The NFL said after the game that the Gabe Davis catch at 18 seconds left in the 4th quarter should have been an automatic booth review, and that had it been reviewed it would have been deemed "not a catch". The NFL also added that Buffalo had 12 men on the field on a crucial goal line play earlier in the game (which would have been a penalty had the officials noted it). Not a good day for the officials.

Hello there fellow Minnesota pal. Some people are saying it's even better. I think I might agree, only because it's so fitting that they were doing it IN Diggs' new house. Plus the entire game was wild, not just one play at the end of the Miracle. Also, so here's my story about the Minneapolis Miracle: Me and 2 of my buddies were house sitting for a fairly wealthy friend of ours who had a hot-tub outside but with effectively a garden shed around it so it wasn't cold in that room once you take the top off the tub. So we were enjoying the hot-tub on a snowy winter night drinkin' beers, and the only thing out there for music was a shitty old RCA radio that had been in the cold for X# of years, and we're only very, very casual football fans so we wanted to listen to tunes, but the only thing that would come in was KFAN so we listened to PA's broadcast, and I remember we were all drunk and dejected because we knew we were gonna lose, and I was having flashbacks to 2009 or whatever, losing to the damned Saints again, and then it happened. Plus, PA's broadcast was absolutely outrageous (as most of them are) so we're like ripping beers open, slinging it around, running around in the snow shotgunning beers in January in Minnesota having the time of our lives. So then we ran inside and turned on the news or ESPN or whatever the hell so we could see the play. We had only heard PA's broadcast! And mind you, we're hammered, totally soaked our buddy's house running through it with snowy feet plus after being in a hot tub, so we're just watching it over and over on different channels talking about how "If more Vikings games were like this I'd actually watch." And look at me now, they have another absolute barn burner and I'm super hyped lol.

Touchdown 1st in overtime means game over. Field goal means the other team gets a shot to tie or win with a TD. Game ended on interception in overtime cause that was their one drive attempt to tie or win. Turnover to the Vikings = loss. Hope this isn't too confusing! Lol

They had 12 men on the field during the 1st and goal in overtime not on the QB sneak. They did have 2 guys lined up in the neutral zone on the QB sneak though which should’ve given the Vikings another shot at a TD in regulation.

Overtime rules: 1 ten minute overtime. A touchdown wins the game as does a safety. If the team that receives the initial kick either doesn't score or scores a field goal then the other team gets a possession. If the score is tied after each team has had a possession then the next score, of any type, wins the game. If the game is still tied after the ten minutes is up it ends in a tie. Postseason overtime rules are different in that they can have additional overtimes until there is a winner.

Well, I have to subject myself to this... but yes, it's modified sudden death. If the first drive results in a field goal, the other team gets a chance to answer back. If it results in a touchdown the game is over, to give teams an incentive to not just kick a field goal as soon as they can. If the first drive results in a safety assessed on the offensive team (I may have used more words than I needed there, for clarity), then because the other team is the one that scored, they don't need the ball back. As opposed to high school and college: no clock, one time out per period to avoid the play clock running out. 25 yard line, you keep the ball until you score or turn the ball over. Then the other team has the chance to match or get more points, unless there's a defensive score. Rinse and repeat until there's a winner.

If the first team to have a possession scores a TD, they win and the other team never gets the ball. If each team has had the ball once, then the first score of any kind wins the game. So if Minn had scored a TD rather than a field goal on first possession, would have been game over.

No, they changed the overtime rules Daz. Now, its the first Touchdown that wins in OT but if you kick a field goal then the other team gets a possession to as well. Once the Vikings got the ball back the game ended. They don't have to play the rest of the quarter like in soccer extra time.

Also, after the interception in overtime the game was over right there. There was no kneeling the ball after the interception. The Bills had one chance to score, and didn’t so the game ended.

Basically, had the Vikings scored a TD on that first possession of OT, they would’ve won the game. But since they were held to a field goal, the Bills got another possession for a chance to either win the game with a TD themselves, or tie with a field goal. Had they tied with a field goal, next team to score (TD/FG/Safety), wins the game. These same rules used to apply to both regular/playoff games, until this year. The NFL added a new rule for the post season. If a playoff game reaches OT, scoring a TD first doesn’t automatically win you the game. The opposing team will now get another possession to possibly tie the game with a TD. If that were to happen, next point wins the game. That was a new rule added in result to last years playoff game between the Bills & Chiefs! That game was just as crazy if not crazier than this one! all plays are reviewed when under the 2minute mark, the NFL admitted they flubbed not reviewing that dropped pass. in OT the first TD ends that game, but a field goal allows the other team to have a possession to try and tie with their own FG or TD to win. the old OT rules used to be sudden death even a FG ends the game, but no longer now.

