On this video let us see the herbs and plants mostly used in the Viking Age, at least according to Ethnobotany applied to Archaeology. And I take the opportunity to explore the Nine Herbs Charm ("Nigon Wyrta Galdor"), an Old English poem which tells us about powerful nine herbs, and a peculiar mention to the god Woden.
The nine herbs in question from the Nigon Wyrta Galdor / The Nine Herbs Charm:
mucgwyrt - Mugwort
wegbrade - Plantain
Stune - Stune Lamb's cress
Stiðe - Nettle
Attorlaðe - Cockspur grass / Betony
Mægðe - Camomile
Wergulu - Apple
Fille - Thyme / Chervil
Finule - Fennel

I'm better now, thank you. Hope all is well with you too. Plants are indeed a very interesting subject, and a big shout out to our ancestors and their experimentations with plants, because now we are aware of their effects and avoid perishing by the misuse of some plant or ingesting a no-no plant :D

Mugwort , especially the buds , can be smoked or steeped in a tea before bed has a very calming effect but the dreams you’ll get can be intense as it has mild hallucinogenic so be careful with dosage . Once burned a bunch of dried mugwort accidentally during a bonfire that was mixed in with the leaves and brush - and the aroma from it was quite strong and after a half hour or so we all started having conversations with the face in the fire 😂 good times 😅

Thank you for sharing that knowledge, much appreciated. I will give it a try. I'm in need of good conversations, even it it's with faces in a fire :D hehe.

literally had a mugwort tea before bed last night and can confirm: it gives you a lot of very strange dreams but more importantly also interferes with your sleep pretty bad. do not drink mugwort tea before bed if you're gonna need rest. i dont particularly find them to be useful/meaningful dreams in my (fairly limited) experience. i can usually 'feel' when a dream is trying to tell me something, and last night (and other nights) i had a whole bunch of whacky dreams but felt nothing from them

It's one of the principal herbs used to flavour beer (hence "Mug" 🍺 Wort) before the introduction of hops. I've used it trying to recreate ancient brews 😊, with very interesting results. Just don't mix it with very much Yarrow: You'll have a beer that tastes like bile 🤢🤣

Good Day Arith. Hope you’re feeling back to normal very soon. Took me a couple months when I had CV couple years ago. Literally had to stay awake first 3 1/2 days to remember to breathe. Ok now. I never get sick so these new things are powerful. A regular flu is going around here. Took a month for strength back, everyone is saying the same. Healthy Blessings

I very much enjoyed your presentation. I wish you a very swift full recovering from your Covid-19 infection. The first thing I noticed when you appeared on the screen was that you looked abnormally pale, and until you expained I thought there was something different about the lighting. My adult son and I both had covid-19 back in June, and on many of the days our skins were just so white and colourless, and this symptom has been apparent in many others. Looking forward to your next broadcast when you feel up to it.

Such a bummer about you getting COVID, but we are just glad that you are better. Thank you for another great video. It is my UPG (very upg) that herbal use for healing and magic was something not included in the 'lore' as to not give it importance, taking in consideration it was written by xtians. But this video makes tons of sense.

The withholding of information comes in many forms, in many time periods and by many people. It is as they say "knowledge is power". Keeping knowledge from the general public is often a form to aggrandize power and control the masses. It comes as no surprise that folk medicine has been progressively substituted by modern medicine, which uses the same plants but there's a far greater profit from it. If the public doesn't know how to get it, they turn to those who have it. There's an example from my country which was a renowned witch of the early XX century (she appeared in news papers and all and it is even recorded for early TV). When asked about her "business" she would often say "We don't do business here; people are healed and things are guessed" as best as I can translate it, as she used herbs and also did prophecy. She had no enemies, but pharmacies really didn't like her one bit.

I know from other comments that you are better, which is great because covid is quite a bummer (caught it last summer, not pleasant at all). Great video, but I have a small perplexity. Chamomile is mostly used with abdomen ailments, and to facilitate sleep (which is silly, since it's not a hypnogogic herb, but a muscle relaxing one, so it's great to take if you have cramps, both from excerption or menstrual ones, and to placate abdominal pains - still, remember that over 5 minutes of infusion gives the chamomile tea some energizing properties, so if you plan to drink it before you go to bed, keep it under that time), to heal respiratory ailments thyme is way more functional... A lot of these plants are still used today, even if I don't know all the properties or characteristics (not my job...but a pleasant hobby to cultuvate). Hope you'll get ever better 😊 have a great rest of the week!

