to the 'perfect' ideal of how women should be treated.
@destroyraiden
@destroyraiden 2 жыл бұрын
Chivalry was originally knights and lords looking out for other knights and lords women, elderly, and children had no place there it was simply if i capture you I'll give you a good room, food, and treat your wounds then send you packing off home so you'll do the same for me. To kill someone of your class without good cause went against chivalry. You could kill them in a fair fight though. The concept you're talking about is a Victorian construct we've ingrained as the women's treatment and that was simply not the case for it's original use.

The Byzantine historian Johannes Skylitzes records that women fought in battle when the Norse ruler of Kiev attacked the Byzantines in Bulgaria in 971. When the Norsemen had suffered a crushing defeat, they were Eastern Roman conquerors surprised to discover armed women among the enemy's fallen warriors.

Tacitus, one of our very good friends, has written very honestly about Germanic (Norse is a part of that of course) society and how women were treated. Promiscuous women were shamed by the entire tribe, rape was a serious crime and the warriors also did not rape women during the military campaigns and if they did rape they were often punished for it. Women were considered wise and were highly respected in our culture. Those fat monks created lies to spread the narrative that non-believers are evil monsters, covering up the actual evil of christianity.

This is what I think about all of this. Women have the most equality and protection under the law in Scandinavia. It seems to me that the apple wouldn't fall far from the tree and even in age where most women were treated even less than animals. They want to promote Scandinavia men as brutal savages, so we're looked upon as wicked and intolerant! In my humble opinion.

I am a woman, and I love this so much! 😍 To any angry women reading this comment, don't be upset about old norse traditions regarding women. Be proud of them. Be proud of being a woman. Women were protected and valued, and not allowed to fight in battle, because WE ARE PRECIOUS! We are the ones who bring life into the world, therefore we SHOULD be protected. We shouldn't be allowed to run out into battle just so we can die. Think of it this way: if there were an apocalypse, and we needed more humans to survive and repopulate Mother Earth, it would be better to have 50 women, and only 1 man. That 1 man could get all of those 50 women pregnant, and they could conceive an entire generation this way. But if it was flipped, and there were only 1 woman and 50 men, they would have to wait 9 months before they could have just 1 more human. This is why women are precious, valuable, and should be protected. We bring life.

The Thirteenth Warrior is a melding of two stories. Beowulf and the story of ibn Fadlan. Only the second is true. The quest to protect the village (longhouse) is Crighton's invention. Fadlan was sent as an ambassador. His description of a chieftain's funeral is our source for Norse funerary practices.

Let me guess, you hate women? Also he didn’t say there was no shieldmaidens, he said they weren’t as popular as depicted because they VALUED THEIR WOMEN ALIVE. Really good video, you made another one similar to this a while back that I really liked. I agree, I don’t understand this modern notion that women have to be doing all the things that men are doing in order to be seen as strong. Women can and are strong in their own right and own way. Being shielded from the harsh brutalities of violence and war does not make us weak, it means we are respected and protected. …….. Oh yes, Sigrid Storråda aka Sigrid the Haughty! I loved her story very much. A proud heathen to the end. I named one of my daughter’s after her…well she has a family name and that name as well.

Great video! In contrast to the Norse, the Romans did record vivid accounts of Celtic/ Gaulic women fighting in battle alongside THEIR men. This would not have been the norm, but was probably a desperate and noble gesture by these women to fight and die beside their husbands, rather than be widowed and possibly raped by Roman soldiers. So, like Norse women, pretty much the exact opposite of today's "strong independent women."

I'm giggling after watching this video thinking about the strange guy in my backyard yesterday morning trying to steal tools.... I got to that dude long before my husband or 19 yr old son did... the thought of living back in the days and being that viking woman that walks right into the fire gives me warm fuzzies. That is a misconception. The samurai code never existed until the 17th century mind you, when there weren't anymore wars to fight. So it was a way for the Shogunate to control the samurai caste during peace times, yet even than it wasn't universally practiced. And are you saying Norsemen didn't raid or plunder unsuspected settlements? Isn't the word ‘vikingr’ the old Norse word for ‘raid’ or ‘to raid?’ I don't know about you but it would be more efficient to surprise the enemy, chase them off and plunder as you saw fit; with fights here and there among the defenders unwilling to give up their goods.

On women being completely being kept from the battlefield: are we to take the word of Snorri Sturluson (who did not mention these women warriors) and completely ignore Saxo Grammaticus (Who wrote about women fighters and even women war captains and women Vikings) who wrote his History of the Danes at the same time? Also that in the Sagas there were men who dressed up as women and when challenged as to why they looked so mannish, they replied that they had been warrior women (and were believed.) I am asking because years ago I was hotly challenged online by a Scandinavian when I brought up the 'women weren't even supposed to touch weapons of war' argument. - Thanks. I can remember reading a story in the poetic edda about Thor and a ferryman, where the ferryman told about trouble with a woman, and Thor said if he were there, he would've hold her down for him. The way they talk about it made me think it was quite normal to do so.
@mustplay7212
@mustplay7212 2 жыл бұрын
Again, Edda was not written by an actual viking. You have to be somewhat critical, because the norse culture was not a literary one. It was based on oral traditions. If you assume that vikings were like hollywood vikings or that all they did was warfare or whatever, then you are making the same mistake as alot of people do. You cant assume that it was always like that just because a text written after the viking era said so. And thor wasnt real so it cannot rly be taken as a representation of reality. Neither Snorre Sturlason or the Edda poems are 100 percent accurate. Do I believe they were progressive and modern? no ofc, but we cannot overexcaggerate how bad the viking era was just because christian writers said so. That and glorifying the vikings are two very bad things that people today have a tendency to do

I really appreciate the work you put into this ty. Just wondering about your take on the book The Far Traveller? also, I have insight into something and wondering what you think: could our ancestors be speaking through those of us who see what is considered "bullying" and preying on the "soft" in our society and so makes us want to act on these injustices? I had a brother who was a very big and strong man- not afraid of other men- but he was also very smart and actually kind and soft hearted towards those who were being bullied and hurt- he defended the bullied and took them under his wing since he was a small boy- but he also had endured much suffering at the hands of our father and a neighbour older child and so died from a drug and alcohol overdose- Im not sure if Im being clear here but this has really struck me lately that folks like myself who see much injustice and dishonour in our world - that is my ancestors speaking through us with much displeasure and upset over injustice, dishonour and mistreatment of those weaker. Thoughts?