Thing about OT there... So the Vikings got a field goal and 3 points, so the Bills got a possession, and they needed a TD to win or a FG to stay tied. But when the Vikings intercepted, the Bills' possession ended, and the game ended immediately with the Vikings victorious. It used to be that whoever scored first in overtime won. The NFL changed the OT rules about a decade ago, and I know this stuff by heart because 1. I'm a nerd and 2. my team was the first to lose in overtime under the new rules!

OT - first touchdown wins. Minnesota only got a field goal after winning the coin toss, so Buffalo had a possession to try to win or tie. Game ended on the INT, notwithstanding time on the clock. The clock only comes into play in an OT period if that period ends in a tie. This rule was implemented to try to curtail multiple OT periods.

Here are the OT rules: Regular season games: No more than one 10-minute period will follow a three-minute intermission. Each team must possess, or have the opportunity to possess, the ball. The exception: if the team that gets the ball first scores a touchdown on the opening possession. Sudden death play - where the game ends on any score (safety, field goal or touchdown) - continues until a winner is determined. If the score is still tied at the end of the overtime period, the result of the game will be recorded as a tie. --- Postseason games: If the score is still tied at the end of an overtime period - or if the second team’s initial possession has not ended - the teams will play another overtime period. I’m sure it’s been explained but the overtime rules (thankfully the OT rules were changed as for years if you won the coin toss you’d just have to get into FG range to win on that initial FG in OT) are if the Vikings had scored a TD, it’s over. A FG gives the Bills a chance to come down and tie it or if they score a TD it’s over. And if the Vikings hadn’t scored at all, the bills could have won it with a FG. The time isn’t irrelevant but kinda if there’s a score and of course you need to do that in that time.

When the Vikings intercepted Allen's last pass, the game ended as soon as the player went down. There was no need to run the clock out. Both teams had a possession, so when the Bills turned the ball over, the game was over. There was no need to run out the clock because the overtime period is sudden death once all the possession requirements have been met and one team has the lead.

Others have explained the current Overtime rules pretty well. It used to be first to score won no matter what but they changed it because kickers got so good at kicking long field goals that whoever won the coin toss barely had to move the ball to kick a game winning kick. So you’d have Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, etc standing on the sideline if their team lost the coin toss as the other team kicked a 62 yard field goal without a chance to respond.

Yeah, in American football there are 2 clocks - the game clock & the play clock. The game clock keeps time for the quarter of the game, while the play clock is all about just getting a play started. If a team doesn't start a play in 40 seconds, they're charged a penalty for delay of game. So, even though there's 1.12 left on the game clock, the Vikings were allowed to run the play clock down to about 1 second, & then kill that clock by, 'taking a knee'.

9:40 I didn't see this live, but in those situations it's not unusual for the receiver to communicate to his team that he did not catch it, so they can get the next play off quickly. As soon as the next play starts nothing can be done. With under 2 minutes left in the half the coaches could not challenge, it would have come from officials.

The reason they won wasn’t because a minute was left in OT, it was because if you only score a FG in OT the other team gets one chance to match you and score a FG or TD. If they don’t score anything then the game is over. First team to score a TD in OT wins.

Since many others have commented, and made things more confusing for you guys...I'll try to simplify things. Basically, in OT both teams get a chance at possessing the ball unless, the team that got the ball first scores a TD, or the team that didn't get the ball gets a safety or TD. After each team has had the ball once, "Sudden Death" begins...next score wins. If no one scores in the 10 min period...it's a tie. In the playoffs, they play until someone scores.

Overtime is kind of confusing. It's modified sudden death. The way it works is the first team to score a touchdown wins. If the team that possesses the ball first scores a field goal the other team gets a chance to score points. If the other team gets a field goal OT continues, if they score a touchdown they win, if they don't score they lose. So on that last possession the Bills had to score at least a field goal or they lose.

NFL's overtime rules are a bit weird. It used to be straight-up "golden goal," first-score-wins, as it were, but it was felt to be unfair that a team could lose without getting the chance to possess the ball. On the other hand, people argued that if your defense can't stop the other team from scoring, they don't deserve to win. So they implemented this weird, split-the-baby-in-half OT rule where it's "both teams get a chance to possess the ball, unless the first score is a touchdown."

