Great reaction guys. One little thing though is that under her rule Kattegate did thrive and became a major trading station in the land. The only thing she never did was put defences around the city which lagertha took advantage of to take it back

So, about the Floki scene. He reacted the way he did because he was moved by how devout and fearless the worshipers were. Because when they entered the church, they scattered and screamed, but with the mosque, no one budged. He also was interested in how the Muslims prayed with such vigor even though there's no idols (the tradition in Islam partly comes from the 10 Commandments where it says to not have graven images of God). And, yes, while Christianity and Islam have the same place of origin and same god, the Vikings at the time probably didn't know that so they probably seen them as completely different. And for the historical context of the episode, this is (I think) the 700s to 900s roughly. So this is about 200 years after Islam began, by this point the Arabs conquered all of Spain into their empire. So not the Ottomans, the Ottomans were a Turkish Islamic empire that would come about 600 years later. At this point the Islamic empire went from Spain to about the edge of China, all of that being one single empire. So the people there in Spain would've been Arabs, Moors (a kind of part Arab and part African mix), Africans, and native Spaniards.

That ending is still one of my all time favorites! Their depiction of Odin was fantastic and I legit get chills every time I hear Ragnar's final words. He really was summoned home in the end.

That actually was Spain. Before modern times, a lot of Spain, Italy, and the Iberian peninsula was conquered by Moors and Islamic people until the Christian reconquered the area so that’s an accurate depiction of Spain for the time period. I don’t really agree with Bjorn sending Ragnar to his death. I mean in a way it could be seen as that but Bjorn believed he was destined to sail the Mediterranean. He planned to do that for at least ten years and Ragnar came back and asked him to change his plans. That’s not fair and Bjorn is a man now who is seeking his own fame. I think Ragnar understood that anyway though. I don’t think he seriously expected Bjorn to go.

This was Spain under the Moors: Al-Andalus. They ruled for 700 years. The Ottoman Empire never controlled Spain. They're lucky they went to a local trading post, they would've gotten wrecked in they went inland.

They raided Seville in 844 and were initially very sucessful. They defeated the Muslim forces and pillaged Seville and the surrounding areas in true Viking fashion: brutally. This raid actually struck such fear into the Muslims of Al-Andalus that they set up methods of long-term defence that proved to be very successful in future at preventing them from happening. They were finally defeated by Isa ibn Shuhayd but this was by no means easy, as the victory came after a series of very indecisive engagements. It's estimated that about 500 to 1000 Vikings were killed during this time, many of them hung and beheaded. The Muslim casualties are unknown but considering it took them nearly a month to defeat the Vikings, we can assume they suffered about the same if not more casualties as the Vikings did.

Actually was Spain in those years there was a muslim Calipahte mostly in the Southern Regions. The muslims where actually defeated in Europe for good by Charles Martel(The hammer) in France, and after that they were slowly pushed out until 15th century. The Spanish(actually the kingdoms of Castille and Aragon at the time) had started Reconquista(the reconquering) against the muslims at some point in history. That was actually the point of the dreaded Spanish Inquisition to expel all non christians from the land muslims and jews, you could have converted and stay there, leave but all your property would be seized or refuse and you will be tortured and killed.

The thing about Floki I think they tried to convey was that Vikings generally had a LOT more respect for Muslims than christians. Take the contrast of how the Christians reacted when the Vikings entered a church in the early seasons compared to the Muslims. The Vikings looked at the christians as weak cowards, were their religion was superior only when it was convenient. For all their talk about going to heaven and their god being the only one, even the highest ranking priests and bishops still begged for mercy from both them and their God instead of meeting God with dignity. The Muslims did not fear death because of their belief in God, just like many Vikings didn't fear death in battle because of their belief in Valhalla. Basically the Vikings looked at Christians as posers :P

When the Seer said that, the first son of Ragnar that came to my mind was Bjorn and I still think it will be him. But the whole "we are all sons of Ragnar" could be Hirst retconning the prophecy.
