There's a reason it took so long for them to get converted into the Christian cult, and even then they didn't persecute people who weren't followers of Christianity until like, the 1600's.

The viking series is really impressive. Really well made. One answer was wrong in this video though, (from a Swedish viking enthisiast, this is an opportunity to bring more info to people in a positive way I hope): all heathen men were obliged to defend to king, even slaves were trained in combat and some wore weapons in peace time. When the alarm sounded, the Ledung or mobilisation made all men free and slaves warriors. Each village had a duty to bring a ship and 20 men. The ship was supposed to be in such a good condition so only one man was needed to constantly drain the inleaking water out of it (that was how they mesured the quality of it, a wooden ship is alive, it needs care, and tar three times in the spring before being put into the water etc...). 99% of the men were farmers, but also warriors.
