People say this all the time in the comments, but I think it needs to be said again: The way you always discuss your thoughts before and after and episode is so great. We get to hear exactly what your predictions and interpretations are instead of just seeing your in-the-moment reaction. Both of you being extremely likeable helps as well, I guess :D Keep up the great reactions!

One the greatest strengths of Vikings has always been how it's characters are never purely good or purely evil. They are all perfectly imperfect. So, don't get your hopes up about anyone or try to understand their motivations. They all have their moments to be proud and they all have shameful moments. You will feel even for the most villainous as the years go by...

When they show the visions & strange prophecies, I look at it like that's what the characters are perceiving. Keeping in mind their beliefs & superstitions in that world, the things we see on the screen are a visual way of conveying the way they interpret odd, unusual, or the unexplainable . It also acts as a way to insert foreshadowing in a interesting & mysterious way by keeping it vague & up for interpretation. What a mouthfull, oh well, that's just how interpret much of it. It does always forward the story, character, or world, and that's good writing.

It's the feudal system. King Ecbert owns the land and leases it out to his Vassals who in turn manage it for him, back then squatters would have been ignored if they were paying their dues and taking care of the Kings land. As soon as a better use is found for it Ecbert legally can do whatever he wants with it.

Regards the land gift. Egbert probably removed the local lords (Thegn/Thane ) and local free peasant folk (Ceorls/Curls, Kotsetla and Geneatas), leaving the poorest lowest level of free folk (the Geburas) and Slaves as labourers to help Lagertha and the Norse settlers to farm. Maybe the land was partly vacant due to previous war, famine or other cause, before the vikings came the Anglo-Saxons would fight among themselves quite often, often when the was a new king.

You mean Christianity right?
@kristagemini
@kristagemini 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if that is a Catholic thing, but in Christianity, usually it's a chosen person. A miracle. A saint. A martyr. I've had long discussions with people about this subject of Catholicism vs. Christianity. If you go to the Bare Bones of it, yes, the definition of Christianity is anyone who follows Jesus Christ. So technically, Catholicism and Christianity would be the same but that is where similarities end. Practicing Protestant Christianity and Catholicism, are two very different things. Catholicism versus Protestant Christianity, although worshiping the same God, is done in very different ways. I think that the term Christianity is really just an umbrella term, there are many different religions that fall under Christianity, technically, but worship is very different. Personally, I've always had a separation between Catholicism and Christianity. Catholics have their own rituals, they pray to Mother Mary and the Saints and not just God or Jesus Christ. They have added books to the Catholic Bible that are not in other Christian Bibles, and they have taken away some. So to me they are truly different religions. Even if they do fit under the umbrella of Christianity simply because of the definition of Christianity. It's the same thing with many Christian practices oh, there are definitely branches that go off in two completely different forms of worship. Mormons could technically be called Christians. Even though what they believe is completely different from Protestant Christianity or Catholicism. Then you have Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopalian, Baptist, Southern Baptist, non denominational, Etc ... but again we have religions that are technically worshiping the same God but just in extremely different ways to where besides believing in Jesus Christ and in God there are no other similarities. They are not the same. As for myself, I've just gotten to the point where I really don't even believe in religion because I believe that religion itself is a man-made construct. However I do have faith, and I do have a spiritual life. I was raised Independent Baptist, but I've seen too much from churches to really believe that any church is a true representation of Jesus Christ. So, I pray to God I read my Bible and I have my own spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ. Religion is man-made and anything that is man-made can be corrupted. That's exactly what has happened with so many religions. They have been radicalized. Whether it's Catholicism, or Islam, or Protestant Christianity, they have all been corrupted. Religion and spirituality are two entirely separate things. You can be a spiritual person with your own beliefs yet not believe in organized religion.

I LOVE the conversation between Athelstan and Judith, with Ecbert and Lagertha there. Athelstan has been through a lot, but still loves both religions and cultures. It was just so interesting to have Athelstan put it in perspective. The weapon of the trickster cleaves Lagertha... I wonder, will she be killed or does that mean.... and who is the trickster? Floki? Ecbert? Caulf? That's what is good about this show, a lot is up for interpretation, there is symbolism, there are religious visions of both sides, and things just get... confusing... but it's such a fun ride. Good reaction.

Interview with Michael Hirst regarding the fucking awesome scene, with the severed heads on the ship: “It’s a very powerful scene. I think it was Travis' idea. The reason the Vikings had this reputation for terrible cruelty and uber-violence is that they had limited manpower. They traveled maybe three ships at a time, with twenty-five or thirty warriors. That’s the limit. There are no reinforcements. They don’t know who they’re going to meet. They might be encountering hundreds of enemy warriors." So how does a small fighting force fight back against a huge army? “Shock and awe,” explains Hirst. “When you see Ragnar, traveling in a boat, with the heads of all these Mercians strung out on the ship: That is shock and awe. In the show, the Mercians run away-and that’s actually what happened! The Vikings had such a reputation, and that was part of their myth.”

At 19:03. This Viking is wise. He didn't understand the biology and epidemiology of gangrene. But he could tell that his really painful arm was eventually going to kill him. So may as well cut it off before the gangrene reached the rest of his body. Problem there--the bloody stump could also get infected, which would mean gangrene could come back again. And this is why I am so grateful to live in the modern age of germ theory, disinfectant and antibiotics. :D

the land Ecbert gave the Vikings belonged to some Wessex noble men..the farmers who actually lived there were just rightless peasants working for respectively literally belonging to those noblemen (= early feudal-system) ..So therefore the onlyones who might be pissed off because the Vikings got the land were those noblemen who now lost that particular land because of Ecbert´s call...and the paganism of the vikings is also definitively an issue for those as well..that´s why Ecbert simply has to promise protection (We will see if he ment that seriously) .....and about the prophecy of Lagertha and the Trickster..Well in fact there are now 2 Tricksters on the scene Ecbert and Kalf..that´s the thing about prophecies they are never clear but vague and they always could be interpreted in several different ways respectively only the outcome of certain situations make prophecies than legit or not but just afterwards..

At 11:54. Well, yes. You just literally explained feudalism. That's why there were revolutions to get rid of feudalism. It was fucked up. The less powerful always had to make way for the most powerful in the worst ways possible. Peasants had to give up their lands whenever their kings and lords told them to give them up. And they had to obey on pain of death.

No mystery as to Athelstan's allure to the ladies IMO. In my experience, people are always fascinated with what (or who) they're not supposed to have. The only question is: will they act upon it? JAMES

That, and he's rather nice looking, and isn't a strutting prick like most of the men around there. A lot of women like the quiet ones.

Scene with Lagertha and Athelstan was not a dream, Athelstan got the stigmata. Also, that guy showing up with Helga was obviously not a dream. The three women obviously had a dream premonition of his arrival.

Just want to throw some thought out there for why Raganr and King Egbert may get along and be so alike. I understand why Ragnar is so confused which Gods to follow. Its interesting how Ragnar when listening to King Horik "to let the GODS lead them" and that their "destiny is predetermined by their Gods" Ragnar followed King Horik in that battle with King Egbert and they failed, nearly lost Rolo...Yet when Ragnar prayed with Athelstan to Jesus Christ on the upcoming invasion by King Horik, he was victorious. No question Ragnar is torn between which Gods to follow since he looks back and remembers how they destroyed churches and priests, probably feels guilt... likely questions a lot now. King Egbert is in the same boat. He showed Athelstan the Roman graphics on the walls that were done 100's years earlier and they were Pagans allowed to rule the world so King Egbert likley (like Ragnar) questions if Jesus Christ is really the God, or any God at all. Love the show