I always found the shield-maiden idea kind of odd, and I’m glad to know that there are reliable historical sources to clarify the subject. On the rape subject, history is rarely as bad or as good as we think. Just about every time I read about a group of people being either evil or too good to be true, I’ve come to assume the truth is in the middle… Like now and basically every time in history, there were a decent set of values held to by most, with outliers that broke them occasionally and were usually punished accordingly.

I stopped at the 1:18 mark deliberately to comment. I have seen the long running Vikings program or tv series, and throughout the seasons and episodes I got tired of all the hob-knobbing around AND I DOUBTED THAT THAT IS THE WAY IT WAS. SO I'M GLAD TO HEAR YOU SAY WHAT YOU DID AT THE START.

I agree 100% with @Farieflower, I'd love to hear more stories about daily life, community, relationships, who had what tasks to keep the villages going, etc. This is officially my favorite channel now. So the woman's skeleton found in Norway in 1900 surrounded with weapons and a horse skeleton at her feet and with a cracked skull that suggests a sword wound was NOT a shield maiden? She was simply being feisty? That seems like a pretty elaborate burial for someone just being feisty. You know much more than I, but there seems to be some real world evidence of women in battle. Maybe this is where the TV shows got their information. Although I'm sure a lot of it was dramatized to make a drama based series.

I like this video. I've been under the impression that, as a woman, being preyed upon by men is and always has been inevitable. It's good to know that our people were more dignified and honourable than I've been led to believe. I wonder if the misleading propaganda about this topic was created, in part, to lower our expectations... to make us view natural honourability as remarkable and abuse of power as normal.

I really like the tv show vikings, but thats all it is, a show. I am well aware that is not how things went down. (Although the sacking of the monastery was pretty acurate i guess?) It is such a pitty almost all the records are lost in time or destroyed by the Christian religion. I really love all these video's where you try and clearefy how things went down. I live in the Netherlands, southeren parts and this was basicly the border of the roman empire. They explained this to us in elementry school during history. They told us we used to have (almost)the same religion before the romans came. And that many vikings coming down here usually where willing to trade with us instead of killing all of us. So from an esrly age i always had more respect for the viking people then the holy roman empire or the invading frankish people. And when they teached us the spanish inquisition and the Malleus Maleficarum i started to straight up hate the monotheistic believes. Everything done in the name of God, is done out of pure profit and self gain. Holding back sosiaty and human evolution. Sorry about my rant. I really like your video's but this part of history always brings these things up in me

We, the Dutch people, were also a "viking" society for we are of germanic tribes and blood. It is sad that our ancient culture and pagan beliefs were driven to extinction by the christians, but i do see that pagans rise in numbers. The gods awaken us, and i feel for a purpose. Proost!

@Berserking Bishop that it is because of the christians we don't live how pagans used to, for forcing their belief upon others, writing the stories down in the point of view of christians. This is the power of pagan religion; interacring with the gods for their knowledge instead of reading what a priest wrote hundreds of years ago.
@FatherOfSithis
@FatherOfSithis 2 жыл бұрын
@Berserking Bishop most certainly there has been used violence in the history of christians converting others and that is no different during the "end of pagansim", and an oppressor does not always have to use an army to achieve victory. Like you said that converting the king lets the people follow, is a tactic. Like converting a head of a household has influence on converting the family. For pagans it is easier to adopt another god because they belief in multiple gods. Where the christians belief there is only one true god, which in the end you had to abandon all other beliefs. So through the centuries from leadership figures picking up the sword to non violent conversion tactics, pagans have been forced to convert.

You reference sagas. I would suggest that much of the material the world has used to study the viking age is from monks, etc. in England, Ireland, etc., which I am sure were purposely exaggerated to make the vikings seem worse. However, I would bet vikings treated other vikings/Scandinavians better than the French, English, Irish, etc. So that the violent images of vikings are truer in those areas.

Exactly. This feels like a real rosey depiction of them and I find that unsettling. Wherever there is war, conquest or violence- rape always follows. The Norse were not above this and to suggest otherwise is disingenuous. Rape is too prevalent today, where women are at least legally considered equal… It would have been much worse back then. Seeing all these romanticised anti rape comments are really concerning.

And yet in Ireland the Norse integrated completely with the Irish. I think we look back at these times with the relatively recent perspective of nationhood. You could be feuding with people 20 miles away but allied with people hundreds of miles away. There was no Norway, Sweden or Denmark as we know them now. Maybe race wasn't a factor either. Just political agreement.

@@thesaltbucket324 The sagas are not factual per se. They are the written version of oral history that’s been passed down for centuries and recorded by a Christian. I’ll look into contemporary sources but I doubt that such things would have ever been recorded. That’s the issue, this to me is common knowledge.. History tells the same story over and over again. When war, colonisation and violence is in play, women get raped. It doesn’t matter what country, men do this even in war today. Rape itself is incredibly present by today’s standards, it would have been even worse back when women were not equal.