Minnesota didn’t have to take a knee at the end and run out the OT clock. In OT Bills only had 1 drive to win with TD or tie with FG to keep playing, but the game ended with the pick bc both sides got their offensive possessions

FYI office blokes Most gently when season starts there's 1game on Thursday night,the rest are on Sunday and 1 on Sunday night and 1 on Monday night Thanksgiving there are 3 games 1 early afternoon 1late afternoon and at night,then towards the end of the season there's a couple of Saturday games.

The new overtime rules are first TOUCHDOWN wins. If the first team to get the ball scores a field goal or less, the other team gets the chance to kick a field goal to tie or a TD to win. Once Buffalo turned the ball over after Minnesota scored 3 in overtime, the game was over, regardless of what was on the clock. It USED to be that first points scored in overtime won the game outright, but then media darling Josh Allen (Bills QB) lost a playoff game to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in which the Bills let the Chiefs tie the game with 13 seconds and the Chiefs won the toss and scored a field goal in overtime without Josh getting to touch the ball in OT. Well...he touched the ball in OT here... And gave the game away.

OT rules from a guy who got into the NFL the last two years. Team A gets a chance... if they score a TD it's over...if they don't and take 3 then team B gets the chance to do the same. Score a TD it's over...or get 3 and tie the game and keep the pattern going first to score a TD or capitalize on a enemy teams field goal miss wins

On the catch you're talking about at 9:40, within the final 2 minutes of play of either half and for all of overtime, the teams can't challenge plays, it's entirely up to the refs to decide to review them.

Both teams get a chance in overtime unless the first team scores a touchdown, then it's over. Because it was just a field goal the other team gets a chance to tie or win the game. The overtime only goes as long as it takes to score. If both teams have 3 points from field goals at the end of allowed time it ends in a tie!

A TD in Overtime in the NFL is basically like golden goal but if you just get a FG the other team gets a chance

NFL overtime rules are kind of weird. If you score a touchdown the game ends. But if you score a field goal the rival team gets a shot at scoring themselves. the game ended because the Vikes scored a field goal then the Bills had a chance to score but failed to do so. Daz, you might be remembering the old OT rule of sudden death where the first team to score won but they did away with it because the team that won the toss won the game nearly 70% of the time.

There are multiple crazy endings in the NFL every week, not this crazy maybe, but there's a ton of games that come down to the last two minutes. And the worst team could beat the best team any given Sunday. It's what makes the NFL such an amazing sport to watch. It would be like if the Premier League Had multiple matches won in extra time.

With the "VAR" you can only review the last play. Once the next play is run, you can't go back. The Bills got up to the line quickly and ran another play, taking any review out of play. Likely the receiver knew he didn't catch it and signaled his team to run the next play asap....every team has a protocol for that type of situation. In regular time the coach has a flag he can throw to challenge the call twice a game but this happened in over time when all reviews come from the officials. This was a massive miss.

So, the Overtime rules are stupid, but basically: If there's an offensive or defensive touchdown, that team wins automatically. Field goals scored allow the other team a possession to either tie or win the game. That clock doesn't matter unless nobody scores.

Not quite. Both teams can kick a field goal, so the clock can still matter even if both teams scored. Also, you can win with a field goal as long as both teams have had possession of the ball in overtime already.

NFL overtime rules are weird. If the team that gets the ball first scores a FG on that drive, the other team gets one chance to answer (up to the limit of 10 minutes). After both teams have had the ball, if the score is not tied, the game is over; if it is tied, next score wins. In the playoffs, there's no time limit (although teams switch ends after 15 minutes, if a game goes that long), and starting this year, the second team will get a chance to answer even if the first team scores a touchdown, but it still goes to "next score wins" after both teams have had the ball once.

In over time the first team gets a chance for a Touchdown which will end the game, if they don't get a touchdown, the other team has a chance for a touchdown. In this case the Vikings got a fieldgoal for 3 pts. That means that Buffalo has a chance with the ball but since they threw an interception, possession of the ball changes and ends the game automatically.

In Overtime . Both teams get a chance with the ball. Unless the team that has it first scores a touchdown. Then that team wins. If both teams get a chance with the ball with no touchdowns, then the next score wins. A field goal for example
