This video will teach you how to make your own birch bark container for viking reenactment with very simple tools. I strive to only use tools from the viking age. I must admit that my home made pump drill with convertible bits is not based on an authentic vikinge age reconstruction - but it works good for on-the-go projects. I forgot my hand forged viking carving knife on the second part of the trip, so I am using a modern Mora knife as the second best.
Almost everything you see in the video is handmade by me. Knifes, bags, tools, containers, clothing, shoes and so on. And besides the drill and the Mora knife all items are replicas of authentic viking age items.
Birch bark is harvested from birch trees with care and respect for the tree at the right times of the year to prevent damaging the tree. Sadly where I live there are no big birch trees to harvest so I must purchase my sheets from another craftsman.
Birch bark containers in the viking age are know in various shapes and sizes. I am aware of a few with lid and bottom also of bark stitched together. Containers of bend wood shingles also exist throughout the period and in Novgorod (Viking town in modern day Russia) many bark containers is found. In Denmark finds from Bornholm and Lindholm Høje is good examples. The one at Lindholm consists of only 1 thicker layer of bark and is stiched together in a different way. Birch bark has a high content of oils and the bark itself has antiseptic qualities and therefor are particularly good for food storage. Birch bark containers with butter inside is knows far down in history.

OBS this container is not a reproduction of a specific artefact or authentic find from the Viking age but a loose interpretation of a general birch bark container

It's so cool watching you work with these materials. Also, I love that hood! Did you make it yourself? If so, would you mind sharing how? I've been getting into leatherworking and want to try making something like that next for myself. Keep up the great work!

Hey Ramuni, I’ve seen all your films twice and love them all. I hope to see a lot of films in the near future. Where do you get the bark for these containers? I want to make a backpack similar like yours. Greatings Erwin
@RAMUNI-Viking
@RAMUNI-Viking 4 ай бұрын
HELLO Erwin:) thank you for your kind Words. I have so many videos planned, but the lack of time at hand slows the proces. But I Hope you Will be patient and enjoy the content:) the bark can be collected from the birch trees depending on your location. Sadly here in Denmark the growth and quality of birch doesnt make good bark. So the bark i use is bought. I was lucky to buy some from a house project where it was used as underroofing like in traditional building from scandinavia. There was some excess that i bought at a fair price. Sometimes Crafts shops with natural materials Such as leather and wood can supply birch bark in big sheets. The sheets i bought was 60x60cm. Its not always easy to find and the last i got was too dry and brittle for making boxes and baskets. I wish you good luck and Hope you Will find some good bark. All the best

Venlig hilsen Tom

@RAMUNI-Viking 2 жыл бұрын
Hej Tom.

How thick does the bark need to be to be useful when making things with it?
@RAMUNI-Viking
@RAMUNI-Viking Жыл бұрын
I think mine is around 1,5 to 2 milimeters. Its more about not being to brittle than being thick enough. I have had some really thick 3 mm but it was crispy as bacon and wouldnt bend and fold

Hello, how do you harvest the bark? Whenever I try it, the bark breaks at these "scars" it has on the outer surface. Because of that I cannot harvest strips wider than 10 cm at best. Is there a way to tear away bark that has these scars, or maybe repair them using historically accurate materials?
@RAMUNI-Viking
@RAMUNI-Viking Жыл бұрын
This bark is purchased for this purpose. Sadly the trees i have access to is not good enough and I have the same Experience as you. In my other video with the backpack i tried to harvest but failed. I wrote this in the video description of the other video. I think i has to do with the type of birch, the time of year and the growth conditions and climate. I dont know of good ways to harvest or repair but I have seen many good videos on KZbin about harvesting bark. Maybe some of these could be helpful. All the best

The bark he was using looked like off a dead tree. That's much easier to remove and has really cool patterns. If you're doing live bark , it comes off much easier late spring early summer. Look for pieces without so many eyes.
