This was the viking's first time doing a siege on such a "modern" fortress. They had no experience with this stuff. They are more used to raiding softer targets and open combat. Meanwhile, the franks and most other european nations have always done war this way, so they are far more used and a lot of traps, techniques and formations for this type of situation. It was expected for them to lose here.

Raiding a village or monastery is nothing compared to sieging a whole ass fortress. In terms of open field combat and naval combat, Vikings are monsters; but attacking a fortress requires more than just fervent determination and no fear of death.

Had the vikings breached the city the population would had been slaughtered along with the men at arms and crossbow men, and nobles, metal smith's be carried off to be use ro forge weapons and armor for the vikings, rhe few hundred Frank's that survive be sold into slavery. The Frank's however won because their troops. Are better armed as their armor and weapons were the best at the time. Paris city os very fortified and its walls stand tall giving the crossbow men higher ranger, and the men at arms can fight the vikings a few at a time, while the viking warriors are limited to how many can scale the walls. And the french had greater troop strength and could easily move their solider where they need them. And they had impressive siege weapons and weapon traps the vikings did not see coming like the boiling oil and water. The french also formed the vikings to fight at range as the crossbow men killed many viking warriors. The french had fewer losses in men then the vikings on account of the city walls which worked against the vikings numbers. And while the french were somewhat Demoralize from fear of the tales of what the vikings the french thanks in part to the king King of France daughter the princess bring up the french banner had help restore moral and gave the french the army the moral and courage they needed to.beat back the viking. And the victory. Proved to thr french that while the vikings were a terror. They were not Unstoppable.

The thing I disliked about the show is that the vikings never experienced a loss... not ever. They kept destroying countless Saxons and other European factions. Which is so so stupid. They make everyone look like shit

@@koreancowboy42 That is not quite right. They did experience quite a few losses. They lost to France in their first raid, they got tricked by the King Ecbert and their entire settlement was wiped out. They had a series of victories over the saxons at the start because they bumrushed them. The saxons didn't know them or how they fought. The vikings didn't respect any of the conveniences that the surrounding kingdoms did. That is pretty historically accurate. When the vikings first showed up, they wreaked havoc on the unsuspecting european kingdoms who had never faced them before. The show starts at this period, so it makes sense that at the start we don't see them losing much. But it steadily begins to happen as the seasons build on.

Ragnar hit the wall, the stair that Floki build, and hit the ground with his dead people on top of it when he fell from the top of the wall. he might not look injured from outside, but inside... his badly injured.

I think the princess's speech was to boost morale. Just like how the Vikings have faith in their gods, the Franks had faith in Jesus Christ so they probably felt invigorated by her presence. It's like in Game of Thrones how even if the royals didn't fight (Jofrrey at Blackwater and Sansa during the Long Night), their presence was supposed to be a comfort to the people fighting to remind the men what they're fighting for. Also Paris is a fortified city at this point unlike the villages that the Vikings raided in England. Even if you don't find their ruler threatening, it's still more advanced than what we saw in England.

Yes it gave the french men at arms, crossbow and longbow men, and knights the morale boost they needed. Added the trench troops for very viking warriors they killed they saw the viking were not Unstoppable despite their fierce reputation. And.the french army had been reminded they are soldiers of God and seeing one of their leaders clearly inspired the soldiers to fight ro the bitter end. Plus the walls of the city of Paris forced the viking army to fight at limit strength as many were open to being shot by crossbow men.

Bear in mind that although the writer uses a lot of artistic licence, many of the events are based in historical fact, so characters cannot be killed off at will. Rollo, for example, would become the first ruler of Normandy (the region that the French king gave to the Vikings to stop them attacking the rest of France, and also to provide his country with some protection from the north).

There is a reason castles have walls and battlements. There are instances in history of 5 people in a castle repelling a siege of over 300 soldiers. Having a castle makes repelling an enemy attack MUCH easier.
