So beautiful. I think that the underlying bass is a combination of Chance and Adam. Fabulous, as always. I was not familiar with this song before I heard this version. I sent it to a friend and asked her if this is what it usually sounded like. Her response was "Oh, no." Love it.

Love it!! It’s my favorite version. Tim (bass) sounded so good. Just so you know Tim has a 5 octave range so he can sing super low and then sing up with the tenors. I think you’re hearing the vocal fry in his voice. Loved the beatboxing. Who would think the beatboxing would fit with this song but it does. Also Chance (far left) was doing bass this time. He’s the baritone/bass and can go low just not as low as Tim. Loved Austin and Rob too! Good reaction!!!😍😄 Merry Christmas to you and yours!

When Tim does not sing bass, quite often Adam Chance, the one with the beanie, will take over the bass part. He is an excellent bass in his own right. This version of "Mary did you know" is one of my favorites. It is not to even be compared with Pentatonix, because they do it so differently, it's like a different song.

There’s an acapella group named “Voctave” that also sings this, (and sings it extremely well!) They feature the actual author of the song, a singer/ comedian named Mark Lowry. The way he sings it, you know that the lyrics come from a place deep in an unshakable part of his very being, and that he believes every word to his core. You don’t have to be a Christian to recognize this and appreciate it. If you watch this version you will not be disappointed. You know I’ve never given you a bad recommendation. Trust me on this one too.

Maybe it’s time to get more exposure to Chance’s vocal prowess. I suggest “I Can’t Outrun You”- 5 part harmony, it’s hauntingly beautiful, and Chance directed the video. He sings it on his lower register, which is warm and velvety. “Cover Me Up”, another Chance project, with very emotive delivery. “Helplessly Hoping “- yet another Chance project, 5 part harmony, and Chance leads it off. Tim and Chance hit us with the double bass in at least 2 sections of the song. Then there is a shared lead with Tim “Brothers in Arms “- again, 5 part harmony and it’s one of their masterpieces.

The really definitive one, though is "May Day." It always HUGELY surprises people who have only ever heard TIM sing bass with the group. It's really a MUST, because Chance REALLY gets to show off his range. It was posted on November 17, 2017, shortly after "I Can't Outrun You," which was posted on October 23, 2017. "Helplessly Hoping" came a few months later, on April 27, 2018. Another few months later, on November 19, 2018, Chance got another chance to really shine (baritone only), in "Some Girls Do." The young lady on the tailgate of the pickup with him is now his wife. 😀

My favourite rendition of the hymn by my favourite acapella band. The singing, harmonies & beatboxing are terrific and the crescendos . . . Your comment about not having known that this was a Christmas song made me wonder about its origin. So I did some searching, and it turns out there's a tie to David Phelps, whose version of "O Holy Night" you just reacted to. The connection is through the Gaither Vocal Band. From Wikipedia: "Mary, Did You Know?" is a Christmas song addressing Mary, mother of Jesus, with lyrics written by Mark Lowry in 1984, and music written by Buddy Greene in 1991. It was originally recorded by Christian recording artist Michael English on his self-titled debut solo album in 1991. At the time, English and Lowry were members of the Gaither Vocal Band, and Greene was touring with them.[1] The song reached Number 6 on CCM Magazine's Adult Contemporary Chart.[2] Lowry would record the song several times himself, most notably with the Gaither Vocal Band on their 1998 Christmas album, Still the Greatest Story Ever Told. The song has since gone on to become a modern Christmas classic, recorded by hundreds of artists over the years, across multiple genres.[1] Several recordings have reached the top ten in the Billboard R&B and Holiday charts. The song encourages contemplation of the relationship between Mary and her son, although some religious commentators have criticized the lyrics for downplaying Mary's own grace and understanding. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary,_Did_You_Know%3F

A few have mentioned in the comments that Chance was doing bass while Tim was singing lead and I thought so too at first because they often do it that way (espcially when singing live). But I listened to the Learning Tracks yesterday and Tim was doing the bass throughout the whole song, Chance was singing the baritone in the background. They obiously layered the voices.

For some reason, the little sound Adam makes at the end of "The blind will see...the deaf will hear...etc." has always reminded me of the sounds a little baby sometimes makes while nursing or dreaming or yawning. And it fits so well with a song about a small, contented, newborn child. Has anyone else made this connection or am I over-thinking it?

I am a huge Home Fry but when this song came out last year I found the sound to be weird-and I still do. TBH, I find it a bit distracting.😮 EDIT: sounds like a snort
@arnieadam9 ай бұрын
I think some of that bass comes from Adam Chance and some of it comes from Adam Rupp, the beatboxer. No matter how many times I hear this song, when they sing, "The great...I AM," I get chills every time. To my ear, PTX sound is more hard or clear and I can't often tell the different voices apart (some of them sound a lot alike to me), but with HF I find their sound is warmer and a bit softer and each voice is individual and you can pick them out, but they still blend together so beautifully without losing that individuality.
@scottrogers72429 ай бұрын
Rupp is a tenor, so no, I don't think he contributes to the bass line. That would be Chance, and only when Tim is singing lead.

Chance does the bass line in this song, when Tim is singing Chance takes bass. Chance is the singer in the back left. Home Free IMO does 5his song warmer then PTX, PTX has to many High tenors to me give it a colder sound. Great reaction
@Rkbmomma9 ай бұрын
Yeah, when PTX'S Mitch hits those higher notes they are grating on my ears but when Voctave's Kate hits those high whistle tones, I have no problem with it. Don't know why.🤷♀️ I cannot listen to some of PTX's songs because their high notes sound screachy/grating to me.
@GrandmasGotGraceLW9 ай бұрын
@@Rkbmomma I am totally in agreement with the PTX group as it stands these days. When Avi was there, I loved them. They basically fell apart, as far as I'm concerned, when he left, though for a little while (without the latest changes) they weren't too much different.