That’s really interesting to think about Ragnarok. Kinda like the company trying to clone wooly mammoths. That kind of activity is dangerous imo.
Жыл бұрын
It is dangerous indeed if not done towards the best of intentions. Honestly, in terms of bringing back woolly mammoths, I'm a bit on the selfish side because I would love to see one in real life, as well as a woolly rhino. But well, it is a wish that I would prefer to remain just a wish, a fantasy even, if bringing back such animals means bringing terrible consequences to the our current biodiversity.
@manfrombritain6816
@manfrombritain6816 Жыл бұрын
@ wooly mammoths being reintroduced could potentially be a very good thing. there was something i vaguely remember about reintroducing wild buffalo (or similar large bovine) to the UK and how it would stimulate natural woodland massively. it's bulk creates pathways and moves seeds around, it's manure fertilises, it brings other animals all the way down the chain

I have been anticipating this herb talk too, and hope Arith will provide a bibliography. I am particularly glad for the mention of Angelica, one of my favorite european herbs. The following is from A Modern Herbal from Mrs. Grieve : "---History---Its virtues are praised by old writers, and the name itself, as well as the folk-lore of all North European countries and nations, testify to the great antiquity of a belief in its merits as a protection against contagion, for purifying the blood, and for curing every conceivable malady: it was held a sovereign remedy for poisons agues and all infectious maladies. In Couriand, Livonia and the low lakelands of Pomerania and East Prussia, wild-growing Angelica abounds; there, in early summer-time, it has been the custom among the peasants to march into the towns carrying the Angelica flower-stems and to offer them for sale, chanting some ancient ditty in Lettish words, so antiquated as to be unintelligible even to the singers themselves. The chanted words and the tune are learnt in childhood, and may be attributed to a survival of some Pagan festival with which the plant was originally associated. After the introduction of Christianity, the plant became linked in the popular mind with some archangelic patronage, and associated with the spring-time festival of the Annunciation. According to one legend, Angelica was revealed in a dream by an angel to cure the plague. Another explanation of the name of this plant is that it blooms on the day of Michael the Archangel (May 8, old style), and is on that account a preservative against evil spirits and witchcraft: all parts of the plant were believed efficacious against spells and enchantment. It was held in such esteem that it was called 'The Root of the Holy Ghost.'"

This is what i used while recovering from some severe strep throat and covid. Loved this speech on medicine. The serpent portion of your lecture was fantastic and made me think of where modern medicines came from and the symbols still used today. From ancient civilizations, Egypt and Greece had some of the same "sciences" of medical ideas that they all were passed around from peoples to peoples across the euro/Asiatic globe. "The caduceus is the staff carried by Hermes in Greek mythology and consequently by Hermes Trismegistus in Greco-Egyptian mythology. The same staff was also borne by heralds in general, for example, by Iris, the messenger of Hera. It is a short staff entwined by two serpents, sometimes surmounted by wings." The medical symbol still used in medicine today.

Mugwort is also used in Chinese acupuncture. It is made into condensed sticks and small pieces of it are placed on the top end of the needles and burned during a session; not always but seemingly for specific purposes known by the practitioner. It is also lit like an incense stick and held over specific acupuncture points in the body to help in the healing. We used it on our daughter daily for therapy in her beginning years of a thyroid disease she had. With the use of acupuncture, mugwort, and herbs she was brought into remission and has stayed that way for over a dozen years now. The herbs we used were: bugleweed, Melissa, motherwort, skullcap, and Hawthorn. A couple others were added at certain points during therapy, but those listed above were the main ones used throughout.

And many other healing plants and herbs are present like evening primrose, plantain, morning glory, golden rod and others. Most help purge infection and relieve inflammation.

We have sting neddles here in the Pacific Northwest. They're pretty spicy to the touch. I had some experiences with them as a child. I was told fern pollen relieves the sting. I don't remember though. I'm pretty intimated by stinging neddles.

The serpent is also draped around the modern medical symbol, so it's not all evil!

The Nine Herbs in the 'Nine Herbs Charm' seems to be directed at the destroying of some form of 'poison' or 'infection', here also symbolised by the 'Adder' (Serpent). This is the 'foe that fares through the land', and could thus be some form of epidemic/pandemic. In the section on Woden there are different translations from Old English, but the obvious conclusion seems that the Adder 'bit a man' and that Woden smote it, breaking it into nine parts - breaking down its force and power. The phrase 'enter the house' is also interesting, the 'house' (in this instance) being maybe the body. Our English word 'rat' stems from a root meaning 'to leave the falling house'; it is symbolic of a powerful force that enters the 'house' (body or nation etc.), destroys it from within and then 'leaves the falling house' to move on and do the same elsewhere. This is also true of a virus which infects and is passed on from one person to the next. The phrase 'three and thirty' is also interesting, since here in England the Initiates expanded the runes to 33 Runes. Putting nine twigs together in a certain pattern does allow all 33 runes to be found in this pattern - a modern invention but the runes are not something stuck back in the Viking or Anglo-Saxon era, like us they evolve,

Everything said can be related to Hekate, who has two day in the Ides of March. She protects mankind from poisons, her moniker is the Skull over Crossed bones and a rotating hourglass. Should Nov, 13th fall on a Friday, it was a special occasion.
