I learned about the Vikings last semester in college and one thing I always thought was that they where nothing but savages. Now I think they are much better then some medieval cultures and tribes or states.

@The Grin Reaper Yeah, I have seen a couple encounters with my professors and students he rudely insult the professor and the class for learning about Medieval history of Europe I for one enjoyed it so I became a history Major.

@The Grin Reaper - The Saxons and other Europeans who were the victims of Vikings characterized the Vikings as barbarians. That characterization stuck for centuries. It is actually modern scholarship that has provided different stances on Vikings, based upon knowledge of their lifestyles and cultures. I suggest that you drop your bias and base your stances on facts, as well.

Actually, the food theory might be wrong. Not only is the land plenty and fertile and vikings dugged up or near towns has shown plenty of food and diffrent animal bones or grains, even a trader who visited vikings one time said: there is so much fish in the village here, that they cant even sell it to each other - not to mention all the game to hunt. most likely was traders who saw weaknesses in towns - went home told people about it, and some of the "not farmers" decided to take a gamble, as in greed.
@ThenukSirimanna10 ай бұрын
Great video👌.. If you follow the name Reginherus instead of Ragnar Lothbrok, I swear you'll find his existence. The show Vikings kinda messed up the real history. But a lot of Frankish Sources mention him quite a few times as the cunning leader of the Northmen. His attack on Paris on Easter Sunday is mentioned even with dates. I think it was March 29th 841AD. And yes there's so many legends about him too sometimes conflicting with real history. You can thank the Medieval European literature for that.

“most Vikings uses axes because swords were very expensive” This is misleading and not correct. Cars are expensive but most households have access to one because they last for years and companies keep making them so you can buy a used one for a reasonable price. What would be more accurate is that Vikings mostly used spears and bows. And that some also used axes swords and knives.
@user-rp7sr9xt5b4 жыл бұрын
Why are you comparing modern things like cars to swords from a thousand years ago? Times were different man
@robertbaragar64804 жыл бұрын
KeisukeMito I’m showing that just because something is expensive to construct, it doesn’t have to stay expensive forever, especially if it is durable enough to last many years. Sorry if I went over your head with that comparison.
@motordude674 жыл бұрын
I think you have a point. Everybody say they are so expensive and rarely used by vikings. Here in Norway alone, 3500 swords has been found. Considering that the population in the the years between 793 to 1066 was between 80-100k, that is a huge amount of swords.
@keirfarnum68114 жыл бұрын
Robert Baragar According to Ibn Fadhlan, the Rus vikings who came to Constantinople all carried an axe, dagger, and sword. And a ship found in Estonia (I think) contained more swords than the bodies buried with the ship. It’s likely that since enemy swords were heated, bent, and thrown into rivers and lakes, there just weren’t that many recovered; leading to the idea that swords were rare. But it seems they were quite common in fact.
@shadowhammond86034 жыл бұрын
All Vikings carried an Ax. Some more wealthy Vikings carried swords. They didn't sell them like a used car...they passed them down to the next generation.
@col45744 жыл бұрын
According to one source about 150,000,if you can count all the Estonians in that time as Vikings.Estonia was not a country at that time of course,and there are no known censuses then.The estimate is based on populaton dynamics and known archaeology.Look up Jomsborg vikings.

Well if you are gonna lead a succesfull trade journey or raid. Then you also need people that cook, collect firewood, clean and that kinda stuff. Whilst the men do other things like patrol, scout and prepare for any attacks. I mean every military force back in the day had a caravan which was tended by women and children. And men of course. Good material. But you got some things WRONG: 1) A lot of Norse chiefs & kings were NOT burned with their ships. They were buried with them. 2) Beserkers were said to drink or eat hallucinogenic drugs (mushrooms). It has never been proven. Also, it is unproven that they turned against their own 3) Ragnar Lothbrok is a fictional character. 4) Learn how to pronounce the names properly!
@bobmalibaliyahmarley15512 жыл бұрын
You are wrong about one thing though. Ragnar Lodbrok is definately NOT a fictional character in itself, but parts of his saga is definately fiction. And some of his achivements or story is not know if it was actually one person, or if his story is the tales of the deeds of several different people who's stories have just been woven into Ragnar's story over time. Like, there is this person know as something along the lines of ''Raginhari'' in norse sagas, which historians have believed to be another name for Ragnar, but there is no direct source that claims it. But Ragnar Lodbrok in itself was DEFINATELY a real person, but it is uncertain if his story as a whole is actually the story of one man, or several people who's stories have just been woven into his story to create a more legendary tale over time.

@RuerlKhan4 жыл бұрын
There are several archeological graves of women from the viking period being buried with weapons however... And keep in mind that a grave depicts not how the dead imagined themselves but how their surroundings saw the dead. - So there were indeed Scandinavian warrior women, though wether they were vikings or not (given that this is a profession akin to "pirate") is something we do not know.
@Hammerhook124 жыл бұрын
@@RuerlKhan This is simply an exaggerated revision of history propped up feminists. There's more evidence to the contrary i.e mass graves of warriors and written records that only men fought. However, relative to that time period the women had more power in what still would be defined as a very patriarchal world by modern standards.
@RuerlKhan4 жыл бұрын
@@Hammerhook12 As I wrote: We have archeological evidence of graves were women were buried with weapons, even one or two examples of the bones having injuries from weapons. That is all I can make as a statement, I cannot speak to it being common (it was obviously a very rare thing) but it did happen that women fought. As for your claim that we have written records that "only men fought" this is not true - at least we have no contemporary written records from the time, this is mostly due to the lack of written accounts by the vikings however. What some feminists seem to believe is that it was a common thing for viking women to be warriors - that is something any historian or archeologist would dispute if they took their education at all seriously. The only thing we can be certain of is that there were a few rare examples - these are not the norm, but the exception. Making the claim that there were no female fighters in scandinavia during the viking period however, is almost as silly as making the claim that they were common.
